OK - a very tangential takeoff: Engineering prof assigns students this question: Explain how to determine the height of a very tall building using a barometer.
Obviously meant to use change in barometric pressure with altitude. But one student submitted the following:
There are several ways of doing this
1. On a sunny day, stand the barometer up in the sun, measure the length of its shadow relative to its height, then measure the length of the building’s shadow and calculate its height from that.
2. Go into the stairwell and climb the stairs to the top, marking off the length of the barometer on the wall, giving you the height of the building in “barometer units”.
3. Go onto the roof of the building and drop the barometer off the top and time how long it takes to hit the ground, then calculate the height using the well known formula of 32 ft./sec./sec.
4. Go into the office of the building superintendent and say “If you tell me how tall this building is, I will give you this nice barometer”.
8th post for the Women in Mathematics
Wang Zhenyi (1768–1797) was a scientist from the Qing dynasty. She breached the feudal customs of the time, which hindered women’s rights, by arduously working to educate herself in subjects such as astronomy, mathematics, geography, and medicine.
Zhenyi mastered trigonometry and knew the Pythagorean theorem. She wrote an article called “The Explanation of the Pythagorean Theorem and Trigonometry,”. She admired the mathematician Mei Wending (1633–1721 A.D.). He was famous in the early Qing dynasty and wrote the book, “Principles of Calculation”. Wang Zhenyi became a master of this book, even rewriting it with simpler language, and made it available to others under the title, “The Musts of Calculation”. She was very dedicated in her study of mathematics and wrote a book called “The Simple Principles of Calculation” when she was twenty-four. Her studies were difficult and she once said, “There were times that I had to put down my pen and sigh. But I love the subject, I do not give up.”
Enjoy π-day!
Topic #1: Numbers
Before developing any complex mathematical theorems or theory in general, people had to understand and use numbers. You might think that this is an easy concept to understand, but philosophers have been arguing for a while about them. The big question is if the concept of numbers exists outside of our cultures and brain. Are numbers something we, humans, have invented or are they discovered?…

The number e, known as Euler’s number, is the limit of (1 + 1/n)^n as n approaches infinity, an expression that arises in the study of compound interest. It is also the unique positive number a such that the graph of the function y = a^x has a slope of 1 at x = 0. There are many other ways to characterize it 😉 https://www.instagram.com/p/CIycKcbDsAQ/?igshid=1pay6bcbfrcqi
Every single odd number has an “e” in it.
LISTEN-
Not all of them. 30 and 50 aren’t spelled with the letter e in it …
father god
…if you can split a number in half evenly, it’s even. 30 and 50 are odd.
-_-’
(15+15=30
25+25=30)
25+25 = 30? You sure about that??
Lord have mercy….
Bye
3 days into 2018 smh
LMAOOOOOOO
One
Three
Five
Nine
And since everything else after that is a variant of these numbers, then all odds have the letter ‘E’.
🗣YOU FORGOT SEVEN!!
It keeps getting worse.
LMAOOO WHAT IS GOING ON
My head hurts…
This is why that Tumblr University shit was the dumbest idea ever just look at this
who failed yall?
IM SCREAMING
You whole ass forgot about eight - a number with an e and is pretty fucking even
why would 8 be brought up if it’s EVEN in a post about ODDS??????? the post said “every single ODD number has an ‘e’ in it” not “every single number with an ‘e’ is odd” what the fuck
3 days until 2019 and we’re still here
happy New year’s eve
I’m going to bring this flaming dumpster into 2019 so future generations can see what a mistake Tumblr was
Er, guys two is odd and doesn’t have an e. Just saying…
did you deadass just try to tell me two is odd? i’m fucking crying throw the whole website away
Reblogging for the last one😂
The one thing I notice is that no matter how much you want to throw this site away, you just can’t.
TWO IS ODD?!?! PFFFTT I’M SCREAMING
Wait what about zero that’s an odd number ,no?
ok but hear me out fifty and thirty make up for the fact they have no e by the way they are pronounces third-E fifth-E
bro why do 30 and 50 matter THEY’RE FUCKING EVEN
what the actual fuck is happening
this post murdered me
Hey bro would you do me a platonic solid
Sorry, best I can do is a great icosahedron.
Bro. That's. That's a platonic solid, bro.
does this look platonic to you?
Nah, that shape fucks.
Find me any other website with interactions like these
In 2016, over 75,000 mail-in ballots were left uncounted and discarded because they were received after mail-in voting deadlines, which all vary by state, according to CBS news.
Some states like California allow you to check with the Registrar of Voters on-line to verify both if a ballot has issued and if it was received to help prevent voting errors.
Remember, the most common forms of voter fraud are 1) gerrymandering, 2) voter suppression and 3) foreign participation through both lobbying and online misinformation.
OCTOBER 13. IT’S BEING DELIBERATELY SLOWED. OCTOBER 13.
Also know that in most states you can also drop it off either at a polling place or the county elections office too
The postal service is being deliberately slowed.
i’m not american but i’m still reblogging this
please please please everyone who can vote make sure you’re registered and check when your ballot needs to be in. they are deliberately slowing things down so be careful and cautious about this, play it safe.
ELECTION DAY IS OCTOBER 20 OCTOBER 13
OCTOBER 13 YA’LL
8 DAYS LEFT
Donald Trump announced today that he is adding another twenty candidates to potentially fill any vacancies on the Supreme Court. I’m sure everyone on this list is an awful human being and a danger to society, but I want to highlight three of these new candidates:
Ted Cruz (49) — the Texas Senator who’s a notoriously anti-LGBT bigot, among other things.
