Love that while online fandom in general is having a weird meltdown about the morality of enjoying anything darker than sanitized fluff in fiction, the Danny Phantom fandom is still sitting in the corner 16 years after the show ended with a blankie and cocoa and their 10,000th deep-fanon supertorture cannibalism vivisection psychological horror fic
Actually, I think it's important to know the Danny Phantom fandom did have a problem with what we would now call 'Antis', in 2007-2009. They were led by the owner and admin of a major fan forum, and her most frequent targets were anyone who shipped queer pairings. (This was primarily m/m fics, the trans!headcanons had yet to be a major thing and f/f and polyship fics were almost nonexistant.) She was at least casually supported in this cause by Butch Hartman, as she was also the admin for his official forums, and actively thought she was doing this to his wishes. (Likelyhood: 90%, BH is an ass. But I never saw proof he knew the extent she took it to.
The Phandom has survived in spite of all this, and Butch Hartman, and it's actively a part of why it still embraces all the 'darker' sides, because we learned.
Everyone who supported her left, after one too many arguments over it all.
Every time I see an anti-shipper, I raise my eyebrows. Because it didn't, with this woman, start with queer pairings - for her it started with adult/child pairings, and others. But it very quickly became -No, we can't let the kids ship Dash/Danny! We can't let them even *contemplate* Paulina/Sam! No, Danielle isn't trans, why would you think that?? We have to protect the kids, or else they'll think being queer is okay!
Modern Phandom will embrace your right to write anything you throw at them, because they've already seen where it ends - and they're here in spite of that.
For the record, my commentary above is the reason why that if you are a person who starts talking about 'problematic ships' and you're in my fandom spaces, I'm blocking you.
Especially if you find the 'ships' problematic but are A-okay with all levels of gore and violence towards the very same characters. Sure, Jan.
This started off as tags but, you know what? It's important to the Phandom as a whole because this is a problem with Phandom that we should look at critically.

Musings on Vlad Masters.
People who object to trans people being in fantasy are wild. As though some silly-hatted alchemist wouldn't simply invent Almazar's Gender Fluid in an afternoon and distribute it to every dungeon chest in the land. It's Common on the loot table and half the goblins drop it. You can brew it yourself with three mushrooms and eight snail shells. It sells for 1 copper at the merchant because the supply is so abundant. You fool. You melon. You absolute buffoon. The limits of what you are willing to imagine are an epitaph you wrote for your own freedom.

Fandom PSAs
Dont’ Like, Don’t Read
or DL; DR
You are responsible for curating your own online experience.
If something upsets you, makes you angry or queasy or triggers you, stop reading/looking at it. Avoid things that might make you feel that way.
Learn to use the Sort and Filter function on AO3, especially the Exclude tools.
On social media, block and mute accounts / tags / words when necessary.
If you hated something, you don’t need to tell that to the creator or start pointing fingers at them publicly.
The Back button is free. Use it.
Addendum:
Yes, for this to work, creators need to tag their works accordingly, so that people know what sort of content they are about to engage with and can nope out if necessary.
I will probably make another PSA about the importance of proper tagging later.
Ship And Let Ship
or SALS
You are allowed to ship whatever you want.
Everyone else is also allowed to ship whatever they want.
You are entitled to dislike or even hate a ship. If you want to do this online, in public, don’t use the ship tags for hate posts.
If you see someone posting about a ship they like and you don’t, there is no need for you to start arguing with them in their replies / comments / QRTs / reblogs. Don’t throw your hate in their face.
Do not harass fan creators or fans for shipping something you disapprove.
All of this also applies to liking / disliking an individual character.
Addendum:
”I agree with this, except when…”
No, then you are NOT agreeing with this.
Let me make this VERY clear. There are NO exceptions. None.
You don’t EVER harass real people over pixels.
If you disagree with this, kindly block and move on.
Your Kink Is Not My Kink
or YKINMK / YKINMKATO
The longer version is ”Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That’s Okay”.
People have different tastes. Not everything is for everybody.
Even if you don’t like a specific kink, other people are still allowed to use it in their creations.
