Yeah
SoS character analysis
So , yeah. I've been a fan of Silent Salt Cookie ever since I stepped foot in this fandom. When he released, I fell in love with his character, and I feel like a lot of people feel the same even now. I've always wondered what made him so different somehow. Here's my attempts at analysing him. But yeah, those are mostly disconnected ramblings.
First, we'll take a look at how he was perceived.
Most cookies, mainly those he protected, respected and admired for his selflessness. Some, according to Charcoal, even viewed him as a god. Many, interestingly, feared him as well, or were at least intimidated by him. They were thankful, but they didn't quite understand him, not enough not to be manipulated into distrusting him at the end.
A lot of people, especially among tyrants, seemed to hate him and his knights, for it is impossible to fight for the oppressed without the opressors viewing you as an ennemy. These cookies hated him, and basically wanted him and his knights dead.
His knights, who knew him best, trusted him with their lives. They admired him, but did'nt fear him. They, more importantly, understood him, knew of the weight of his burdens and his love for cookiekind. Even after their death, and his corruption, they still supported him, because of how much they loved him.
Overall, despite most people assuming he was the most loved among the emissaries, it was only true for those close to him, as there were many who wanted his head too, for something he was basically always doing. So yeah, I don't think he was as revered as it might come accross.
Next, his goals.
Naturally, his duty is to spread solidarity across the world. According to his dialogue in episode twelve, it seems his biggest dream was to make sure everyone would be safe and free no matter who they were. Solidarity was his virtue, and he was the one who would make this dream come true.
He wanted to fight for this dream. He wanted people to understand that, if they were all united, if they all helped eachother, no one would need to suffer alone. To the point where he did'nt care what happened to him. He was created for this purpose, and he got close enough to the people he was supposed to protect that he genuenly wanted them to live the best life they could, in the end.
But a part of his goals we often ignore is to be found in his fears, or what hints we get of them.
From what we can see, he feared not being enough. It seems to me that, because of how much responsability he had, he thought of himself and the virtues quite strictly. He doesn't seem to trust their, or his ability to keep protecting the world -hence why he formated the silver tree plan, wich originally was going to redistribute their strenght to anyone.
The interesting thing here is that Salt, even before anything bad happened, did'nt trust himself. Not with his power, or with the future of Cookiekind. Barely with his own, too. Because of how much responsability he put on his shoulders, he blamed himself for everything that could ever go wrong. So, he wanted to put that responsability, these powers away from himself.
He's got a strange relationship to power, too.
He wanted everyone to have equal power, according to his dialogue. But at least to me, it seems at though there might be something deeper than this. In SSc's voice line, we can find evidence of his distaste for his own strenght, and power in general. While his pre corrupt and his post corrupt self are largely different, his general belief system appears to stay the same.
The way I interpret it, he may believe himself and even the other emissaries to be threats due to their vast powers, and thus hold them to higher standarts. It would make sense, since he is no stranger to how people in position of great powers tend to become corrupted and forsake everything in the name of their own person. His biggest fear is to give in, to become tainted himself, to the point that he straight up tells his knights that part of their duty is to slay him, if he ever becomes as such.
To the point where, after he does give in his own emotions, he forsakes himself and even starts planning for his own death.
In general, most of Salt's flaws as the SoS are mostly spawned out of his desire to protect Cookieking. He wants to protect them with his strenght, but this very power he has makes him a threat to it as well, making him distrust his own capacities and eventually hate himself. It also spawns this objectification of himself and the other virtues in his head, this refusal to view himself as more than a ticking bomb or a miracle machine. Because if he did, that would mean that he too had desires he could give into. So he, ironically, denies himself solidarity, and rejects his own personhood.
All of this brings us an interesting question ; why is he the way he is, then ? Eternal Sugar Cookie cared as much about Cookies as he did. Mystic Flour Cookie, too had individuals (Cloud Haetae Cookie and their mother) she trusted, and who trusted her. Shadow Milk Cookie was no stranger to hatred and lonelyness. Burning Spice loved his civilasitions, too, before they all crumbled. They all held, in a way, the same love, the same duties, the same despair.
So why was he the one to punish himself and them so thoroughfully ? Why did he completely forsake himself, when everyone else accepted their new selves or missions at least somewhat ?
If I had to take a crack at it, I'd say it's a combination of intense self loathing, trust issues directed at his own person, and overall the strict standarts he held himself to. He didn't end up like esc or mfc because he no longer trusted himself to uphold his duties, he did'nt end like bsc or smc because he didn't believe he hated himself too much to believe he too deserved a fufilling life.
