Greetings! You can call me Vesey (they/them). You may recognize me from my other blogs, @hickorytwist or @gravelgrowl or @bookgilled. I am an artist and writer who has been into Warriors for a very long time. Here is where you will find my passion project, a rewrite of the series known as “Where The Wild Cats Roam”!
The whole thing is still very much a work in progress, and I’m not sure if it will ever be “finished”, but here’s some things to expect:
- new lore, clan cultures, legends, religions, etc.
- overhauled characters and arcs, including some that are brand new
- main themes: community, culture, challenging status quo in an unjust society, and breaking the cycle— of abuse, bigotry, war, etc.
- a story that takes place entirely in the UK— from England to Wales to Scotland
- some fantasy (and cultural) elements inspired by Celtic mythos
- slightly more advanced cat society with interactions from other species
- influence from other Rewrite projects (that will be credited where possible!)
- potential written prose and reimagined character designs
The ask box is always open unless stated otherwise. Questions are highly encouraged! <3
Sorry about my radio silence here. Still working on this, just been busy and I am trying to pull myself over a roadblock in development. I still have all asks here saved and I am determined to get to all of them one way or another. Thanks for sticking around if youre still following <3
I am choosing (Star) Ripplingriver, aka Riverstar in the canon series.
Ripplingriver starts their life out as a pet (named Blue), living in the quaint little village in the countryside where our original territories will come to be. They are mellow with a good touch of curiosity, spending their youth out in the surrounding nature and basking in the sun.
From early on they get to know a group of local village cats who do just about the same. With no defining laws, leader, or any particular guidance besides a belief in peace and respect for the nature around them, they were rather different than the clans that come to be. Members simply came and went. Their only routine was meditation at sunrise and sunset. Blue and their friends know of the strays and loners that wander beyond the village and are not afraid to offer them places to stay either.
These were the first Riverwhims.
Although they had no leader, a wise cat named Arc was considered a strong influence on the group and took Blue under his wing. Arc had strong feelings about keeping the group together at any cost. So, when twolegs tear down the park in the village to make way for construction, Blue is the one that finds the river island and Arc is the one that gives the group a name. While Arc refused to outright take control, he convinced his companions to take the Riverwhims as seriously as their life in the village, if not more. Blue wasn’t so sure.
Blue’s welcoming nature makes them a popular cat and a common source of guidance. When Arc is tragically killed in a flood, many look to Blue, while others leave altogether. In turn, Blue cautiously steps up to the plate.
About a year later, the Riverwhims stayed strong. In honor of an idea Arc had before his passing, the cats take on new names to separate their time at the river from the village, which eventually becomes the format that all the clans use. Blue renames themselves Ripplingriver.
When the mountain travelers come to the country, Ripplingriver tries to remain friendly with them… at a distance. However, their chaos is stronger than Ripplingriver’s will to mind their own business, and they eventually get swept up into it all. Ripplingriver and their group disapprove of a lot of the things the others try to do, especially following the official formation of the clans and what it leads to.
They try to hold peace for as long as they can, serving as a mediator at plenty of Gatherings. They die of old age, but some say it was stress.
Star Ripplingriver is honored greatly, but their intentions with the Riverwhims were quickly lost to time. The third leader of the clan, Star Willowdrop (granddaughter of Ripplingriver), forms the Riverwhim Royal Family to “preserve” their reputation. It backfires and the Royals aren’t dismantled until the era of Star Ospreypounce (aka Leopardstar).
A dark grey classic tabby with white spotting and blind blue eyes.
In WTWCR, there are six cats in the POT/OOTS prophecies, not four. They are…
BUCKBLAZE — a Riverwhim healer. Representative of the Living Realm. (Lionblaze in canon.)
JUNIPERTHORN — a Heathermoor tunneler. Representative of the Starry Heath. (Jayfeather in canon.)
IVYPOOL — a Stormgrove scout. Representative of the Starless Forest.
HOLLYLEAF — a Stormgrove sept. Representative of the Realm Inbetween.
DOVEWING — a Stormgrove healer-turned-Shadowmire othervoiced. Representative of the Fae Realm.
SOL — an ex-Boulderheart sept and loner. Representative of the Old Gods.
JUNIPERTHORN (born “Jay”) is one out of three children that comes from a relationship between Leafpool, Crowfeather, and Mothwing. To hide their betrayal of the code, the three lovers each take a kit back to their respective clan; Buck and Jay are claimed to be abandoned by the barn cats, Holly is claimed to be left by the loch to a dying mother. She is raised by Squirrelflight. Jay is raised by Crowfeather and Nightcloud, alongside Breeze. Buck is raised by Icewing.
As a kit, everyone in the Heathermoors fretted over little Jay. Crowfeather was a common worrier, something that manifested as overprotectiveness and control of her and little attention on Breeze. Nightcloud loved her children equally, critical of her mate’s approach. Breeze was a common defender, close to both his mother and sibling. This was all very annoying to Jay. As their parents’ relationship became increasingly strained, Jay and Breeze stayed close.
It wasn’t long before Jay began to experience strange things. Dreams of unknown smells and sounds filled his sleep. He talked to cats in the clan no one else seemed to know. Crowfeather believed it to be an overactive imagination; Nightcloud was convinced it was more. Seer Kestrelflight soon caught on as well. But Jay didn’t want to be any sort of Apothecary, and Breeze was furiously defensive of her dream to become a sept.
So become a sept she did; Paw Jay loved every second of training. Her, Paw Breeze, and Paw Heather stuck together like glue. She continued to hear the mysterious whispers of spirits around her, finding them much more bothersome than anything. Kestrelflight encouraged her to keep them updated on what she experienced, but Paw Jay was convinced the Stars had picked the wrong cat.
