luv how male animals gotta fucking dance around and cry and shit for female attention and sex. and then men irl complain about fat women and body hair like get on ur fucking knees and beg me actually
like these tarantulas dude?? the male has to tap out a rhythm she likes and if she doesn’t?? she’ll literally eat him.
Alpha males: "This is nature. You don't see animals acting like queers don't you?"
90% of nature documentaries: "Until now the female has been very impressed by the males drag performance of Orwell's Homage To Catalonia, soundtracked exclusively by Maria Carey songs. A demanding performance like that knows to impress. But... Oh No... One note in the final tune was one cent flat. It doesn't look good for the male now. She is ordering an orbital laser strike to burn his beautifully groomed plumage from space. It will take all year to regrow, effectively ending this one's mating season early. Better luck next time, little guy. Women are a tough audience."

so what do u think about plays
i like how in a theatre time and space are necessarily metaphorical. i don’t like how plays always have to begin with someone walking onstage and talking. too many directors try to work around this by having someone walk onstage and brood in silence for a moment before talking. this is worse.
If you were directing a play, how would it begin?
bagpipes at the back of the auditorium so everyone turns their heads and when they’ve turned back around the play has already begun
the commodification of friendship is the most annoying thing to come out of the internet in ages. like actually i love to break this to you but you're supposed to help your friends move even if it's hard work. or stay up with them when they're sad even if you're gonna lose sleep. you're supposed to listen to their fears and sorrows even if it means your own mind takes on a little bit of that weight. that's how you know that you care. they will drive you to the airport and then you will make them soup when they're sick. you're supposed to make small sacrifices for them and they are supposed to do that for you. and there's actually gonna be rough patches for both of you where the balance will be uneven and you will still be friends and it will not be unhealthy and they will not be abusive. life is not meant to be an endless prioritization of our own comfort if it was we would literally never get anywhere ever. jesus.
the word "difficult" just autocorrected to this right before my eyes i feel like i am undergoing forced glindafication

The problem with wanting to design a villain whose look is military chic but not wanting the result to be too obviously fashy is that basically the entire conceptual space of "military chic but not obviously fash" is occupied by high school marching bands, and you need to decide for yourself whether you're okay with that.
(via op)
"My husband complains about the cold," the man said. "Can you teach me a spell to keep him warm?"
"I can teach you to bind hair into a net to catch heat," the wizard said, "using arcane counting and a pair of fine wands."
After a while, the man said "Isn't this knitting?"
"This, too, is magic."
Really subtle but important detail I loved was that Golden was actually outside of Rumi's range.
Part of why she can't hit the notes quite right (even in the actual official recording!) isn't just her demon side flaring up, it's that she quite literally cannot sing them. They're outside of her range.
Rumi is an Alto trying to force Soprano notes.
She's trying to be something and someone that she isn't because it's who she believes she's "meant" to be, the "right" and "correct" version.
You can hear the strain on her voice. The notes aren't clear. They aren't strong. They squeak and whine. They're blocked in her own throat.
You can hear the difference within the song itself, she's much more comfortable in her lower register.
But What it Sounds Like isn't that.
It's all lower register. It's beautiful and strong and powerful because she's accepted herself completely, including her own limitations.
This is her voice without the lies and it's written into the very music itself.
What?
What gave you the impression she's singing outside her range (which is... Not how vocal ranges work, by definition)? She's just using the higher parts of her head voice, and is struggling because of outside causes.
This is how the VAST majority of women's head voices sound when they're close to hitting the edge of their range. You want a good example of this effect on a woman with a lower range, look at Adele, one of the VERY few true blue altos in a pop scene dominated by second sopranos. And like, Imma be real with you, professional singers don't write music out of their own range. That would be intentionally sabotaging yourself in a very obvious way.
I can kinda tell you haven't been around amateur singers who think they can hit the optional high note of the American National Anthem when they really, really can't. If that sounds a little specific, that's because it is. From personal experience, the adjective is 'screechy', not squeaky.
FR. Put some respect on my girl EJAE’s name.
This is making the rounds again so I just want to clarify my point.
