So apparently round umpty-zillion ofĀ āpeople are killing fandom by not commentingā is going around, and Iāve seen a few posts trashing people for lurking/viewing/reading instead of actively participating.
My journal and my fic has always been a lurker-friendly zone. I think lurkers are great and people can fight me on this. Hereās why:
We all started out as lurkers.Ā Or at least most of us did. Come on. Iām sure some people out there mustāve jumped into fandom with both feet and started writing and commenting right away, and good for you if you did! But I sure didnāt. I lurked for YEARS. And even now, though Iāve been in fandom since before Y2K, whenever I get into a new fandom or a new social media platform, I still lurk. I hang out around the fringes for awhile to get a feeling for the place before starting to participate. Back in the mailing list/bulletin board days, it was usually recommended that people do that on purpose, watch and listen and learn the local lingo and social rules before diving in. So you know what? You are not doing anything wrong and you are not doing anything that most of the people you see out there commenting and creating and reccing things havenāt done themselves.
We all have lurker days, weeks, months ā¦. Nobody is 100%Ā āonā all the time. Participating in fandom (commenting, reccing, creating content, and so forth) is WORK. It may be fun work, but it still takes effort! Even if youāre sometimes very active in fandom, then youāll have life fall on your head or the brain weasels flare up, and you wonāt have the time and energy to give. Donāt feel guilty about not being able to give fandom your extra spoons. No one in fandom has a right toĀ demandĀ a single spoon from you that you donāt want to give.
Some of todayās lurkers may be your friends tomorrow.Ā How do I know this? Because Iāve made friends with some of them myself! Iāve had people delurk in my comments to say hi after YEARS of reading my fanfic without saying a word. Which I am totally okay with, by the way. And some of these people are good friends today.
So, in conclusion:
It is okay to feel too shy to come out of lurkerhood in fandom until you feel more comfortable there. It is fine, in fact, if you never do.
It is okay to be too busy and have too few spoons to comment or create stuff. You still have a perfect right to be in fandom and read and reblog whatever you want.
It is okay if you meant to comment on that fic or go back and press the kudos button but never got around to it.
It is okay if you have too many accounts already and donāt want to create a new one just to comment/participate on a social media platform.Ā
It is okay if your personal situation (a stalker ex, controlling parents) makes it unsafe for you to create an account or comment on things.
It is okay if you canāt or donāt want toĀ comment or do any of the other things that constitute non-lurkerhood, and you donāt owe anyone an explanation for why.
This post is a good way to balance a lot of the āCOMMENT ON FIC COMMENT COMMENT COMMENTā stuff that I post here. Content creators will always be happy to receive comments, and comments do in fact breed more content butā¦ sometimes you canāt, and you arenāt obligated to. Itās fine to passively enjoy content for whatever reason.

I'm excited to announce that I have signed a book deal with Del Rey at Penguin Random House in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK for my debut novel, Alchemised, a standalone dark fantasy set in a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy, in which a healer with amnesia is taken as a prisoner of war and must fight to protect her lost memories and the secrets hidden among them.Ā It will grapple with themes of trauma and survival, legacy, and the way that love can drive one to extreme darkness,Ā and it is, as you may be able to tell, a reimagined version of Manacled.
