cleanse your jar however you'd like - i use plain ol' soap and water, wipe down the inside with moon water, and then dry completely (moisture + dried herbs = mold)
add salt and cayenne to the jar, first, to act as a foundation for the spell
then add the rest of the ingredients to the jar while focusing on your intent
seal with wax, a ribbon, or however you'd like
place somewhere visible in your home - mine stays atop my altar :)

Ginger is a root found in a number of cooking applications, but it also has some practical magical uses because it's associated with money and abundance. Use ginger root blended with oil to bring money your way. For your base, use an unscented oil like jojoba, grapeseed, or safflower.
Grate the ginger finally and add it to the base oil. As you blend it, say “Money and abundance come my way, fill my purse with coins. Money and abundance for every day, fill my purse with coin.”
Dip your finger in the oil and trace dollar signs on the outside of your wallet, purse, or Piggy Bank.

literally just a rock. it can be a protective crystal if you want, but also if you pick up a rock from outside it can be a ward.
black salt (or any salt, if you wish) on windowsills. i also have black salt in jars in the 4 corners of my room.
sticks. dude trees are SO cool and protective, just don’t cut off a branch (unless you’ve been given permission, but i doubt a tree would like one of their limbs being cut off when you can easily find naturally dropped ones on the ground).
sigils! sigils are so versatile, make your own or find some online, draw it on a paper, and put it in your room. i have some thumbtacked to my wall as well as on my altar.
thread or ribbons around doorknobs. tbh, im not sure where this one comes from (maybe witch bells? which are also an idea) but you can tie black (or any color, but black is good for protection) ribbon around your doorknobs as a form of protection.
i’ll probably add a second post if i think of more. hope these can help you come up with your own ideas, too!! happy witching!
1. Take dried stinging nettle and burn it with the name of your enemy. It'll cause a lovely string in one way or another.
2. Filling a poppet of your enemy with stinging nettle it cause issues on the inside.
3. Making stinging nettle tea and putting the name of your enemy in it.
4. Writing your enemies names on paper and burying them under a stinging nettle plant so they'll never truly get any relief from the sting that they so rightly deserve.
"Blessed be" - do you actually know where it came from?
"Blessed be" has become quite the catch phrase in 21st century spiritual circles, especially among the modern witch communities. It's practically become the witches' version of "I will pray for you", and quite frankly, it's become more and more annoying for many of us to see it and hear it all the time, everywhere.
The phrase originates from a Wiccan ritual, which is included in some Gardnerian initiation ceremonies. During the rite, the High Priest or High Priestess performs on a person what is known as the "Five Fold Kiss", and recites the following words:
Blessed be thy feet, which have brought thee in these ways,
Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar,
Blessed be thy womb, without which we would not be,
Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty,
Blessed be thy lips, that shall utter the Sacred Names of the gods.
Before Gerald Gardner incorporated the phrase into his Book of Shadows, "blessed be" has already appeared in other religious texts such as the King James Bible ("blessed be the name of the Lord"), which, I would not be surprised, if it were the inspiration for the phrase "blessed be the fruit" in The Handmaid's Tale.
So, as you can see, for the witches who aren't Wiccan, and for the witches who aren't religious at all, this can be an obnoxious thing that gets thrown at all of us constantly.
I maintain my position that "blessing" people as well as praying for people without their consents and/or against their wishes is an invasive thing to do to begin with.
There are many appropriate phrases to express well wishing that can be used as a greeting or form of regards. Stop saying "blessed be" to everyone. Please.

This recipe is great with whatever berries are in season near you. I like to use the honey instead of sugar to represent the fruits of our labor as well as the honey the bees make after pollinated the food. Its a very sun representative food to me as well.
Ingredients -
4 cups plus 1 TBLS divided
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup steel-cut oats
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ground nutmeg
1/3 cup half and half ( or cream or dairy substitute)
¼ cup of brown sugar or molasses
1 cup fresh strawberries hulled and quartered
6 oz fresh blueberries
6 oz fresh blackberries
3 tsp granulated sugar or honey
Steps
Boil the water with a pinch of salt, then sprinkle in the oats and cinnamon and nutmeg as its boiling. Stir until it begins to thicken, then reduce to simmer for 35-40 min. Add in the cream/non-dairy and molasses/brown sugar.
