But... Stochastic Parrots.

Timnit Gebru was fired from Google in December 2020 for refusing to retract a research paper, and every single warning that paper made about large language models has now happened at a scale the industry spent 4 years trying to make people forget about.

Her name is Timnit Gebru.

She co-led the Ethical AI team at Google. She co-wrote a paper called "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" with Emily Bender at the University of Washington and two other researchers. The paper was 14 pages long. It was submitted to a top AI ethics conference. And it was the reason Google decided that one of the most senior Black women in AI research could no longer work there.

The story Google told publicly was that she resigned. The story she told, confirmed by 2,695 of her colleagues in an open letter, was that she was fired by email while on vacation because she refused to either retract the paper or remove her name from it.

The paper had not even been published yet.

Here is what she actually wrote, and why every prediction inside it has now come true.

The first warning was about scale itself. Bender and Gebru argued that training ever-larger models on ever-larger scrapes of the internet would produce systems that appeared fluent but had no actual understanding of language. They called these systems stochastic parrots because they would repeat patterns from training data with statistical confidence and zero comprehension. The paper predicted that this apparent intelligence would fool both users and developers into trusting outputs that were structurally incapable of being reliable.

This was 2020. GPT-3 had just come out. The paper predicted the hallucination problem before anyone had a word for it.

The second warning was about bias amplification. The paper documented in detail that internet-scale training data contains systematic overrepresentation of dominant viewpoints and underrepresentation of marginalized ones. The models would not just absorb this bias. They would amplify it, because the optimization process rewards confident outputs, and confidence in language patterns tracks frequency in the training set.

The prediction was that hiring tools built on these models would discriminate against women. That healthcare triage tools would underperform on Black patients. That loan approval systems would entrench inequality while presenting their decisions as neutral algorithmic judgment.

Every one of those things has now been documented in deployment.

Amazon's hiring algorithm penalized resumes that contained the word "women" in any context. Healthcare risk scoring algorithms used by major US hospitals were found to systematically underestimate the medical needs of Black patients. Apple Card's credit algorithm gave wives credit lines 10x lower than their husbands for the same financial profile.

The third warning was about environmental cost. The paper calculated that training a single large language model produced emissions equivalent to the lifetime output of 5 cars. The prediction was that the race to scale would create an environmental footprint that would eventually rival entire industries.

In 2024, Google's emissions were up 48% from 2019, and the company explicitly blamed AI infrastructure. Microsoft's were up 29%, same reason. Both companies have now quietly abandoned the climate commitments they were publicly celebrating the year Gebru was fired.

The fourth warning was about documentation. The paper argued that the training datasets being assembled were too large for anyone to actually audit. Nobody at Google, OpenAI, Meta, or any other lab could tell you with confidence what was in the data their models were trained on. This was not a temporary problem to be solved later. It was a permanent feature of the approach.

In 2023, researchers discovered that the LAION-5B dataset, used to train Stable Diffusion and other major image models, contained thousands of images of child sexual abuse material. The companies that had trained on the dataset had no way of knowing. The paper predicted that category of failure 3 years before it was found.

The fifth warning was the one Google cared about most.

Bender and Gebru argued that the deployment of these systems would centralize linguistic and cultural power in the hands of the small number of companies that could afford to train them. The internet would become a place where the dominant voice was a statistical average of dominant voices, presented as a neutral assistant. Languages underrepresented in the training data would degrade over time as more web content was generated by these systems and fed back into the next training run.

This is now happening in real time. A 2024 study found that 57% of new web content in English is AI-generated or AI-assisted. Researchers studying low-resource languages have documented active degradation in translation quality, because the synthetic content fed back into training is itself worse in those languages.

The paper Google fired her for predicted the model collapse problem before model collapse had a name.

The mechanism behind why this all happened is the part of her work that nobody quotes.

Gebru's argument was not that AI is dangerous in some abstract sci-fi sense. Her argument was that AI is dangerous in a very specific structural sense. The technology was being built by a small group of researchers who shared similar backgrounds, worked at similar companies, and were rewarded for shipping products faster than competitors. The incentive structure made it impossible for safety, ethics, and bias concerns to slow anything down. Anyone inside the system who raised those concerns was either ignored, sidelined, or removed.

She was making that argument from inside Google.

Then Google proved her right by removing her.

The team Google had built to make sure their AI was safe was dismantled in 90 days because they did the job they had been hired to do. Margaret Mitchell, the other co-lead of the Ethical AI team, was fired two months after Gebru for searching through her own emails for evidence of how Gebru had been treated.