You are entitled to dislike kinky content and think that it’s ”weird”.
Don’t kink shame or judge people based on their kinks.
This goes both ways: your kink is not someone else’s kink, so don’t push it onto those who are not into it.
Be Kind
or Don’t Be An Asshole
Focus on the things you like instead of the things you hate.
Create and unite instead of destroying and dividing.
Don’t harass real people over fictional things.
Stop stirring up petty drama just to get some attention on social media.
Stop trying to ”win”. Fandom is not a competition.
Remember that your own experiences aren’t universally shared. Your perception of things can differ from someone else’s, but that doesn’t mean either of you is necessarily wrong.
My boundaries guide and govern my behaviour and only my behaviour. The moment i try to use my boundaries or triggers to restrict the behaviour of others, I’m attempting to control people, and that’s not a boundary thing. People who use boundary and trigger language to attempt to control and restrict others should be checked, because that’s an inaccurate use of those concepts. Attempts to control people in this way comes from the abuse playbook, though people who attempt to use their own boundaries to control and restrict you often claim you are being abusive to them by not catering to their boundaries and triggers, but that’s just a form of DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender). I am not entitled to control you.
The only people who are in a position to set rules to control behaviour on a platform are the people who are ultimately responsible for the space you’re in, like AO3 administrators, and they make the requirements clear. Other users of sites like AO3 demanding that you behave in certain ways because of their own boundaries and preferences are way out of their lane, and you have to wonder why they feel entitled to behave that way.
it's true and you should say it.
coming out of the tags to say that some of us have been saying this for years and have been called all manner of degenerates, perverts, and pedophiles over it, and we really deserve an apology we will never receive
We DO deserve a fucking apology we'll never get, and not to soapbox, but lemme just throw out another fucking explanation of exactly why this shit keeps happening in the slim chance that it helps at least one person not fall for it: Fascism in ANY form will ALWAYS present itself as reasonable to YOUR sensibilities. It preys on a lot of things, your disgust reaction, your fear reaction, your own shame, your need for a tribe, your need to feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself, your need to protect your resources, your need to boost your own ego, your need to feel better than others, and in my opinion, the worst thing of all that it can prey on is your WANT TO DO GOOD. It turns that Want To Do Good against you, gives you "acceptable targets" and sets you loose, thinking that you're being a fucking super hero. Fascism will ALWAYS feel okay when you're doing it because you understand why you're doing it because you've been told why you should be doing it by someone who's fucked the narrative to make you feel good about hurting other people because they've convinced you that you are protecting people by doing it!! Fascism tells you: "The sort of people who value a sex scene in a movie are perverts, and perverts are dangerous, right? Oh god... What if they're a rapist and that's why they like that sort of stuff? Yeah, that trans girl that made that post about movies needing sex scenes... She pisses in a diaper, that's fucking disgusting right? And she likes weird fiction... And diapers are meant for kids... So... Yeah... Exactly, you got it! See you figured out what she was too! So you should trust your gut with these people, you're really good at spotting them! You know when someone is evil! And you DEFINITELY should not listen to a pervert explain themselves, because... Right, exactly, what's the point? They're just going to lie about it and probably say gross shit to you." Did you catch how that worked? It let YOU make the conclusion. It let YOU answer the questions and start setting shit in stone in your own mind. And the next thing you know, you're using fiction as proof, anything outside of your own comfort levels as evidence, you've become an emotionally reactionary fascist who genuinely believes you are making the world better, and safer, for the people you love, and who love you in return. Fascism doesn't begin with violence, it begins with a kind hand held out in your direction from someone else who believes they're helping. You might not even realize you've fucked up. Ever. That's how it works. That's how it thrives.
THIS!!!
Degenerate art - Wikipedia
If we don’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanlore’s relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
It's really fucked up when you treat characters like people and people like characters.
No seriously it's REALLY fucked up when you treat characters as if they were real live people while you treat people like they're just characters.
I'm gonna go ahead and repeat: it is super, duper, extra scooper fucked up when you treat a character as if it were a living person while treating other human beings who are interacting with you like they are merely characters who can be written out of your personal story if you just find a remark mean enough.