Then the question is about these strict standarts in question ; where do they come from ? Why did he embrace these responsabilities and allow them to break his own life down so much more than the rest of the virtues ? Did something happen to him before his corruption ?
Well, I guess we may never know.
Anyways.
Here's a bunch of quite interesting facts about him I managed to compile while re reading his episodes ;
He canonically talks to his horse
His plan about the silver tree was apparantly made after the witches disapeared, and near the other Virtues's disapearances.
just like White Lily Cookie, he has a tendency to disapear and appear randomly without warning.
At some point, he talks about how in the past, he and the cookies of the barren did the impossible (whatever this means). Interesting how he groups himself with other cookies here.
He came to search for the Virtues after they vanished, but they hid away from him, perhaps because of the weight of his expectations.
I'll make a part two about Silent Salt cookie after his corruption, eventually.
I like thinking about how Silent Salt views the other beasts a lot, and one particular detail that's really interesting to me is how the way Silent Salt finds out about the other beasts' corruption affects his view of them.
Because he doesn't find out from the beasts themselves, he finds out because Elder Faerie tells him, and it's the way Elder Faerie words it that I think is really important.
He tells Silent Salt that the other emissaries HID from him. This makes it seem like, to Salt, that his inability to contact the others wasn't due to a lack of effort, but because the others didn't want to be found. They didn't want Salt to know they had corrupted because they KNEW he'd try to stop them. They would rather hide from him, leave him feeling lost and alone, than take accountability for their actions. And this revelation comes RIGHT after the cookies of the Great Barren betrayed the knights and then, instead of taking accountability, blamed Silent Salt for it.
And it's even worse because, as we see earlier in the story, before corrupting Salt is very much a believer in atoning for mistakes and moving forward.
If the other emissaries had reached out to him for help at ANY point before, whether it be before or after they corrupted, he knows he almost definitely would've tried to help them. He would've tried to understand, to help them move forward past their mistakes. But no, the beasts didn't do that, they held not even a single shred of doubt, so confident in their destructive ways that they'd rather hide from Salt than accept that they might be on the wrong path.
To Salt, this shows that the others have made their choice, that they don't want to get better, and they don't want his understanding. At this point he's so furious and hurt and tired that he doesn't think any of the beasts deserve to be helped anyways, himself included.
And the most interesting part of all of this is that, since we're only TOLD that the beasts hid from Silent Salt and not SHOWN if that was their true intent, it's completely up to interpretation if the beasts were ACTUALLY trying to hide from him or if this conclusion that he reached was just a fabrication of his mind, spiraling after everything he went through.
Personally I see it as the beasts avoiding Salt because they knew he'd get in the way of their individual plans but likely not to the same extreme that Salt seems to believe
Personally I don't thing the Beast consously chose to avoid Silent Salt, but being the self centered individuals that they are, simply didn't consider him or really even eachother important in their own goals.
The Beasts corrupted because all of them were left in silence, all of them were isolated and had no freedom of their own. Which might have been helped if they simply just took refuge with eachother instead of thier own twisted virtues. Solidarity was the key to it all, but since Silent Salt fails to see himself and the other Beasts as people, his Solidarity fell short on them and inturn himself.
Salt is being 100% reasonable, its just unfortunate that he never got to be in solidarity with the cookies he is closely related to.
Silent salt lol
whatever, bombing you with big Doey pack and leaving for another two weeks or so✌
Doey vs Prototype sketch comic under the cut
(Warning: this is incomplete)
at first I wanted to draw a wholesome interaction in a similar style to moominvalley, since I think herald and fount's relationship would be quite similar to moomin and snufkin's in some ways (I'm not gonna elaborate on that)
but then I remembered that trees are supposed to have shadows, and the style went out the window.
also, I put this aside like 3 times, so you can see full illustrations transitioning into a comic
it's not finished and I was kinda hesitating to upload this bc of the sudden change in the artstyle, the weird angles and the childish chatter were pissing me off, but I already did it.
the next part would be fount (still unbothered by herald's presence) explaining how children's books not only can contain political ideology but also show a lot about the author's mindset
(I think none of the virtues actually understood how common cookies saw the world, because they never had the opportunity to be in their shoes. so that's why they never undestood their needs and desires)
then herald would tease him bc 'trying to learn about cookies through books is so him'.
He playfuly threatens to eat the cake— finally managing to get Fount to put the book aside, and they'll end up eating the cake together while cuddling
(Meanwhile sugar of happiness would realise she maybe didn't send the best cookie to convince fount to get his ass off there, but at least she has a nice sight.