Gebru did not stop. She founded DAIR, the Distributed AI Research Institute, in 2021. The mission is to do AI research outside the control of the companies that have a financial interest in not hearing the answers.

Every prediction in the Stochastic Parrots paper has now been validated by deployment. Hallucinations are an industry-wide problem the largest labs cannot solve. Bias amplification has been documented in hiring, healthcare, lending, and criminal justice. Environmental costs are larger than entire small countries. Training data audits remain impossible. Model collapse is an active research crisis at every major lab.

The question worth sitting with is the one almost no one in the industry will say out loud.

Every researcher with the technical credibility to call out these problems watched what happened to her in December 2020 and made a calculation about their own career. The number of people willing to speak publicly about safety and ethics issues inside the major AI labs collapsed after that firing and has not recovered.

The researcher Google fired for warning about exactly what is now happening was right.

The company that fired her is now the second-largest deployer of the technology she warned about.

And the people inside that company who agree with her are not allowed to say so.

Vietnam had been the first time he met her.

Back then, she had seemed untouchable. Beautiful in the way wildfires were beautiful—dangerous and impossible to look away from.

Monster identification was still primitive. Most fae could pass for humans, able to bypass the standard testing. She was human, at least on paper. And he would have thought she was, if not for her scent. No human could smell that good.

Sweet. Heady. Intoxicatingly alluring. Every instinct sharpened, drawing him in, demanding he take notice of the ‘human’ woman who walked around the camp like she could kill everyone in it.

Neither of them officially existed, both off the books, ghosts that neither side wanted to acknowledge. Monsters, cryptids, fae whatever designation they went by were considered “Classified Organisms”, weapons to be used at the discretion of their government. The practice going back to WWII when Nazi Germany first deployed feral shifters and experimental hybrids in battle and the rest of the world was left scrambling to find their own monsters. 

 Price belonged to a troop called the BLACK SHUCK: a black-ops unit made up of lethal non-human operatives perfect for guerilla warfare, assassinations, and deniable missions.

Veronica belonged to the NUNASIS squad, her unit classifying her as one of the handlers to the shifters of her unit, infamous for her ability to control her counterparts. No one realized that they were trusting a monster to control other monsters.

Soon after their unit arrived rumors slowly cropped up around the camp. A spirit had appeared in the jungle. Men wandering off patrol only to come back glassy-eyed and smiling, swearing they’d seen an angel in the trees. 

Price knew better the second he finally saw her.

A cigarette dangling from her lips, trying to light it with her waterlogged lighter. The dying light of the day catching on her ashen hair.

She caught him staring and laughed softly.

“Got a light, dragon?” She asked.

He leaned in close enough to light her cigarette with a controlled flicker of flames from his lips, before lighting his cigar.

“I didn’t think they let monsters wander around freely,” She teased, letting out a slow curling of smoke.

“Neither did I,” he winked.

Wrex stood on the edge of a crumbling structure that surrounded the outskirts of the rite location. Back when clans had families it was customary to watch, to witness the success or failure of one's whelp. It hadn’t been done in a long time. They either came back or didn’t whether they were killed in the rite or they wandered into the waste unable to face the challenge set before them by their clan. Their bodies left to rot where they fell if they had no one who cared enough to retrieve their corpse.

They already lost so many children, it was unfortunate that they continued to lose children, they were strong enough to be born but not to flourish. He hoped that with the unification of the clans life would become easier, though the heat in his blood would never allow him a life of leisure, but it would be nice to have Krogan, who were clearly not warriors, be given a purpose outside of fertilizing the soil with their rotting hides.

Shepard lingered behind Grunt, surveying the area with Garrus. Of course she had brought the Turrian with her. When he had been on the Normandy, she had almost exclusively had him and the sniper on her team, and at the time it had been nice, now it made him fidget, a sickly rage building in him that felt too much like jealousy.

Grunt stepped up to the red keystone.

The Jungle That Ate Them

The jungle breathed like a living thing. Thick, humid air clung to their skin like oil. The Amazon pulsed around him–alive, hungry. Trees loomed like cathedral pillars overhead, tangled in vines thick as nooses. Every step sinking deeper into rotting earth.

It watched.

It hunted.

And he knew they were already dead before the sun went down.

The mission had been simple on paper: infiltrate a suspected bioweapons lab deep in the Amazon basin. Recover data. Exfil clean.