You. You get it.
ETA wait why does this have 18k notes
[TN: This is a translation of this note by Maromi. If you are able, I encourage you to read the original article for yourself as translation
I have never read a more excellent article
This is a great take and I would like to adopt “Feelings Yakuza” in English actually, I feel like it conveys the whole thing way more obviously than “anti” (not to mention the muddled meaning of “proshipper”).
To avoid harassment, EA and SEA artists have started pre-emptively blocking users with "proship DNI" or any variation thereof in their profiles as a result of this article and said feelings yakuza are getting pissed that their DNIs are being hard enforced by the other side. How very dare.
I’m screaming with laughter at the actual Japanese term, o-kimochi yakuza. The “o” is an honorific indicator to indicate how prissy and self-important these people are being.
I don't know if Maromi intended this to be the incredible takedown that it is, but I couldn't not share it:
A New History of Fandom Purges
On November 24th, 2018, I posted a list of major deletions of sites or of content on sites that stripped fandom of its history. A bunch of pro-shipper blogs had just been deleted, and people were nervous. I suppose I was thinking “All this has happened before…”
On December 3rd, 2018, Tumblr’s Department of Irony announced the NSFW ban. Thanks for providing this salutary lesson to The Youth and a billion reblogs to me, I guess.
Today, we have AO3 for writing. Audio, images, and video are in as much danger as ever, yet fans attack AO3 every donation drive. For those of you who forget our past…

This is only a small taste of the many times that:
Fannish moderators got bored, ran out of money, or had a falling out, deleting a site/list/forum along the way.
Sites got bought out and closed for being unprofitable.
Fandom got hit as governments targeted piracy or political dissidents.
Fans grudge reported each other.
Official forums got deleted when the canon finished.
It’s not always malicious. It’s not always about us. But we lose every time.
Some of these purges hit everyone. Many of them hit m/m content specifically or female gaze-y material in general. This is why antis are dead wrong. This is why anti-fujoshi policies end up being anti-m/m policies. This is why we need clear labeling, not content restrictions.
This is why we need AO3.
And it’s why we need a solution for audio, visuals, and video too.
So grateful for the historical memory and the long view on a phenomenon many of us have come to late, and/or take for granted.
And this is why AO3 generates twice its goal amount in just a few days: they are irreplaceable.
Friendly reminder that the resounding refrain through all of these purges was a condescending, “If you don’t like it, go make your own site.”
AO3 IS THAT SITE AND IT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.
Goodness. I didn’t realize how much this was still circulating!
#op has an extensive list (2nd person pov there!!!! i was there for that rip)#but it cuts off at 2020 when the xz fans imploded + mass reported fics to the (chinese) government for lgbtq content -> govt ban on ao3#truly a disgraceful moment lol
The original post is from October 15, 2019. I have no doubt that we could fill in every year since then with more of this same bullshit. It never lets up.
On the war of attrition side, some Spanish language sites have disappeared for tired moderator reasons. That one SGA archive never did come back either, did it? On the snitches side, fans continue to grudge report each other, whether that’s low stakes like tumblr or the Chinese government continuing to go after original danmei.
Truly, in making an illustrative but non-exaustive list, one is spoiled for choice.
#i honestly can’t wait until ao3 can implement multimedia content#not that a ao3 like solution wouldn’t work i just think with the excess money ao3 makes they can handle it financially
My off-the-cuff guess is that OTW needs to bring in about 10x as much money before any serious audio or image hosting will be an option. Maybe someone with more technical chops can weigh in, but I don’t think the average user understands just how insanely much money hosting actually takes.
