Crystal clear water in Venice was seen flowing for the first time due to a drastic decrease in pollution because of the Nationwide Coronavirus quarantine that was enacted in Italy.

Never in the last 60 years has water been seen so clear and beautiful.

It’s more that the sediment in the water has been allowed to settle out completely for the first time in decades rather then any pollution suddenly dissapearing, if the waters were polluted you’d still be able to see it/smell it. The constant movement of boats and gondolas in the shallow channels constantly churns and resuspends the sediment, something that is quite natural even if it doesn’t look very nice and makes the water very brown. Sediments come in various sizes but sands to clays sometimes take days to weeks to settle to the seabed and that’s finally been allowed to happen!

this is why it shouldnt be called "social distancing" not to be corny but we are closer than ever as a people, we are all facing the same problem (although obvs we all have different means to face it - support the homeless, old, poor, disabled and immunocompromised first, build support networks where capitalism refuses or fails to provide, help each other out) and just bc we shouldnt stand close together does not mean we are distant socially. its the one thing we've got and we have to cling to it even in stupid meaningless shit like terminology.

i wanna propose the term "distance hygiene" as a replacement im not like. a doctor or committee of doctors so maybe theres a reason it shouldnt catch on but like. it's at the very least less sad