1) First of all, I am an "actual" singer, despite what strangers who know literally nothing about me are saying on this post. I have over two decades of experience, started at four years old, and have been taught by a variety of mentors, including but not restricted to retired opera singers and world-recognised choral leaders.
I have performed primarily in choirs, but also in solo work, including on stage in professional settings that housed over 5,000 audience members. That was fun :)
I'll admit to being around many beautiful and enthusiastic amateur singers -- some of which I had the honour of mentoring myself. Though prev prev's example of the US National Anthem is fairly America centric and indeed doesn't apply to me.
2) Vocal ranges and voice parts (SATB or SMATBB if you want to get real specific) are absolutely used as crucial tools in the singing world?? Personal range and recognised voice parts/division do vary depending on who you are and who taught you and actually very rarely map one-to-one on each other. A singer can absolutely be trained/stretched to a certain extent but human limitation does exist. I'm not about to ask Tito Gobbi to sing The Queen of the Night Aria, because despite being one of the best opera singers in history, he is simply never going to reach that F6. That doesn't make him a bad or incompetent singer.
3) You'll notice I never actually mention EJAE?? Nor I fear did I disrespect her. To me, and to some others I've talked to, I find some of the high notes in Golden a little pitchy. That is actually my free opinion to hold as I may.
I talked about Rumi. The fictional character. I assumed it was a narrative choice. I do love singing, but my primary love has always been media analysis, and to me, given the symbolic and narrative purpose Golden holds (i.e. That it represents Huntrix chasing a goal -- the golden hunmoon -- that ultimately requires supression and distortion of Rumi's true self in order to achieve) that for the high note to be just on the edge of a true alto's range (again I want to reiterate that part division of the scale and personal range are two very different things) was a symbolic gesture written into the music. An easter egg if you will.
It's generally accepted that a written alto part shouldn't really go beyond D5 (using the New Harvard Dictionary of Music as a reference), to allow ease for singers and to ensure that your piece is sung well. Vocal division is primarily used as an organisational, logistical -- and in case of archiving, cataloguing -- tool. It is used to help singers find the right songs, roles, and parts to sing and perform, as well as help composers to write music that can be used universally, and historians and music academics a framework to work off of. There is no inherent moral value or skill judgement connected to it, even if singing culture can escalate to truly toxic levels, particularly for women, depending on whether you are seen as a soprano, an alto, somewhere in between, or indeed beyond (but that's another post entirely).
The first high point of Golden sung by Rumi -- "I'm done hiding, now I'm shining --" is E5, i.e. exactly one note higher than generally recommended range. (The highest part of Rumi's part is actually A6!)
This was just a fun little thought rumination I had about symbolically writing Rumi's journey of self acceptance into the music she's writing in universe.
What It Sounds Like, by contrast, is not only entirely lower register, the division of singing/lines is split more evenly across the three girls (symbolising Rumi's ability to let go of anxiety around needing to lead/being in charge/control) and actually closely mirrors the original Huntresses song from the opening, symbolising her reconnection to her heritage and the original mission/duty.
It is only when Rumi has started her healing journey (and sings lower) that they achieve the iridescent RAINBOW hunmoon, which is coded within the narrative -- though never explicitly stated -- to be an even higher, possibly more secure and sustainable state for the hunmoon to be in, and clearly very desirable and rewarded in narrative.
I understand that people have a lot of attachment to Golden, but in my personal opinion -- and considering my extensive experience in the both fields as a singer and performer, and as a media analyst with a particular focus on the interplay between fiction and reality -- it reads as a song that symbolises the idealistic but ultimately misguided goal typically found in the First Act of a story, only to be challenged, dismantled, and reconstructed to show growth, narrative escalation, and climax in the Third.
I don't think this is a particularly hot or novel take.
In the same way that I do not expect Emilia Clarke to actually be a Mother of Dragons, I don't hold or expect EJAE to be Rumi or share this fictional character's vocal range, or indeed anything else. She is an incredibly accomplished composer, singer, and actor, performing a role.
This was a speculative meta about narrative symbolism, not an indictment of EJAE's IRL capacity as a singer.