About halfway through her apprenticeship, things began to change. Crowfeather was harsh on his kits, causing both to become angry and argumentative. Paw Jay dedicated as much time away from camp as she could to avoid it all. This is how she stumbled into the tunnels and caverns below the territories, meeting Paw Holly of Stormgrove and an ancient being called Bogach. For a while the tunnels served as an escape from life’s conflicts, and Bogach became a secondary mentor to Jay.
Besides Paw Heather and Holly using it to meet in private, and Heather’s visits eventually revealing themselves to her father, Star Wheatwhisker, Paw Jay soon realized that Bogach and her experience with spirits was connected. She finally accepted her powers. And with that, Bogach gave her a gift; the Elk’s Prong.
Paw Jay also uses this to get closer to Kestrelflight, sometimes attending half moon meetings as well. This is where she meets Paw Buck of the Riverwhims.
Time passes, Paw Jay becomes Jaystorm. Paw Breeze becomes Breezehowl, Paw Heather becomes Heatherbloom. With the rediscovery of what’s underground, the tunneling role within the Heathermoors is brought back full swing. Jaystorm becomes its director of sorts, begrudgingly, to protect Bogach’s existence. She finds herself caught in the middle of many things.
One night, when visiting the Moonpool alone with the Elk’s Prong in paw, Jaystorm accidentally drops it into the depths. Frantic, she plunges in after it, and emerges somewhere… different. She gets the sense that she is still by the loch, but a deep feeling tells her something has changed. So she goes exploring. She then meets Half Moon. Not sure what to make of a bewildering situation, Jaystorm introduces herself as a loner named Juniper.
When she returns to the present, Bogach hints at what has happened, but does not tell Jaystorm what to do. She continues travelling back through the Moonpool to visit Half Moon and an ancient group called the Kith. She discovers that the Stars first became worshipped through the Kith, and that the Kith would eventually become the clans. So, she helps them reach the mountains and continue the cycle, falling in love with Half Moon along the way, and realizing things she has denied about herself all her life are true.
Through her journeys, Jaystorm becomes Juniperthorn and begins presenting as a molly.
She also realizes that she is part of a major prophecy involving all the clans, and must represent the Stars in a great change to come. She accepts her place in the grand scheme of things, yet she becomes notably bitter, exhausted from the constant control of her life’s direction. She stops visiting Bogach and returns the Elk’s Prong to the loch.
ask game for people who have a lot of OCs: send this person a letter of the alphabet and they'll talk about a character whose name starts with that letter
(pro tip: be sure to send an ask to the person you reblog this from!)
A mysterious old badger with a pelt speckled from star-like flecks of white.
Long ago, all animals on the Isle shared a common belief in a Pantheon of Gods. Each God was a different species that lived thousands of cycles (years) before their recognizable kin, blessed with great powers to aid those still thriving in the land of the living. They had their own Realm, separate from that of the Fae or the Spirits. The Gods had knowledge of everyone and everything— what was to come, what has since passed, and what always will be.
Every now and then, when a Living creature was found to be utmost devout and worthy, they would be blessed with divine knowledge and immortality; these beings came to be known as Starspeakers. Midnight, the Badger of the Sea, is one of the most well-known Starspeakers and with good reason. It is said she has learned every animal’s language, that she has walked every path of faith, traveled to every corner of the Isle. No one knows how old she is, and some claim that she has forgotten as well.
Midnight was taken in by wildcats as a cub. It is said that something terrible happened to her parents and her sett soon after she was born. Some even claim whatever it was involved the wildcats, and their guilt drove them to save her. No matter the cause, she was raised by the distant ancestors of the clans, and it ended up guiding her life onto a unique path.
She grew up knowing wildcat religion, tradition, and speak. She knew from the start that she was different from them, and she became restless. Bitter. Soon enough she met other badgers and decided to live with them, learning their own language and culture. She was welcomed and her stay with them was a great relief; however, she still felt disconnected.
Midnight went to a shrine and prayed to the Gods for answers. In return, the God Drantaigh gave her a mission— she must travel the Isle and learn from all the animals, seek out all the Gods. And so she did.
Her quest lasted her a lifetime. As she breathed her final breath, Drantaigh did not return. Instead, Leumnach and his legion of Spirit cats appeared and blessed her with the role of Starspeaker. Midnight was devout, but her blessing was unexpected and gifted from a God in which she did not dedicate her worship— in fact, it was well known that Leumnach had betrayed the peace within the Pantheon. She was to guide the wildcats in their place. Without the right to die or the watchful eye of the other Gods, the now-immortal mustelid was left to live for eternity.
As time went on, Midnight distanced herself more and more from the cats and Leumnach. They knew of her, and she knew of them, and she refused to meddle with their paths. However, it became clear to her that they were now forever intertwined, as visions of clans and kiths and great strife clouded her mind. So in the rare occasions she was sought out still, she kept things vague.
The clans were formed, so was the Starry Heath (StarClan). Wildcats were relying less and less on the old Gods, but the connection between them and Midnight had not been fully severed. So, while she did help the cats, she began to meddle.
Midnight has a complicated relationship with the clans as they stand. She has purposefully interfered at times, seemingly frustrated by the cards she was given, but she also wants them to move forward for the better. She wants the old Gods to return and the clans to reconnect with the nature around them. The future after the Starless (Dark Forest) battle is unclear, even for her.
(By the way I will be attempting to answer the previous character asks sent here in March, which I am very very grateful for and I sincerely apologize for not getting to until now! The depths of my answers will vary but I hope what I say is interesting nonetheless.)