Combine berries and water in small sauce pan, add in sugar or molasses. Bring to a simmer on medium heat. Cook 8 - 9 min or until tender and the berries still hold their shape.
Decide porridge among 4 bowls and top with the berry compote.
Honey Scones -
Sounds delicious and from the same book as above. Great for Imbolc as well.
Ingredients -
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 TBLS brown sugar (packed)
1 TBLS baking powder
6 TBLS butter, melted
½ cup old fashioned oats
1 TBLS granulated sugar
½ tsp salt
¼ cup whipping cream
¼ cup milk
1 egg
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. While heating line the baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the oats. Whisk the milk, cream, melted butter and egg in a separate bowl. Stir wet ingredients into dry until the dough just comes together.
Turn dough onto a floured surface and pat dough into a ¾ in thick circle. Cut the circle into eight triangles.
Arrange triangles onto the baking sheet and bake for 12 - 15 min or until golden brown. Let cool 15 and serve warm, with butter and honey.
Feast Dishes -
Sides -
Here are some side dishes that I thought up or read for your feast. These will be in less recipe format then the ones above.
Savory Strawberry Salad -
Ingredients
½ purple onion
1 container strawberries, rinsed and sliced into ¼ inch slices
6 - 8 roma tomatoes sliced into ¼ inch slices
2 TBLS balsamic vinegar
salt to taste
Slice onions into ¼ inch quarter rings. Add to a non-reactive bowl. Add the strawberries and tomatoes.
Add balsamic vinegar and a pinch of salt.
Place into the fridge overnight, or the freezer for 1 hour.
Remove the bowl and let come to room temperature. Serve.
Spring Salad Mix -
Add a fresh made dressing to a bag of salad mix!
Try these -
honey, lime, oilive oil and dill
raspberries, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and salt and pepper
rice wine vinegar, cilantro, lime, and canola oil
lemon, dijon mustard, clove of garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper
Simple Sides -
Irish Cheddar and fresh fruit
Colcannon
Fire Roasted Corn on the cob
Fire Roasted Bell Peppers dipped into a creamy dressing (Ranch)
Carrots and Celery dipped into hummus
Local fresh produce, raw and ready to eat!
Red cabbage and sliced apple slaw
Main Course -
The main dish should be something that reflects the season, and your celebration. If you are having a bon fire, hot dogs, sausages and other food roasted over the fire are appropriate.
Or fire up the barbecue and grill up some some meat! Carne asada, which is a popular summer meat to grill in SoCal, it is marinated strip steak in lime and other seasonings, and great for this holiday. Also try lime and tequila marinated chicken, grilled salmon, or hamburgers.
Not going to be outside? Try roasting or broiling in the oven. A good beef roast is great, or maybe some broiled fish.
Vegatarian? try boca burgers, or other veggie burgers, grilled portabellos with cheese on top, or some seasonal veggies on the grill! I love roasted zucchini on the barbecue or in the broiler.
Do what is good to you and appropriate for your diet/nutritional needs and what is in season. Just because the ancient Irish folk ate something at this holiday, it doesn’t mean we can’t eat what we have available or even the modern equivalent of it!
Drinks -
Gewurztraminer with Elderberry Syrup and fresh strawberries and blackberries
May Wine - ½ cup of dried sweet woodruff leaves, 1 bottle of Riesling wine, 1 bottle of Sekt (German sparkling wine) or champagne, ¾ cups organic strawberries, chopped. And a pinch of fresh sweet woodruff flowers for garnish
Meyer Lemonade infused with lavender and mint
Fresh brewed floral tea, such as chamomile, with honey or infused 3 flower sugar, from my other post.
Desserts - I am going to make a whole separate post for Bealtaine desserts!
I hope you enjoyed my post on the foods and recipes I put together for this year’s Beltane!
This post is part of a series of animistic, spirit-oriented spellcasting for beginners. Go to the masterpost to see them all.
