You’re right, it is disgusting. White/light skin ≠ the only kind of beautiful. Relating this to twilight, it’s a heavy issue. The vampires (even non white vampires) become white (or whiter if they’re white) after they’ve turned and it’s definitely pushed that vampire beauty is the most beautiful, magical, and humanly unattainable beauty..... aka whiteness is the most beautiful. No thanks! I don’t agree with that and if you think for 5 seconds before you write snd publish anything, you’d understand “hey, maybe this is problematic and harmful to depict the peak of beauty as whiteness in young adult literature” but unfortunately that wasn’t thought about.

Sure does and I almost included it. Let me do that now. If any of these are incorrect, let me know. I’m not an expert on Mormonism.

Past (and certainly present for some) Mormonism beliefs relating to not just racism, but the Twilight canon of dark skin turning white during vampirism transition:

• dark skin is a “curse” from God

• this “curse” was used to justify slavery (according to Brigham Young and Joseph Smith)

• all souls are white in the highest part of heaven

• dark skin would become light after becoming Mormon aka becoming righteous

• if you abandoned the church, your skin would turn dark

• blackness is a symbol of disobedience to God

• did not allow black men to be ordained into priesthood

• did not allow black men and women to perform in certain ceremonies

As you can see, the vampire transition can be looked at as heavily symbolic of these beliefs.

These are just a few, I’m sure there’s more. The church has spoken out against these and has reformed ... but let’s not act like these sentiments are not lingering or not still held by some members. It’s important to understand how the racist aspects or Twilight are NOT an accident. Feel free to add.

Why did SM make the Cullens so wasteful I mean, driving super fast sports cars, Alice throwing out entire wardrobes regularly, buying and making an entire restaurants worth of food for one human, getting new shit all the time, traveling via plane to other continents when they can run and swim faster than almost all living animals, wasting all that time playing the stock market when they’re already so rich they’ll be fine until the earth implodes, and devouring endless animals in very delicate ecosystems rather than like buying a cow every once in a while.