Hi, I’m a digital visual media artist as well as an author! If you didn’t know, even small image files are orders of magnitude larger than a decently sized text file.
so you know how there are literally thousands of fics being hosted on AO3 right now? imagine that maybe pieces of art also. imagine AO3 having to quadruple their operating budget just to even begin.
if you want someplace to host fan art that is literally geared toward fandom, try squidge
not to make posts that are going to get me anon hate, but I am fucking begging people to stop calling fictional characters "minors." can we please go back to talking about fictional characters as children or teenagers. please.
first of all, "minor" is a word that has a meaning and that meaning isn't necessarily "children in the general sense." it is in fact a really specific legal term. it is a status that grants a group of vulnerable people protection by the law. so, as fake people who don't exist and therefore have zero protections by law, a fictional character cannot be a minor. a fictional character is fictional.
Also, in the sense of those real-world protection laws, sure, it makes sense to group together newborns through 18-year-olds. but doing so is genuinely completely fucking useless when talking about a narrative. "This is a story where the main character is a minor!!!!" you could be talking about Bluey you could be talking about The Catcher In The Rye you could be talking about Yellow Jackets. I don't know how else to express that story about a 7-year-old, a story about a 12-year-old, and a story about a 17-year-old are are, structurally, completely different things despite all being about "minors," and how grouping them together makes no sense. it's reductive at best and destructive at worse. Imagining sitting down and being like "oh yeah, let's look for a story about minors to recommend to minors" and you hand children's picture book No, David! to a high school senior.
what bullshit scare tactic language. "yikes, you're shipping minors" and the ship is two 17-year-olds who the narrative treats as active parts of the story who make their own decisions and have their own desires. when did we all agree to start talking like this and can we stop. just fucking tell me if a character is a child or a teenager.

i feel like people forget that sometimes characters in fic are written like that because it's a reflection of real life.
people have sex without setting boundaries. people have unprotected sex without talking about their sexual histories or producing recent sti tests. people play with kink without discussing it ahead of time or establishing a safeword. they have anal without 'enough' prep or lube—they may even prefer it like that.
and none of this is really a fantasy. it's all pretty normal. you can feel that it's inappropriately normalised, and you'd probably be right! but it is normalised: one study found that 58% of female undergraduate students on the campus studied had been choked during sex. 20% of those students said that they'd never been asked if it was ok; another 30% said they'd only sometimes been asked if they consented. fully half! (non-paywalled journal article on choking during sex here, including these numbers.) despite a rise in stis of all sorts, condom use is declining. (pdf link to the full text of this study about declining condom use in the us; aidsmap article about an australian study with similar results.)
even when people do talk about things—sex or anything else—they communicate imperfectly. 'yeah, but don't go too far' is consenting and setting a boundary, and also relying that the person you're talking to has the same metric for 'too far' that you do. for some people, 'the trash needs to go out' is a neutral, factual observation; for others, it's a request that the person they're speaking to take out the trash.
even when people understand each other perfectly, people react unpredictably to things sometimes! we behave irrationally! people laugh uncontrollably at funerals, or get angry at the straw that broke their back rather than the enormous load they were already carrying. they get scared and lash out at people trying to help them. when hurt, most people do not instinctively reach for therapy-approved grounding exercises and 'i feel' statements.
pretty much any bad choice that characters could conceivably make is a choice that people make in real life, on purpose, all the time. people do things that can have catastrophic, life-changing effects because it felt like a good idea at the time, or they're leaning into the vibe, or they just didn't think about it all that much, or an infinite number of other reasons.
fiction isn't intended as a guide on the best, safest, and most responsible ways to live your life, and fanfic isn't any different. it's not a narrative flaw to let characters do things that are messy or harmful or downright stupid—it's a reflection of what people are actually like, and not something that authors should feel they have to apologise for.
i am obsessed, in the most derogatory way possible, with the people in the notes who are reading this post and then saying, well, those stats you're pointing at are why you have to make it clear in fiction that they've had a conversation about Consent And Safety. if you don't tell people to use condoms, if you don't tell people that it's not ok to choke someone without prior consent, if you don't tell people that they have to do these things Correctly, you're part of the problem.
so i will say it again: fiction is a reflection of life, but it is not real life. fiction does not have to set a good example. fiction does not have to be safe, sane, or consensual.
fiction isn't intended as a guide on the best, safest, and most responsible way to live your life. if you read it looking for that, you are the problem.