I know Iāve been rather quiet about my publishing journey, and a lot of that has been because I didnāt want to spark any concerns or worry that I might be abruptly taking away a story that is such a deep part of myself and that I know has meant so much to so many people. This process has unfolded very slowly and quietly because I have tried to be mindful as I could be in every step of the way.Ā
As most of you know, I have been a reader in fandom long before I ever began to write. Fanfiction is incredibly special to me, and I have tried to do my best not to undermine its legal protection or allow my works to do so either. During the last several years, there has been a growing issue with illegal sales of Manacled, putting both me and the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely in legal jeopardy.Ā
After consulting with the OTW as well as other lawyers, it has grown clear that as a transformative writer I have limited options in protecting my stories from this kind of exploitation, but I wasnāt sure what to do; I didnāt want to just take the story down, in part because I worried that might only exacerbate the issue, but I didnāt know what other options I had. Then I suddenly had this idea of alchemy, which was peculiarly appropriate; an academic world filled with unique transmutational abilities, and a necromantic war against people who had discovered the secrets of immortality, and I could see a path to reimagining the story while still holding on to as much of the original spirit of Manacled as possible.Ā
I began redrafting the concept privately around Christmas 2022, and then as if the universe had aligned, just as I was finishing, Caitlin Mahony and Rivka Bergman of WME reached out to me and were delightfully enthusiastic about concepts and ideas for my new alchemical world and the ways I had reimagined the story.Ā
I'm thrilled to be working with Emily Archbold, my visionary editor at Del Rey, along with Rebecca Hilsdon at Michael Joseph in the UK, to polish this novel for publication in Fall 2025. I feel uniquely privileged that both my publishing teams are familiar with Manacled and understand how special it is to so many people, and how important it is that this reimagining captures the same spirit while also having its own wings.Ā
Manacled is not going anywhere at present. It will remain online throughout 2024,Ā at which point it will, if youāll pardon the pun, alchemise for 2025 and be removed from AO3.Ā

Bittersweet
We all know honey gets sweeter when you stir it up, but can you make it bitter too? What happens when we give you a fluff prompt but ask you to give us angst? We get bittersweet jily, addictive and delicious. Oh and how about when you turn our angsty prompt into sweet nothings and sugar coated love declarations? Absolute delight! Come ask for your prompt and twist it to your flavour
The participants will be given a fluff prompt which should be interpreted as angst. And vice versa. Hi so Besides Ginny, do you have any other favorite Weasley?
I could write a love letter to every single Weasley. Not just a crappy little āI Heart Youā Valentineā a full-on, Darcy-worthy, three-page letter in calligraphy with a wax seal fastening the back.
Even Percy. I also owe him an apology because I keep cutting his best lines in my WIP.
However, about fifteen minutes ago I fell into another subtle Molly-bashing fic. Sheās on my mind this morning, so let me throw some love her way.
If you start to think about it, the Weasley kids are accomplished. Smart, funny, capable. Also, consider that none of them (save the twins, but thatās an entirely different subject) have the same interests, the same passions, the same temperament. That doesnāt happen in spite of parenting, it happens because of it. Despite the fanon idea that Molly Weasley is controlling, the fact that her children follow their passions, are brave enough to forge their way forward (and yet, still visit all the time) would seem to indicate that Molly Weasley allows her children the room to grow, discover and be themselves.
She does, though, have boundaries and they tend to revolve around safety. Not a woman who is freaking out about every scraped knee, though. Sheās got perspective: hereās a woman who lost her two brothers in a war ā her concept of loss is not theoretical, she knows it, she lives it ā there are Gideon and Fabian shaped holes in her family, and if she pushes back on the idea of her teenagers being in a war, or doesnāt want them listening to Order meetings, thatās why.
The saddest thing (and most unappreciated) about motherhood is if you do it right, your kids are independent, strong, responsible and they donāt need you anymore. Good grief, the whole job is to make yourself redundant in the end. Sheās done that. Her kids take for granted her way of providing safety: home, hearth, a good meal, a laugh, a shelter in a storm.
And thatās okay ā itās the way itās supposed to be.
Except for Harry. Here comes this kid who needs Molly Weasleyās particular kind of love language so desperately- he recognizes it for love, he sees its value. At a time in her life when her kids are pulling away ā as they are supposed to ā in comes a kid who needs a Molly Weasley in his life. What her kids see as fussing or hovering, Harry sees as love.
Harryās as much a gift to Molly as she is to him. Harry gives Molly an āI see you, I value you, what you do and how you do it is important.ā He doesnāt even have to say it, he just thrives under her care, she can see. Of course sheās going to stuff him full of treacle tart, made especially because he likes it.
