Return of the Demon King (2020)
There’s going to be another animated Monkey King! Journey to the West: Return of the Demon King | 西游记之再世妖王, slated for a 2020 release. Based on the description, it’s an international co-production (so we may be looking at a release outside of China too!), and boasts having the “edgiest” Sun Wukong ever.
Judging from the trailer, it’s definitely taking place on the journey west and living baby fruit are going to be a thing. That’s all I can tell at the moment, but the animation looks excellent, and Sun Wukong himself…
Looks like a lovechild of 15 and 17 omg.
Believe it or not, this movie has no affiliation with the company behind Monkey King: Hero is Back (2015), but as you can see, the Monkey King design is strangely similar. I’m a bit wary of the copied design, but at the same time, if they’re looking to appeal to 15′s furry demographic, then whoever decided to do this is very smart, and probably can do no wrong from here on out.
Regardless, let’s give this the benefit of the doubt until more info about it comes out. For now, the pros are: gorgeous animation, a great action teaser, Wukong’s eyeliner, which can give 17!Wukong a run for his money:
Cons are: never forget how hard godhunter played all of us. A good trailer doesn’t always promise a complete or good product. Not sure how “edgy” Wukong will be or whether or not this is a good thing. But still, The Demons Strike Back (2017) promised edgy pilgrims too and we got a group of punk nerds in a rare case where the edge worked out.
Hopefully, this turns out to be good! At first, I was disappointed that this wasn’t associated with Hero is Back, but after seeing the trailer, I got pretty hyped for whatever this turns out to be! Can’t wait for #20 to join the canon line of Wukongs!
