there’s something to me about huntress: year one that feels so quintessentially italian to me i say this as someone who is italian american & has actually read a book of sicilian folktales recorded mostly from woman storytellers

like the complexity of the family dynamics & the exploration of how the gendered violence affects helena & brushes up against her catholic ideals of love is just so real to me. it’s essential to how helena views the structure of the family & a reality that she has to navigate the complexities of. there are both safety & social consequences to speaking up, to fighting back. the line between innocent & guilty is muddy. there are reputations & business connections at play

in terms of her love for tony, helena realizes early on that to wed herself to one man is to wed herself to the violence of his family. as the story goes on, she actively escapes a cycle that the seemingly “decent man” she loves goes on to perpetuate with his marriage of convenience wife

there’s also something to be said about her coming from a rural, isolated setting at the beginning over the story to an urban/centralized area by the end & navigating the power structures at work in the wider world. at first, helena cloaks her resistance in anonymity, and the violence is attributed to a multiplicity of men. they cannot conceive that this is the work of one woman. later, she subverts mandragora’s plot to entice her with a designer dress to a staged death after a party. by enlisting the designer, who contracts with the local authorities, she creates her own costume. helena becomes a force of justice against those who try to discard her for simply claiming her rightful inheritance. she not only evades death, but forges a persona to claim her power

this story is also rife with unsympathetic victims & characters who are both protector & victimizer. this dichotomy is difficult for helena to hold, especially when it comes to her uncle sal. she has to grapple with his role in her self empowerment, how to see herself as well as make herself seen as both a woman protector & a protector of women. she has to live with his disappointment that he couldn’t spare her from carrying out violence, that the cycle continued. some of her greatest allies in the story are murderers & some of her greatest obstacles come to be the crime-fighters in gotham who see her as a naive interloper. in baptizing herself at the end, she affirms the authority of her own life experience & of her faith. in this moment, helena becomes the huntress

overall, huntress: year one is such a beautiful exploration of power, violence, gender, and faith. i’m so grateful for ivory madison for writing it
