if the only way you can enjoy a piece of media is to insert romance when there’s next to none in the original i think you have the personality and imagination of wet cardboard

i thought i’d genuinely finally see a fandom where shipping/romance isn’t prioritized over everything else, including the original themes of the media itself

and in my lifetime (yes it genuinely feels that bad) i never thought i’d see a PROTAGONIST actually widely headcanoned as aroace instead of from 3-5 people including me

but of course i can’t have shit and that barely lasted before the allos™️ got their grubby hands on phm

i can’t even check the aroace grace tag anymore without seeing ship content bc “aroaces can still date” or whatever their excuse is now i’m so fucking tired 🫩

I like to think Adrian had the response that parents have to their kids bringing home stray animals, to Rocky bringing Grace home.

Like:

Week 1: "Rocky, we can't keep him! He's a teacher he has to go home and see his students! He probably has friends!"

Week 2: "Fine, we can keep him a little while but im not walking him. You have to take care of him."

Week 3: "What i only give him treats occasionally! He's not fat! He's just fluffy! Remember when he was starving and sick?! We have to give him treats how else will he survive? Better hes fluffy than starved! No, I'm not attached! We're not keeping him! We're just getting him healthy!"

Week 4: "Shhh! ROCKY! He's sleeping on me rn, be quiet! You'll wake him! Rocky idk what to do, I have to pee and my leg has fallen asleep. No, I can't move! I'd wake him up! Apparently I still have more to say about DWP 2 and this time it's going to be about the dinner scene which was so devastating, so heartbreaking and so masterfully done that it's been residing in my brain ever since I've seen it.

We first have Miranda basically begging for the billionaire idiot to listen to her, pleading with him for her own position first (without actually saying it) and pivoting to art and tradition from that, in a last attempt to save herself and everything she believes in. It's sad, it's pathetic even. We know it's not going to work.

Then the techbro (after saying Runway could be fully AI) comes with the short, surprisingly eloquent monologue about civilizations being ruined and Pompeii being taken by lava (which, by the way, is not historically accurate, it was the ash that got Pompeii, not the lava) and how that is a good thing, how everyone and especially Miranda needs to accept being destroyed by the future coming at her (also not historically correct, most Pompeians actually evacuated and saved themselves). It's actually beautiful in how fucking bleak it is.

Then Miranda leaves and walks through that luxurious shopping mall surrounded by legacy brands, completely alone and wearing the black glittery outfit that very much evokes ash and cold lava, as if she was trapped in it just like Pompeii. It's so good. So dark. And so beautiful.

i love how the devil wears prada 2 seems to tackle society losing touch with analog media like magazines, journalists getting laid off in the name of optimization and profit, and this growing collective delusion that ai can replace the deeply human, deeply soulful thing that art has always been

I wonder if Rocky and Adrian struggled to reconnect when Rocky came back.

Because Rocky spent decades alone in space. He watched his entire crew die, probably feared he would be next because he didn't understand what killed them. He had to sleep alone, probably was exposed to an unspecified amount of radiation himself when he left his safe space by the engines. Then he got stranded a second time with no hope of ever making it home and saving his planet until Grace came back for him.

All of that does things to a person, physically and mentally. And we don't know what Adrian went through while Rocky was away. We don't know how he coped with the waiting and hoping, if he was pressured to move on by society. We don't know what he thought of Grace and the bond that had formed between him and Rocky. Was he jealous? Did he feel cast aside?

I don't know, I just wish we knew more about those first few days and weeks after Rocky and Grace arrived on Erid because they couldn't have been easy for anyone.

Since time passes differently in space compared to on a planet, more time has passed on Erid than for Rocky.

So, when Rocky gets home and introduces Grace to Adrian he says something like “This is my partner of 190 earth years equals XY erid years.” And all eridians nearby stop and are like “That’s not right! It’s XYZ years!”

So, every one thinks Rocky had gone mad being alone in space and Grace has to give an impromptu lesson on relativity.

Anyway, Adrian now has bragging rights because they’ve been in that relationship longer than Rocky, which would be a winning argument for any disagreement between them if Rocky wasn’t already agreeing to everything Adrian wanted in the first place.

Others have said it and I'm gonna say it too: This film is beautiful.

This movie is so colorful and it's like a breath of fresh air in today's "blockbuster" movie era where everything is dull, washed out, too dark, desaturated, or blue. The space scenes especially are full of warm colors and hues. Planet Adrian? fucking gorgeous. The STARS even have color, which is actually astronomically accurate thank you very much, stars are not all white, they range from red to orange to yellow to white to blue!! And you can SEE than in the space scenes!

Speaking of seeing, you can see every scene in this movie because it's actually well-lit because they're not trying to hide bad CGI. So much of the movie is actual real models and puppets and line work and practical effects! They don't want to hide it, they want you to see it!

