Rocky + Movement Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller
yeah, you're right, that would be kind of a ridiculous thing to expect of an engineer, wouldn't i— oh nvm.
and the way grace overcomes his cowardice is so good because it still doesn’t come easily to him.
he sits and bawls thinking about the choice he has to make to go home or save rocky. i’ve seen people refer to this as him crying for rocky specifically, and in part, yeah, but he’s crying because he wants to survive and go home to statues and parades and to yell at stratt, and now that's not a simple choice. he is wrestling with the temptation to do it anyway and leave rocky, but he keeps involuntarily thinking about his friend and his ‘dumb carapace' and the whole planet of eridians who need him and it's dawning on him that he is going to choose to die.
when grace sees the blip-A again there's a moment after he celebrates where he suddenly feels heavy because he realizes if he hadn't been able to locate rocky, he would have gone home and survived after all. and he thinks, wow, i can't believe i tried so hard to find him.
this is him overcoming the weakest part of himself to make a choice he wouldn’t make before. a choice he’s not even being asked to make this time! and he made the brave choice while sobbing, wishing he could save himself too. it's a compelling contrast to a lot of stoic, noble, dignified depictions of self-sacrifice in fiction. it’s so good
queerplatonic grocky moodboard for those who celebrate
a selection of book-exclusive project hail mary scenes that were excluded from the movie to slight me in particular i’m pretty sure
obligatory grace almost kills rocky scene. they make me ill
NO he doesn’t look anything like rgos but he does have kind eyes. is that not enough?
plus full canvas for those who celebrate ->
hug
I love the idea of Rocky building the xenonite suit a few months after they get to Erid and going up to visit Grace in orbit as a surprise and he goes through this awful perpetually guilty scary triggering learning curve of figuring out how much strength he can safely use on which parts of the ship and Grace, and he's constantly apologising and hovering when he accidentally presses too hard, and all through this Grace (touch-starved, delirious, suffering zoochosis, dangerously understimulated), is trying to find a way to ask if Rocky can break a few of his bones without being put on alien suicide watch.
Do you guys think there was a bit where the Taumoeba leaked from the ship and Rocky just quietly accepted that he was going to die like the rest of his crew. Grace had helped him gain closure that he couldn’t have stopped the radiation sickness, but the breeder tank design was all Rocky’s doing. Erid and Earth and Grace—Rocky’s entire world—were going to die because he overlooked yet another detail. No one would know it was Rocky’s fault either—there would be nobody left to speculate who let the universe down.
Erid’s best engineer who killed himself with his own ignorance and brought the stars down with him. The damage, complete and thorough in it’s cosmic destruction, was done.
But then Ryland Grace shows up at blip-A’s door and says they’re going home, that it’s his turn to fix.
grace: i dont care what happens to me as long as you get to go home
rocky: nah if grace dies, rocky take himself out 0.01 seconds later and if erid doesn't agree to take care of grace then rocky will simply crash the hail mary into the planet
"The last time any human touched Ryland Grace was an act of horrific violence"
Well... Yes and no.
The last time Ryland Grace was CONSCIOUS of any human touch was when he was knocked out. Absolutely true.
But the last human contact he would have had was Yao and Ilyukhina. Who were told that he was scared about panicking during launch and asked to be sedated. Who did all the pre flight checks before the Hail Mary launched. Who would have carefully, gently carried Grace to his bed in the dormitory, made sure he was secure, and initiated his coma procedure.
There would have been love there. Remember Ilyukhina throwing her hands high and saying "welcome to crew!" Remember Yao saying how he hoped Grace would say yes. Remember how much the crew trusted Grace, Stratt's First Officer, the guy who helped them so much, and was so kind to them, and was the one who they entrusted their preferred methods of suicide to. Who thought they were wonderful and brave.
They would have tucked him in. Maybe brushed his hair out of his face. Maybe said something kind to him before initiating their own coma procedures.
Ryland Grace doesn't remember, of course he wouldn't. But the last human touch he ever had was full of love.
soundwaves, lightwaves (probably a wip, might add something to this but for now it looks like this)
I imagine rocky puts grace's amnesia problems down as a "probably normal for humans, they forget stuff all the time" thing for a while and it doesn't set in until maybe a year into the erid trip that, no, losing straight up All of your memories for several months is just about as concerning and unusual for a human as it would be for an eridian. and his immediate reaction is twofold: 1. "you. you were that brain-unhealthy for the entire time we were working together and you just. barely ever mentioned it? Why. Question." 2. [sudden recollection of every time he got short of temper and said something bitchy like "lazy human not know how own ship function" or "how grace forget location of basic controls question"] [curls up on the floor in embarrassment] "should have said something so I not spend two months making fun of brain injuryyy"
If you want to blog about phm you should be required to make at least 5 Rocky posts a day. You can’t be a phm blogger and just post about Grace. Drop and give me 15 things you love about Rocky and they MUST be genuine. I can tell.
That’s what I’m fucking talking about.
i think the first time grace loses a tooth from scurvy, once they get past the initial panic (“no, i won’t die from losing one tooth” and “yeah, it hurts, but it’s not that bad” and “i can still eat just fine, i promise”), rocky tentatively asks if he can hear it more closely.
“yeah, sure.” grace holds up the tooth to the xenonite barrier.
“no, closer,” rocky says, claws clicking nervously. “want to hold.”
grace considers that. if rocky were to, say, lose a chunk of carapace, he’d ask to have it without a second thought. he’d probably make an excuse about wanting to point a spectrometer at it or test its properties, and he’d obviously do those things, but he’d mainly just want to touch it. to hold a piece of rocky without fear of either of them being harmed.
he drops the tooth into the exchange drawer and rocky lunges to retrieve it. grace has a thousand self-hating, existential thoughts about losing it — his health is declining so quickly, his smile is changed forever, he can guess which tooth he’ll lose next — but they all quiet as he watches rocky pick it up with trembling claws. rocky cradles the tooth in the palm of his hand like a delicate treasure, warbling a wordless tune of delight, and grace thinks that, if he makes it through this, everything might just be okay.

EMBRACE PROFOUND PLATONIC DEVOTION
humiliating to be attracted to a conventionally attractive person. I thought I was a more sensitive and refined pervert than this
Glad to know we’re all on the same page