There had been reports from the area, disappearances–locals dragged into the trees never to be seen again, livestock torn apart, sighting of something not quite man, not quite beast. Command hadn’t thought it important to the mission. It was just a rogue “bioweapon” lab.

They were wrong on every count.

His team didn’t even made it to the lab.

He could hear his own breath over the static of the comms, short and sharp. His team had gone quiet.

Too quiet.

“Bravo Six, this is Echo four. Do you copy?”

Nothing.

Sanderson crouched low in the mud, his fingers tightening on his rifle.  The air was heavy with the stench of wet rot, old blood, and something else, something worse. They were tracking a bioweapon, but what they’d found wasn’t any human-made disease or gas, they were being hunted by a rogue beast, but it didn’t bleed like any mortal creature they’d faced before. It roared. It tore men apart in seconds. Shaking off bullets as if they were flea bites. It moved like a myth. Like a nightmare come to life.

It had taken Cooper first–just a blur in the canopy–next a splash of blood where he stood, leaves still rustling from the thing that took him. Thompson followed, dragged screaming into the underbrush, voice crackling into the static, gunfire lighting up the underbrush, silhouetting the thing hunting them, before the line went dead.

Now it was just him.

And it was still watching.

He turned just in time to catch a glint of yellow eyes. A mass of muscle and bone, dripping with tar-slick hide. It smelled of death and rot, a low growl that rattled through the air. It hit him hard enough to shatter bone. His gun went flying, and so did he.

And then it was on him, claws and teeth ripping through his vest to sink into his chest.

His last coherent thought as his back hit a tree was don’t scream.

Because the thing liked it when they screamed.

“I thought you said she was in hiding?’ Ghost sneered with a barely audible growl. “Birmingham isn’t exactly off the grid.” 

They had arrived at the sparse safehouse located just outside the city limits before heading for one of the area's more infamous clubs: LAB11.

“Even though she could live off the grid, it would leave her weak.” Price replied, his voice tight as he adjusted the black button up he wore for the umpteenth time. His shoulders were tense, and brows pinched in a mix of pain and concentration. He had shifted, appearing more human, his one wing melting into his back and horns receding, all so they could blend in better with the humans. Price had only done this the one time since the incident. Said it hurt. “As much as she distrust humans, she needs them.” He continued in a tight voice.

Ghost’s lips curled faintly beneath his mask, subconsciously pulling his coat a little tighter around himself, he felt exposed without his military fatigues and signature balaclava. 

“So the succubus is a raver?” He muttered, nose wrinkling. He could feel the bass vibrating in his chest, the scent of sweat, alcohol, and something heady-desire-thick in the air even from outside.

“Veronica goes where the party is.” Price chuffed out a dry laugh, the edge of his lips twitching up with a flash of fondness.

They didn’t bother waiting in the line of humans and monsters, heading straight to the bouncer. He was big, large muscles wrapped in tawny skin, he looked human, save for the silver eyes set in horizontal slits that narrowed as they looked them over. Recognition flickered when he saw Price. “In and out,” the bouncer warned with a slow lowland accent. “And no fire.”

Price nodded and the two slipped in, much to the anger of the first few people in line.

Inside the world exploded in a sea of technicolor. Neon lights cut through the dark in violent flashes-pink, blue, violet and green-strobing across writhing bodies packed shoulder to shoulder. The music wasn’t just loud, it shook the air, sending a rattle through his bones.

Ghost stilled for half a second, hands clenched at his sides till his nails were bitting into the flesh of his palms. He could handle the chaos of war, its where he felt like himself, but here, with all these people he could feel the shadows crawling up his spine desperate to be released. It was overwhelming, setting him on edge.

Waking to the feel of steel strapped against his flesh was not a new sensation, and yet somehow it burned in a way he had never felt. It was like holding his arm over an open flame, not enough to blister but enough to hurt and instinctively try to pull away-but he couldn't. His vision swam, blinking through the white light to see into the white room that surrounded him. This was new, no acridic scent assaulted his senses, no blood staining broken tiles, nothing to focus on as the scientist cut into him.

The beasts in his bloodstream writhed, sluggish and angry, lashing at his insides, but in those few seconds between sleep and awake, he was Gary.

But the moment shattered.

It always did.

Pain followed, each thing fighting to take over. It started low-deep in his bones-then spread outward, a slow, crawling heat that turned molten in seconds. His back arched against the restraints with a strangled gasp, tendons pulling tight enough to snap, claws burst from his hands, fur and scales fighting for space where there was skin, his pupils dilating and constricting between round and vertical slits.

