i'm the kind of arsehole to do this but not enough of an arsehole to do this under someone else's post. so here we go.

potting this at the top before we begin: i am nonbinary, i am an anarcha-feminist, and i disagree with both trans-inclusive and trans-exclusionary radical feminism on a number of points.

the "there is nothing radical about trans exclusion" posts are funny and cool and basically fine and i do kinda like them but they do misunderstand what radical feminism actually is, equating "radicalism" to communism or anarchism or whatever. but this is kinda wrong: radical feminism was its own movement within feminism, that was radically feminist, rather than feminist and radical.

so like, there are different forms of feminism: liberal feminism, for example, which advocates for women's electoral inclusion, comprehensive sexual assault laws, access to abortion, equal representation, no-fault divorce, &c. (broadly good things that we should be in favour of); or marxist feminism, which sees women as a form of economic class and advocates for the abolition of gendered labour; or even futurist and fascist feminisms which are a whole can of contradictory worms. feminist politics is so large and contradictory that basically it can be summed up as "any politics which holds the interests of women at its centre", and then any definitions collapse when you try to get more specific.

and then you have radical feminism, which emerges during the sexual revolution and argues that the main axis of oppression in society is patriarchy and therefore that the domination of men over women is the oppression that all other oppressions are built on top of. this follows that to end oppression, we must destroy gender norms.

which sounds more or less fine (apart from all the inherent racism and western-centric-ness), until you ask about things like sex work (radical feminists are often very against sex work, viewing it as categorically a form of sexual assault - which is obviously false) or pornography (for similar reasons theyre against it), and it gets a bit more, uh... yikesy (not that it wasn't already). im skipping over about 50 years of debate here.

or like, trans women: what are they? are they women like any others who should be included in our feminism, as some radical feminists believed, or people who reinforce gender roles by transitioning? couple that with the fact that many trans women have had to work in the sex industry in order to survive and hoo boy it looks like we've got an extremely toxic debate on our hands!

and so the radical feminists split into two camps: the trans inclusive ones, who were normal on trans stuff but weird about everything else (such as that time when Andrea Dworkin wrote in a weirdly erotic way about genociding Palestinians and then also worked with the far right in an attempt to ban pornography), and the Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists, who turned into the fascist weirdos we all know and love today.

personally (as an anarchist feminist), i have mixed feelings about radical feminism, as while the racism is awful, Andrea Dworkin's bloodlust for Palestinians is evil,* and the anti-sex work and anti-pornography stances are horrid, the movement did evolve out of the same movement that mine did. when i read McKinnon, Dworkin, or Wittig, I see glimmers of Voltairine de Cleyre's essay Sex Slavery, or Emma Goldman's Marriage and Love. and thats an uncomfortable connection. moreover, i agree with McKinnon (who is trans-inclusive) when she says that sexual harassment is a form of institutional discrimination; less so when she says that sex work is inherently nonconsensual.

this post doesn't really go beyond this point, but when i see people talking about "re-radicalising feminism", they clearly don't know what the term "radical feminist" means. they just think it means feminists who are radicals, rather than referring to a specific movement in feminist history.

and maybe thats a thing we should be aware of.

I look at feminism through a philosophical lens.

If a woman does not know that she is supposed* to have human rights, and hence doesn't mind being oppressed, how good is it to introduce feminism to her? Assuming:

a) she is unable to leave the oppressive environment

b) she doesn't want liberation

Ironically, most women in this age, fit into either of these categories, sometimes both.

*And according to whom? Why should people have rights? Nature never cared about ideology or laws.

personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist

waaaay back when I was a cashier in retail we would talk about dumb shit while unloading the truck, and we got to the "what would you do in a zombie apocalypse" me and another worker were like yeah we would just die. End it all, we can't fight or run or shit. I refuse to put that much effort into survival.

And my manager was like no!!!! If that happened, I would drive to find you guys in my truck and we could eat stuff from my wife's garden and I would make sure everyone I know survived!! I would carry you all on my shoulders away from the zombies!!