Tom Cotton (43) — the Arkansas Senator who described slavery as a necessary evil and (pictured above) made it immediately clear after the announcement was made that he would (1) attack women’s reproductive rights, (2) defend gun rights, and (3) protect the “right to worship” — which is just a smokescreen for denying queer people basic civil liberties and again denying women their right to choose under the veneer of “religious freedom.”
Daniel Cameron (34) — the Kentucky Attorney General who has refused to press charges against the police officers who killed Breonna Taylor. He took over 150 days to even reach out to Taylor’s family after she was murdered.
Justice Ginsburg recently announced that she’s battling cancer — her and Justice Breyer, two of the only four remaining left-leaning justices on the court, are both in their 80s. If Trump is reelected, he will almost certainly be able to replace the two of them with far-right conservatives who will be a danger to minorities — and these men aren’t just dangerous because of their values, but because of their relatively young ages. You need to know that these are lifetime appointments to the Court and Cruz, Cameron, and Cotton have an average age of 42. Again, for context, RBG is 87 years old. Trump could singlehandedly guarantee a 7-2 conservative Supreme Court for decades to come, leaving lasting damage long after he leaves the White House — damage that will affect us, our children, and our children’s children.
This election is not the time for complacency. Almost 200,000 Americans have died because of our President’s incompetence. If he is reelected, I can’t even begin to fathom what could happen to our country. You need to vote this election and make sure that these monsters never find themselves in a position of such power. Vote for Biden.
You aren't just voting for President for the next four years. You're voting for judges for the next forty.
this is why you need to vote blue no matter HOW much you hate the biden/harris ticket. These motherfuckers will fuck up the supreme court for AT LEAST 30 years, if not more, because the supreme court is a LIFE TIME APPOINTMENT and these dudes are YOUNG. Can you even imagine Ted Zodiac Killer Cruz on the fucking SUPREME COURT for the next 30 fucking years? VOTE, and VOTE BLUE

hey y’all! wanna take a minute of your time to help fight for the USPS?
if you haven’t heard, tr*mp is refusing to help the postal service financially during this pandemic (and beyond) in an effort to starve it of funds/resources and kill it off so it can be privatized. also:
obviously this is not great, as tons of us rely on the USPS for all kinds of different reasons, and the privatization of this essential service would have a dramatic effect on the entire nation. namely: voting by mail would become nonexistent (❗️), and the cost of shipping mail and goods will change astronomically.
if this sounds terrible to you (and if you live in the us, then it should!), then text USPS to 50409 to sign the petition and instantly send a signed letter to your senators and representatives. it’s fast, easy, and it’s action that you can take right now.
the letter urges your senators to make the financial support of the USPS a priority, and outlines why the USPS is an essential service in our country that must be defended. here’s my letter:
don’t want to use the text service/send an electronic letter? mail a paper letter to your senator’s office.
you can also call your senators and house representatives at (202)224-3121 and urge them to support the USPS financially.
you can also buy a roll of stamps right now to help financially support the USPS on an individual level!
in conclusion: please take a minute to help support the USPS in any way you can. this is an important issue that affects all of us here in the US.
it would be AWESOME if you could reblog this & spread it, or if you’d rather not reblog this post, then i encourage you to make your own post on the social media of your choice and share with your friends.
thx!
FYI: Petitions and form letters are often ignored by Congressional offices. Call your state’s US Senators and demand they work to pass S. 2965 the USPS Fairness Act, which passed the House and has been sitting in the Senate since FEBRUARY 2020.
Summary of S.2965 - 116th Congress (2019-2020): USPS Fairness Act
The American Postal Workers Union has a good explainer on this, as well as Last Week Tonight. Even before Trump’s DRASTIC directive to screw over USPS, a 2006 law from the Bush administration and Republican-led Congress has basically slowly led to the US postal service’s decline, and this is a final nail in the coffin.
The TLDR is that that 2006 law required the USPS to pre-fund postal workers health care benefits for 75 years, which meant they had to have money for employees who weren’t even BORN yet.
For over a decade, the United States Postal Service has been plagued with the onerous burden of prefunding its retiree health care benefits
Here is more on this issue:
Also, the issue with Trump’s latest target at the USPS isn’t just refusing coronavirus aid. His new appointee to lead it is now purposely handing down directives to restrict employee overtime and late delivery trips so that mail delays start to pile up. The guiding slogan was “every piece, every day.” Now it’s “get in, get out.” Just like Betsy Devos forcing schools to reopen, this will destroy trust in these systems, force reliance on private companies, which is exactly what Trump and the businesspeople he appoints want a) as capitalists and b) to surpress people further as they become more reliant on worse and more expensive services.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mail deliveries could be delayed by a day or more under cost-cutting efforts being imposed by the new postmaster general.
Ohh, finally this one has actionable things to yell at our senate about!
Contact your senators! Just send them a quick email telling them to get their butts in gear! pass S. 2965
https://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
Additionally, if you are financially able to, buy stamps, bags, and other merch from the USPS to support it. It has many cute stamps, lovely tote bags, prints, and many other items in their “gifts” category of the USPS store.
if you dont feel inclined to buy stuff from usps just look at what they have! cute stamps!! rat mug!!! a crop top!!?! make a phone call to your senators and buy some stuff!