And the LIGHT? Oh my god the role of light in this movie. It should be considered a character in its own right. There's a scene where Grace is looking for Rocky and the light literally guides him down the hall. Light is constantly moving and changing in this film within the same cut, it's absolutely incredible. Light is so IMPORTANT in this film. It's directional, it's dynamic, it changes colors, it's vibrant! So many modern films can't do that because of the CGI; they need flat, ambient, consistent lighting to make the modeling work easier. Not in this movie!!

Grace becoming the platonic third to Rocky and Adrian’s relationship. Adrian instantly loving grace because he not only saved their planet but he was willing to sacrifice himself to save them all and also Rocky specifically. Rocky going to visit grace and Adrian is already there and they’re swapping embarrassing Rocky stories with grace. (“Adrian is Grace’s new favorite Eridian, question? Grace not need Rocky anymore, question? Grace ABANDON Rocky, question?!”) Rocky and Adrian staying overnight and sleeping in a pile on top of grace. Adrian at the end of the movie working on tweaking grace’s biodome so he’s as comfortable as possible

There's something so poetic about Grace's tether to the Hail Mary being red whenever he's out on a space walk. Like one red line may have brought you out here and doomed you to a terrifying death all alone, but another red line will hold you steady and keep you safe as you reach out and connect with the person that will save your life

i feel like an underrated insane part of the project hail mary verse is that Every Star In The Vicinity is infected. Around both Earth and Erid. The Sun is dimming, the Earth is freezing, and the stars we had in common with the Ancient Greek, the Neanderthals, the first fish to pull itself out of the much, are blinking out of existence. That's wild. That's terrifying.

Man, imagine what the Hail Mary would look like if Adiran had intelligent life. Like imagine, an alien ship starts orbiting Earth and just sits there for two weeks before it lowers some foreign technology into the atmosphere from orbit and then starts blasting energy into the sky, ionizing the air and by the time we've been able to put together a mission to see what's going on, because theres no way we get a craft launched that quickly, the aliens are gone and they've left 200,000 chain links of space garbage floating in orbit

there is something so charmingly sincere about grace seeing what is undoubtedly the most amazing sight of his entire life and immediately telling rocky to name it after his spouse

what if Rocky & Adrian in Erid's pre-Astrophage times were DINK Eridians, who were focused on their respective careers and both in agreement that neither of them wanted to raise pebbles of their own?

and then after Rocky sails off into the skies to save Erid and doesn't return, Adrian's family and friends close ranks around them to make sure Adrian doesn't isolate themselves in grief, and one consequence is that Adrian spends a bit more time around their pebble relatives and the pebbles of their friends. and Adrian decides that if Rocky were to miraculously return, Adrian would want to raise pebbles with Rocky if Rocky were open to that.

(But time passes, and passes, and no word of the ship ever makes it back to Erid, and Adrian silently bargains with the universe -- if it would just be merciful and return Rocky to them, they would stay silent on the subject of pebbles until the end of time if that was what Rocky wanted.)

and years later, as Grace and Rocky make their way to Erid aboard the Hail Mary, the two talk and talk and talk about all kinds of things. and Rocky listens to Grace as he recovers and reminisces on all his fond memories of his young human students back on Earth, and Rocky realizes that he himself hasn't actually like. just hung out with pebbles all that much? ever since he was a pebble himself, he was highly dedicated to developing his career as an engineer -- when would he have had the time or opportunity to interact with pebbles, anyway? but Grace makes human kids sound like such amazing little people. Rocky wonders if Eridian pebbles on Erid these days are like that too. and Rocky decides that if Adrian were to miraculously be waiting for him still, Rocky would want to raise pebbles with Adrian if Adrian were open to that.

(But so much time has passed since Rocky left Erid. Rocky knows he's changed, and surely Adrian must have changed -- could they possibly have changed in compatible directions, while so far apart? how much good fortune in the universe could possibly be left for Rocky by now, after he used up so much of it to meet Grace and obtain the solution to save Erid? and Rocky silently bargains with the universe -- he won't press his luck; if Adrian still wants him, that'll be enough, pebbles or no pebbles.)

and the Hail Mary arrives at Erid and things are super crazy and busy for a good while. Rocky and Adrian reunite and move in next door to where Grace's biodome is being built. and sooner or later, the subject of pebbles comes up. Rocky and Adrian are mutually overjoyed to realize that they're actually on the same page about this!

"But how much do the two of us even know about pebbles, really?" Adrian frets, sitting cuddled up to Rocky in the comfortable little niche of Grace's bedroom built especially for watchers.

"We'll be fine," soothes Rocky, tilting his carapace slightly toward the raised platform where a sleeping Grace is just beginning to wake up. "I know a guy."