I can feel all of you veterans rolling your eyes into the back of your heads.
I know, I know.
But as this series is intended to lay out as many tools as possible on the Table Of Take What You Need, I'd be remiss to not talk about circles at least once.
Let's also maybe talk about why they're such a frikkin controversial AND ubiquitous issue!
Full disclosure: I use circles relatively often. The quick kind that takes 5 seconds to cast. I didn't do 'em when I was immobile though because yeah, standing up and turning in a circle whenever you want isn't a universal experience.
But let's get to it!
What the hell are magic circles, anyway?
Most discourse on Tumblr about magic circles is "do them!" or "you don't have to do them!" but it rarely actually gets, you know, discussed.
For the purposes of this series, a magic circle is a temporary circular energy barrier that can be "programmed" to do a variety of helpful ritual tasks.
This energy barrier is usually placed around the entire spellworking or ritual space, so that the practitioner and all the tools they use are inside of it.
Sometimes, this barrier is marked by a physical object, such as a rope or a line of flour. Often, especially in solitary practice, there is no physical boundary that corresponds to the circle.
When employed, the circle is usually raised as one of the very first ritual acts during a spell (sometimes, space clearing or prayers are done beforehand). Typically, the circle is lowered/removed as the very last step, or whenever the ritual space is no longer needed (sometimes the witch might then take spell remnants to be ritually released somewhere else, for example, and usually no circle is ever required for that part).
Magic circles are usually reserved for more lengthy, focused acts of magic. They are rarely employed by people who are like, visualizing a glamour in front of a mirror, or doing a charm to get out of traffic, or stuff like that.
(Actual steps for circle-casting will come in a later post in this series; check the masterpost)
Why are they problematic?
Because while Wicca did not invent the concept of magic circles, Wicca very much popularized a certain version of them in Western occultism.
And a lot (a lot) of Western practitioners, especially those very unaware that there are global magical practices that have nothing to do with Western Wicca or Western witchcraft, like to go around preaching that this particular aspect of their very specific cultural religious practice needs to be followed by everyone who does magic ever, seriously, even if your cultural tradition has been doing fine without them for the last four thousand years, because some British guys decided on the real rules eighty years ago.
And people very rightly push back against that, because circles are absolutely not 100% necessary for any working of magic.
In popular rhetoric, circles have also been largely reduced to being nothing more than temporary warding, used to keep evil spirits away from the shining diamond of your spell.
So when a lot of people believe that all a circle does is protect against "bad" energies and spirits, kind of a reverse justification happens: circles become necessary because bad energies and spirits are everywhere, and unless we use circles we're at risk of being preyed upon... and this promotes a feedback loop many of us have heard all our lives: that witchcraft is scary and dangerous, filled with evil things, and you need to be really really careful or else you're gunna get snatched up by a demon.
And then more people push back against this, because modern contemporary witchcraft has literally evolved to be some pretty safe shit, and no, you don't have to ward every iota of your heart out just to avoid bad stuff waiting to trip you at every turn.
What are magic circles good for?
Tons of stuff! And that's what makes them really useful tech!
Here's what we have to get on the table right away, though: an energy barrier is just an energy barrier until you ask it to do something different. You can construct circles that are purely protective and actively limit any magic or spirits from coming or leaving. You can construct circles that are basically a throne room for a sacred power to temporarily visit. You can construct them to create a liminal space that joins the physical world with the spirit worlds and makes it much easier for spirits and magics to flow back and forth.
No circle automatically does all the stuff I'm about to list, except the protection thing: you have to include what you want in the construction of the circle itself. (I'm pretty sure this is why people believe circles are only protective and even trap magic inside... yep, it does automatically, if you don't know what you're doing).
Depending on how you cast a circle, it can trance you out and help you reach a state of spiritual gnosis, and then stuff gets real wild in an awesome way.
If you've ever heard of people talking about "trancing" or entering a "magical headspace", this is one way to do it. Literally walking or dancing around in a big circle, focusing on higher powers, and chanting repetitive words can yeet you right out of normal modes of consciousness and into Big Spiritual Time. (Plus also, the more time and energy you spend on circles, the stronger and more powerful they become, so that's helpful).
