First Nation shocked by video showing police officers stepping on handcuffed man's back as doctor watches

Coroner's inquest examines how Romeo Wesley, 34, died after being restrained at Cat Lake nursing station

Police officers pepper-sprayed Romeo Wesley, subdued him with a baton, handcuffed him, then stepped on his back and neck with their boots on the night the 34-year-old died at the Health Canada nursing station in Cat Lake First Nation.

At one point, a doctor watches as two Nishnawbe Aski police officers — one who has removed his shirt — press their boots into Wesley’s back as he lies face-down on the floor of the waiting area of the nursing station, kicking his legs.

A security video shown at a coroner’s inquest and obtained by CBC News and other media shows several minutes pass after Wesley stops moving before anyone checks his vital signs.

Police are seen taking photographs of the prone man.  A nurse is visible at various times throughout the 45-minute video mopping the floor around Wesley and offering towels to the police officers after they’d subdued Wesley.

The video, from the nursing station’s security camera, was entered into evidence last week at a coroner’s inquest into Wesley’s death in September 2010.

Okay, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, not all women are negatively affected by porn, either it’s viewing or by taking part. The difference between fetish and felony is consent, always. I think the message we should be spreading is “This particular woman likes this, but most women don’t. Not all women are (directly) affected by restrictions on abortion but they’re still fucking misogynistic. How many women and girls, exactly, have to be raped on-set, or coerced into porn, or victims of revenge porn, or forced or coerced by their boyfriends into ever more painful and degrading sex acts, before we decide this is an actual problem? I can’t think of any feminist issue that directly affects every single woman.

Some women are infertile so I guess abortion isn’t a feminist issue.

Not every woman has to worry about FGM or becoming a child bride.

Women who live in rural areas don’t have to worry about street harassment.

So I guess the conclusion is, let’s not consider anything at all a feminist issue except for our right to “empower” ourselves individually by looking as sexy as possible for men. And that’s the story of how liberal “feminism” was born.

Everyone who uses “believes in sex-based oppression” as a receipt has less than zero compassion for the millions of women trafficked, sold as child brides, suffering from FGM, forced into pregnancy, forced to abort a female fetus, unable to go to school because of their period, left to die from an obstetric fistula, used for birth control experiments, left to sleep in the woods when they bleed, forced into sexual slavery for soldiers, and countless other atrocities.

People who don’t believe in sex based oppression might as well not believe in the sun.

Important thing to remember about intervening in abuse in general. Any actions taken by others to hold the abuser accountable WILL be taken out on the victim and not the person doing the confronting. Do not confront an abuser about their actions unless you know for absolute certain that you can protect their victim from the fallout.

men are much more horrified at women implying men are the perpetrators of most violence against women than they are at the violence itself. the whole time you talk to them about rape or domestic violence against women, you watch as they are quick to explain how men are raped and abused too. when you bring up statistics about how rape victims are mostly women, and most rape perpetrators are men; you will be called a man-hater. just remember that their responses are purposefully designed to silence the epidemic of male-on-female violence, in order to perpetuate the misogyny. to perpetuate patriarchy. remember that.

Why I save my energy and don’t obsess over debating everybody to side with us.

The point is not to get every woman to agree with us. There were women who disagreed with both first wave feminism and second wave feminism but thanks to feminist due diligence, feminist legal and cultural changes still occurred that changed the lives of ALL women and girls (and male people indirectly) regardless.

If you were a woman against women’s right to vote, women’s right to higher education (esp. in male-dominated fields of study and work), women having child custody, women being able to divorce men, women owning and selling property, the battered women’s movement and the women’s self-defense movement, the feminist cultural revolution, abortion rights and birth control, women in “men’s clothing”, etc it didn’t change the fact that because of first wave and second wave feminism, women and girls (including the anti-feminist ones) still had those rights and opportunities earned for them by feminists and that parts of the legal and cultural landscape changed for ALL female people (and male people indirectly) because of feminism.

The endgoals of these forms of activism – including radical feminism, is not small scale, individualistic, and temporary, but for having large scale influence and implementation with long lasting, and permanent effects on the society as a whole.

This is the reason why we don’t need every individual woman to agree with us because our main point is about ADVANCING AND LIBERATING female people as a sex-caste or sex-class/collectively oppressed group on the basis of biological sex, which involves changing the social structure at large and ending the oppressive institutions, practices, and systems intrinsic to it. 

Not every woman, man, and child needs to agree with us on radical feminist beliefs and objectives in order for us to change the society they’re living in. We just need enough movement resources, cultural and legal influence, coordination, endurance, and momentum (and yeah, the numbers would be real nice too but that’s not the point).

I really needed this reminder today. Sometimes, its hard being a radical feminist because we are so often positioned as the bad guys (as TERFS) and worse, its so often fellow women who lead the charge against us without an understanding of what we are fighting for, or who we are fighting for. Its easy to get angry and defensive, to waver in our convictions or to feel like you are pushing a boulder up a mountain. Remembering what the women who came before us achieved and exactly what radical feminism is trying to achieve is so important, so helpful. Thank you for this.