And flour of volition...
she'd probably be high in the background)
An unpopular opinion: but I do somewhat condone the accidental explosion of the safe haven because the poor children were suffering so much there and making so many agonizing sounds and groans; they would most likely have starved to death. I think they found peace by dying from the explosives but I still feel very bad for Doey and the children :((
I think there’s something super interesting in the ideas of personhood in Segyein society in Alien Stage. From what we can see, Segyein seem to be a multispecies multiplanet society. Among them, there seems to be a broad range of life spans and intellects. Whereas the term Segyein seems to connote a “person” alien in their society, the term “Wagyein” seems to connote a “non-person” alien. In the case of the creatures shown in Round 3 that like, live in the walls, it seems at first like Wagyein is just functionally “animal.”
These creatures are shown to basically be guard dogs, and Ivan interacts with them in a manner that suggests this as well. However, Till’s guitar, Freddie, is also referred to as a Wagyein, and while he is like. Literally a guitar. He is also referred to as a father (I can’t remember where that was, but if anyone finds it please send it my way!) So Freddie is like. Fully a sentient being who could be considered a person. Except, that in Segyein society, the term used for him is the exact same one as the one used for these more animal like creatures.
In terms of humans in series then, I think it’s REALLT interesting considering that they are “non-people” in the perspective of the Segyein. We know that there aren’t a ton of Segyein who speak human languages, but some, like Luka, can. There’s also in universe interviews conducted in which both the Segyein interviewer and the human interviewee understand each other, so there is some sort of shared language abilities. Humans also seem to read Segyein writing (which is literally just the English alphabet lol). The human cast function both as idols and as pets in the series, and this line is very blurry both with their guardians but also with fans. The idea that Ivan may have a “type” is something his Segyein fans are interested in, which is either implying they have an interest in his love life as viewers, or that the idea of Segyein fans having “crushes” on their favorite idols is something normal.
Regardless, I think it’s kind of interesting in that whatever is required for acceptance into personhood in Segyein society, it has nothing to do with sentience or the ability to intelligently communicate. I suspect it may have at least something to do with lifespan, since the short lifespans of humans in comparison gets brought up a lot, and there seems to be a hierarchy among Segyein based on which species live longer, but regardless, the humans in series cannot negotiate their own personhood on the basis of things we might expect them to be able to. Segyein society fully accepts and acknowledges underclasses made up of sentient, intelligent beings that can communicate with them, regardless of if they are a human or a Wegyein, and these lives are allowed to be taken with ease. Human death is a complete non-issue it seems, but even Wagyein death (Freddie) gets brushed off pretty easily.
A a stupid not-so-canon lil comics. Inspired by arena pre-battle quotes.

FUCK i love tragic shadowsalt oh my GOD
the dynamic is so perfect i can't even. salt is hopelessly in love and adores fount in an untouchable, worshipping way where he never actually acknowledges fount as more then an object of his desire and his freedom from internalized homophobia. fount hates and loves and loathes salt and idolizes him in the same way but he wishes salt would be ripped apart by the wolves that are the public and he wants salt to bleed out there in the tatters of his valor but at the same time he wants to nurse salt back to health and be nursed back to health and he wants to have a friend to hate the public with but he so craves that friend's untimely demise.
Ooo, Never thought of this take on ShadowSalt!
I personally try to keep them more canon adjacent:
Lord Commander deeply appreciates Fount but overlooks his issues/lack of freedom and subconsciously objectifies him alongside the other emissaries
Fount is quite jealous but admires him and supresses his feelings due to not understanding them and knows the Salt will never see him as anything more than a coworker.
I tend to have ShadowSalt grow more and more toxic over time, tragic that if they simply communicated from the start they could've saved each other. But now both have grown so bitter and unstable they are pushing eachother down a dark twisted sprialing path. Although I do like to belive they were both doomed from the start due to them both being created as objects.
ShadowSalt but "onesided" on Salts end instead of Fount's, kinda the opposite to my approch. Ruining eachother all the way from precorruption, Salt being shallowly obsessive and Fount competely torn betwen hating Salt and loving him... very interesting! :D
I wanna practice expressions more, and I wanted to draw White Lily, so I mashed both things together and got this
I wanted to keep the expression’s accurate to White Lilys personality? Not like, accurate to expressions in the crk art style, but more so her personality? I don’t really imagine her normally having big explosive and super emotive facial expressions so I tried sticking to that while still making what’s she’s feeling clear
I’m probably gonna do another of these but with Dark Enchantress cause I wanna compare how I draw the two of them-
Precious time is slipping away even as we speak…
Its took almost two weeks for me cause of exams oh dear
Happy Star Wars Day! I’ve decided to make my Skywalker comic into one easily rebloggable post.