Magic circles can connect the worlds.
"I don't want to connect to the spirit world!" Then get yee off my animistic, spirit-oriented spellcrafting series, where we're hella going to be talking to a buttload of spirits by the time all is said and done. In all seriousness though, if you're having trouble with spirit communication, casting a circle can help. It also just helps with gathering and accumulating various energies and powers, in general.
Magic circles raise power.
Raising power is an extremely vital component of spellcraft IMO, and it's so weird that people never talk about it? Like I'm either just missing a huge segment of magical discourse or y'all have found a sneaky new way to power your spells that I missed out on.
Anyway, circles are made of energy and casting them brings power into your immediate energetic space. Yeah, most of the power is bound into an energy barrier, but you're still probably going to have tapped into an energy source greater than what you use up (whether it be your own energy or that from an external source). By casting the circle, you get into the groove of calling and raising power.
I guess this is a pretty minor point, but it clicks nicely for me.
Magic circles are a cauldron that collects energies into some nice spell stew.
Depending on how much power you raise, there can be way too much of it for you to singularly hold in your focus. Like if the extent of the energy you raise can be held in the palm of your hand, you don't need a big magical bucket to hold it for you - you've got it on your own. But if you raise so much energy that you're swimming in it like a dolphin in the deep end of the ocean, like to the point where you feel you might literally pass out and ascend to the next plane of existence, a circle is really going to help keep all that power together in one place for you. Or else it's going to get all over your house like glitter and you'll be cleaning little spell crumbs out of corners for the next ten months.
Magic circles are an ideal way to host visiting spiritual powers.
This hearkens back to the "calling the quarters" thing in Wicca. But basically, as you cast a magic circle, you can pause during (or after) you make it, and open special doorways in the circle to allow significant spirits to arrive and oversee your working. This works out well in a ritual format because since the circle is usually cast at the very beginning of a ritual, important spirits that need to be there for the whole thing can be called at the same time - and dismissed at the very end when the circle is closed. It just slots together nicely. In my way of working, calling special spirits to oversee an act of magic significantly increases its power and effectiveness.
Magic circles actually are a fantastic method of protection.
There's something magical about circles. The damn things are just nigh impossible for spirits to get through. That's why we're always summoning spirits inside of circles. Now, don't get me wrong, you're not likely to need protection for your average spell (especially if you already have home wards or personal wards set up). But there are situations in which even an average, everyday practitioner might seriously benefit from taking a little extra care:
If you're doing a ritual in an outdoors/wilderness space, it's going to be fucking chock-full of spirits and no, just because they're not malevolent, does not mean you want any random spirit getting sucked into your spell.
If you're doing divination for others, they can have icky stuff around them that follows you back (and unfortunately, I find this to be more common for people who dwell within occult circles).
If you have any concern that malefica or an unwanted spirit are on you, casting a circle will let you perform divination without any concern that your readings are being affected.
If you're doing a spell in an unfamiliar space (like a spell with a friend at their home), and you don't like the energy there, a quick circle will provide a temporary safe space to perform the ritual.
When to employ magic circles:
Whenever you want to. If you're open to suggestions, though:
As a ritual component to help you delineate when your spells begin and end,
When you intend to raise a very significant amount of energy,
When you intend to "open the roads" and invite certain spiritual powers to attend,
When you're in a space heavily populated by spirits that might choose to become involved in your working without being invited,
When you're uncomfortable with the energies in your environment,
and if you're troubleshooting success with your manifestation, so you're willing to give it a try just to see what's up.

Ancient orisons are powerful not because they are in Latin or in another old language. But because they draw their power from all the witches throughout the centuries who have used them. Every time someone recites an incantation, it echoes with the voices of those who, ages ago, also spoke them.
The Gratitude of Those It Helped
If a spell is protective or healing, then the thanksgiving of every soul who benefited from it acts like oil that lubricates its engine, keeping it alive, and preventing it from corroding.
The Fear of Those It Harmed
If a spell is malicious or avenging, then the terror of every soul who suffered from it acts like wind that feeds a wildfire, keeping it alive and eternally spreading.
