Really enjoying love story in the 1970s. The circumstances suck but the lead couple is adorable and also fairly emotionally mature and I’m not worried about them. I just get to have fun rooting for these cute kids.
However. The people around them? Yikes.
I got to the episode where her parents find the marriage contract and it’s was INCREDIBLY frustrating on multiple levels
1) why did the leads keep that thing, it’s evidence! It should have been burned immediately, or better yet, not written down in the first place. For someone in an authoritarian state, I do find Fei Ni shockingly, painfully naive a lot of the time
2) even if it was okay to have, her parents wouldnt have found it to be upset over, if they had not BARGED INTO THIER HOUSE WHEN THEY WERENT HOME AND TORN APART THIER BEDDING
Like what the hell. I get wanting to gift bedding but that was completely inappropriate. If someone did that to me I’d never speak to them again. Probably

3) even if their concern over the nature of the relationship was justified or any of their business - and yes I understand the political factors here - making such a big fuss the way they did would I think, draw MORE attention to the fact that Something Is Going On. They have a whole freaking family meeting with everyone present and they ambush them like a jury and judge the heck out of them.
It’s the way they do it - the only one who seems properly paranoid about noise is the dad, which like, good for him.
But the invasive nature of how they treat them, and the brother and sister in law weighing in to, was so deeply uncomfortable. I was shouting F off at the screen a lot.
Don’t get me wrong. I know some factors here are cultural - but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with it.
Did it force a love confession? Sure. But what a way to do it.
And then later they’re like “well we have to make sure” and it’s like? No? Fuck off? Take them at their word?
It’s also deeply sad that they have a great bond and are building a great relationship and people are viewing it as fake - based one what? It goes unspoken, but the implication is clear - lack of physical matters. And that’s so deeply allo normative it’s just sad.
There as SO many things that make a good marriage besides that. Fei Ni and Fang Muyang have mutual respect and good communication skills and just genuinely enjoy being together and enjoying the little things in life and doing things together - we have clear reasons WHY they care and support each other. It’s so much better than most relationships in media, and I hope we get more of it.