His jaw clenched, teeth grinding as something sharp forced its way along his gums before receding again. A growl bubbled up his throat, wrong in pitch, layered-like more than one voice was trying to speak through the same mouth.

Hungry.

Hurt.

KILL.

The metal groaned, biting into his flesh until he could smell his own blood and burning skin, feeling the tearing of his skin. Whatever new metal the scientist acquired hurt almost as bad as when he put liquid silver in his veins just to see how he’d react.

Where there had been no scent suddenly a pungent sweet fragrance filled the air in a shimmering mist, the beast raged as his body sagged and then peaceful darkness.

This cycle happened three more times.

The metal was replaced the next time, but when he broke them the sweet gasses appeared again.

The second time his body nearly ripped itself apart. And again the gas.

Third, there were no chains, only the tantalizing aroma of food. The need to eat outweighed the war for dominance in his blood, demanding he sate the gnawing hunger in his gut that had been ignored for too long. Talons dragged and dug into the ground as he lunged at the food with teeth and claws, a thick tail slapping at the floor, ripping into the meat till the juices trailed his chin. A rumble of contentment rattled in his chest.

Chapter 1

The smell, or lack of a smell was unnerving. The government scientists did it to avoid triggering a reaction, but for Ghost, it only raised his hackles. His instincts flare with an impending sense of danger, every sense straining in search for a wisp of a scent or the faintest sound.

He hated this place then, and hated it even more now.

The lights were dimmed, yet the room remained stark with its white ceiling, walls and floor. There was no furniture save for the bed where they had strapped Sanderson down. The ‘doctors’ said it was for his own safety, but really it was for theirs -the same as the foot of reinforced steel they called a door and the twenty-foot ceiling, he could only imagine what the walls were made of as they were more than a story below ground.

Ghost looked down from the observation room, through a window he hadn’t known existed when he had been in that same room, right after they had let him out of the steel box which had felt so much like the makeshift coffin Manuel Roba had put him in.

Now it was Sanderson’s turn.

And it broke his heart. Or what was left of the tattered thing.

He hadn’t let Sanderson out of his sight since they found him in that cell in the jungle. Couldn’t bring himself to look away, someone needed to be there for him, to be a witness of the sins that had been committed to him. Ensuring he wasn’t mistreated more than he already had been by that insane beast that had captured him. Ghost could only begin to image what Sanderson had to experience at the hands of the man they identified as Dr. Nicolaus Copernoxus, or at least that’s what the ‘research’ they found said.

He could still smell the smoldering remains of what had been the so-called Doctor Copernoxus. Much like the poor unfortunate souls he made into walking nightmares was placed in a body bag. The site was still being processed. A small army that descended upon the facility when they informed command what they found, intent on securing it and whatever remains. It wasn’t just soldiers they brought, but government scientists too. It would likely take weeks or longer for them to tally the full number of victims. The actual count might never be known, due to the Dreadmire that been acting as the laboratories guard dog, the species supposedly having the ability to digest bones, complicating the grim work of recovery and identification.

And as daunting as a task that was, getting Sanderson out had been just as tedious. 

It had taken too long to leave, Ghost wanted nothing more than to get Gary out of there as soon as possible. But Gary was more animal than man, lashing out within the cramped confines of the cell whenever anyone approached. Mismatched claws reaching through the bars to slash at anyone who wasn’t Ghost or Price.  When it was Ghost, for only a moment the monster living in Gary would recede before howling out in anguished wails, gripping his head like it might explode. And when it was Price, the beast in Gary would still and tense, as if stuck between the need to fight or flee, the look in his eyes though was like a predator sizing up an opponent for territory.

A scientist had to use a tranquilizer gun on Gary, but they learned fairly quickly one wasn't enough. He staggered for minutes before charging the cage, the bars bowing and groaning under the force. It took five to knock him unconscious and another one every 20 minutes to keep him that way, just so they could place him in a new cage. His body wrapped in chains, placed in a steel box to be flown back to this place.

A nagging guilt persisted in Ghost’s chest, nagging and picking at the scrapped remnants of a past and once hopeful future that had been forcefully ripped from him–from them.

“I’m going to help you Gary,” Ghost whispered to himself as he stared down at Gary through the glass. “I promise.”

Price entered the observation room, coming to stand next to Ghost, one wing draped low behind his shoulder. “We don’t know what he is yet.” Price uncrossed his arms, placing a hand to Ghost’s shoulder. “But he's  still a soldier. And if willing… we can give him purpose again.”