The Faith of Those Who Saw or Heard It
One reason that a modern spell can never outrank an ancient one is because almost every single mortal who came across an old spell believed in it. Feared it, cherished it or hated it. But believed in it. Priests, nuns, royals, peasants, merchants, children. The lingering memory of their existence enhances the gratitude or the fear of those whom a spell has affected. The integrity of modern spells, on the other hand, is eternally vulnerable to the sneers and dismissal of today’s skeptics who come across them on the internet, magazines or whatnot.
The Deities and Entities Invoked for It
Ancient spells are associated with certain gods, demons, fairies or other immortal creatures. Whenever these spells are spoken or written down, the old ones can feel a presence. They draw near to the one who cast it, judging if the invitation deserves to be accepted. And then they bend the laws of the Universe to help the witch make magic happen.
The Passion of the Mortal Who Cast It
When teaching spellcraft to the initiates, our elders always emphasize the importance of emotions. Exploding anger when casting curses. Caring devotion when casting protection. An elixir of hope and desperation when casting a spell of desire. Because none of the above matters when this requirement is not satisfied. Ancient words are the engine. The others are what keeps it in good condition. But it is the witch’s faith and feeling that provide the fuel to keep it running.
A few days ago, I got an idea for a new tool to use in my Witchcraft and Spirituality practices. The idea was greatly inspired by @/theartandsexwitch on Instagram, as she invented this for visualizing your feelings - the idea of using body maps.
What is a Body Map?
A body map is a simple drawing in the shape of a human body, using it as a tool for a variety of things. Now this might not sound revolutionary, and maybe you‘ve been using something like this for a very long time, but I honestly haven‘t thought of this simple, yet so versatile and effective tool, and I just needed to share it with people.
... I personally loved the idea, so I drew myself a body map in Procreate and started using it as a tool for self-love, drawing my energies and visualizing my feelings.
... This is the body map I drew based on my own body (feel free to use it privately, but please don‘t share it online without crediting me.)
How to use a Body Map?
How you use this tool depends on your purpose and end goal. I would recommend drawing your own body map, based on the body that you want to represent. You can do that digitally or on paper. Maybe you also want to have different options for different purposes. For example a general female, male and nonbinary version. Of course, you can also make a trans-, or any other versions!
If you don‘t want to draw your own, you can find some online or go to theartandsexwitch.com and subscribe to her newsletter to get her body map guide! There‘s also a step by step explanation on how to use the body map to visualize your feelings!
When you have your finished body map, you can basically do whatever you want with it - get creative! You can print it out, glue it in your journal and color it there or do the whole thing digitally. Use both the front and the back or just the front or the back, turn it around, draw a body sitting down etc. The ideas on how to use it are endless! But to give you some inspiration, here are...
Some Ideas for using a Body Map:
Drawing in energies. Flowing energy; positive and negative energy, blockades; with different colors; using different symbols etc.
Tracking your energies, aura, feelings etc. regularly. For example journaling your daily/weekly energy; before/after a ritual etc.
General energy studies and practices
Chakra studies and practices
Aura studies and practices
Energy, Chakra or Aura Readings
For Spells, Rituals or Enchantments, for example to represent yourself or someone else
Art Magick
Sex Magick
Working with Deities
Body Correspondences
Sigil Magick, for example if you don‘t want to draw Sigils directly on your own body; or you have someone that you want to draw a Sigil on and can‘t do it on them
Healing and cleansing practices, for example to locate and heal energy blockades
Using it instead of Visualization. I know some people have trouble visualizing energy and this is a great way to do it
Self-love and/or self-care practices
Manifesting certain energies, body features or other properties
Simply as a meditative, relaxing or fun, creative coloring experience!
To give you an example on a colored version, here‘s one of mine. Can you tell, I had some overflowing sexual energy and was really feeling spring that day ;) ?
I hope you can find this tool and my ideas somewhat useful! I‘m open for feedback :)
Again, all credits go to Allyson aka @/theartandsexwitch on Instagram for the main idea, I just re-thought it. She‘s truly amazing, go follow her!
