Storyville - Defying the Cutting Season

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been illegal in Tanzania since 1998. But every year thousands of families still plan to have their daughters cut, an ordeal that could cost them their lives. The ‘Cutting Season’ takes place during the December school holidays.

During this time hundreds of girls are saved from FGM by the police, the government and the work of the Safe House. It is run by Rhobi Samwelly, who was herself a victim of FGM, and now, not only does she valiantly run the safe house but she also works with the local police to rescue and protect girls at risk while arresting the parents and cutters.

But they have a tough and dangerous job and old customs die hard. Men believe that girls must be cut to reduce promiscuity and cut girls command twice the bride price in cows as uncut girls. Girls like Rosie, just 12 years old, have had to make the most difficult choices of their young lives - run away from home, not knowing if they will ever see their families again, or submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage.

These brave and courageous young girls are fighting against a tradition that goes back thousands of years. They are standing up for their human rights and fighting for change in their community.

The Safe House is the one safe place they can escape to.

This is horrific. Only thing I disagree with is that its totally fine to circumcise boys against their will. Unless it is medically necessary, it should be their choice. None of this should be happening. Stop forcing people and damaging their bodies so that they will match YOUR ideals for what THEIR body should be.

Ok but as a dysphoric trans man the whole ‘you need dysphoria to be trans’ actually baffles me because even tho I’ve always has crippling dysphoria, it didn’t actually help me figure out my gender at all. I usually dismissed my dysphoria as ‘internalized misogyny’ or just not being feminine enough, which actually just caused me worse dysphoria.

You know what made me figure out that I’m trans though? Gender euphoria. The minute I got called a ‘sir’ is the moment that I realized, “shit this feels right.” And at that point I realized that I could no longer deny the fact that I’m not a woman and that I couldn’t keep living as one.

Here’s a hot take: maybe being trans isn’t so much about how uncomfortable you can be in your AGAB, but rather how much more comfortable you can be.

But seriously, can you imagine coming from a nice date with your girlfriend, you’ve been dating for a couple of months, it’s going pretty well, and her ex is lurking outside her apartment and talking to her cat, which, while annoying is not that weird, and he seems like an ok guy, so you forget about it, and a couple of days later, you’re on a date in a nice restaurant, and the ex turns up looking like absolute shit, dunks himself into a lobster tank, eats a live lobster, and you end up having to carry him out to the hospital where he has a seizure in the MRI and so you send him home but then you get his tests back and it turns out his fucking heart and internal organs are atrophying because of a sentient parasite which your girlfriend manages to separate only the ex runs away and the parasite ends up in your girlfriend who goes to give it back to her ex and then you end up in a weird four way relationship with your girlfriend, her ex, and a symbiote that finds the word parasite offensive

I’m so sorry to steal this post and rant for a second but I juST GOTTA

I’m always so, so happy to come across more evidence of dark!Will - and honestly, I wish they’d kept more of this sort of stuff in the show. The fact that dialogue such as this kept getting removed is the whole reason why there are people out there who always insist that Will was some kind of victim throughout the series.

…When he’s very obviously not. 

Like. He’s more than fully aware of the darkness he’s got inside, and has been for who knows how long. Sure, Hannibal may have ended up becoming his catalyst, but it doesn’t change the fact that Will had the right chemistry for it, and KNEW it all along. Will understood what he was getting into when he started playing his games with Hannibal, and I will not be convinced otherwise. 

And I mean, he certainly gained a level of enjoyment from Hannibal’s ‘therapy’, in letting that darkness roam free. Just look at the whole Mason Verger situation. He straight up told Jack, “When Hannibal tries to kill Mason, I’ll have him arrested, and you’ll have two witnesses.” But that isn’t what happens, is it? Will encourages Hannibal to punish Mason, Hannibal breaks his neck…  And then, what does Will do? Nothing. Absolutely fuck all. Jack does end up hearing about what happened to Mason, but not from Will. He’s so suspicious after the fact, he has to ask Mason if he’d ever met a patient of Hannibal’s, “…a man named Will Graham”, just to figure out what the fuck is going on and see if Will lied to him.

Which he did. Will lied because he didn’t want to tell Jack. He wanted to do bad things to bad people because it makes him feel good. 

Will finally finds a suitable outlet for his darkness through Hannibal: righteous punishment. And I’ll be damned if that can’t be the best feeling to him after 30-some years of holding it all back.