That is all I want to share at this point. But I guess I really just want to know if this is worth continuing.

⚠️Warning⚠️: This story deals with non-consensual body modification/human experimentation, and healing from trauma. Definitely going to be a lot of talk about PTSD and how there are so many different types of it and how people heal isn't linear nor is it going to be the same for every person, nor should you try to be the hero for someone who is healing simply out of guilt.

Chapter 1

The smell, or lack of a smell was unnerving. The government scientists did it to avoid triggering a reaction, but for Ghost, it only raised his hackles. His instincts flare with an impending sense of danger, every sense straining in search for a wisp of a scent or the faintest sound.

He hated this place then, and hated it even more now.

The lights were dimmed, yet the room remained stark with its white ceiling, walls and floor. There was no furniture save for the bed where they had strapped Sanderson down. The ‘doctors’ said it was for his own safety, but really it was for theirs -the same as the foot of reinforced steel they called a door and the twenty-foot ceiling, he could only imagine what the walls were made of as they were more than a story below ground.

Ghost looked down from the observation room, through a window he hadn’t known existed when he had been in that same room, right after they had let him out of the steel box which had felt so much like the makeshift coffin Manuel Roba had put him in.

Now it was Sanderson’s turn.

And it broke his heart. Or what was left of the tattered thing.

He hadn’t let Sanderson out of his sight since they found him in that cell in the jungle. Couldn’t bring himself to look away, someone needed to be there for him, to be a witness of the sins that had been committed to him. Ensuring he wasn’t mistreated more than he already had been by that insane beast that had captured him. Ghost could only begin to image what Sanderson had to experience at the hands of the man they identified as Dr. Nicolaus Copernoxus, or at least that’s what the ‘research’ they found said.

He could still smell the smoldering remains of what had been the so-called Doctor Copernoxus. Much like the poor unfortunate souls he made into walking nightmares was placed in a body bag. The site was still being processed. A small army that descended upon the facility when they informed command what they found, intent on securing it and whatever remains. It wasn’t just soldiers they brought, but government scientists too. It would likely take weeks or longer for them to tally the full number of victims. The actual count might never be known, due to the Dreadmire that been acting as the laboratories guard dog, the species supposedly having the ability to digest bones, complicating the grim work of recovery and identification.

And as daunting as a task that was, getting Sanderson out had been just as tedious. 

It had taken too long to leave, Ghost wanted nothing more than to get Gary out of there as soon as possible. But Gary was more animal than man, lashing out within the cramped confines of the cell whenever anyone approached. Mismatched claws reaching through the bars to slash at anyone who wasn’t Ghost or Price.  When it was Ghost, for only a moment the monster living in Gary would recede before howling out in anguished wails, gripping his head like it might explode. And when it was Price, the beast in Gary would still and tense, as if stuck between the need to fight or flee, the look in his eyes though was like a predator sizing up an opponent for territory.

A scientist had to use a tranquilizer gun on Gary, but they learned fairly quickly one wasn't enough. He staggered for minutes before charging the cage, the bars bowing and groaning under the force. It took five to knock him unconscious and another one every 20 minutes to keep him that way, just so they could place him in a new cage. His body wrapped in chains, placed in a steel box to be flown back to this place.

A nagging guilt persisted in Ghost’s chest, nagging and picking at the scrapped remnants of a past and once hopeful future that had been forcefully ripped from him–from them.

“I’m going to help you Gary,” Ghost whispered to himself as he stared down at Gary through the glass. “I promise.”

Price entered the observation room, coming to stand next to Ghost, one wing draped low behind his shoulder. “We don’t know what he is yet.” Price uncrossed his arms, placing a hand to Ghost’s shoulder. “But he's  still a soldier. And if willing… we can give him purpose again.”

wolfYLady: So I went ahead and wrote it! Only a few chapters planned but I got excited!

I've had limited experience with consoles and didn't get into gaming until 2021.

I haven't been writing, just can't find the strength or will to. I just haven't felt like what I have to offer is enough, not even for myself. Depression sucks, and it sucks out everything enjoyable.

But I have been reading, keeps the mind busy. Officially read 20 out of the 52 books for the year goal. (I never count Manga or books I DNF otherwise I'm at 30+)

So this might turn into a blog about books I've read until I can write again.

Just celebrated my birthday, its hard to be happy when the women I thought of as a mom literally died on my birthday. So been a hard few months. My depression just skyrocketed, so I haven't been writing.

Thought I'd give a little update to the few people who actually like my work.
