My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
AMERICANS!!! DO NOT DO THIS TO FLOCK 'SECURITY' CAMERAS. REPOST AND SPREAD THE WORD
do not get IR blocking fabric or thick wool to cover your nose and mouth
do not get IR blocking sunglasses since facial recognition has moved up to targeting and identifying the upper face
do not avoid having your phone or any bluetooth devices around these cameras as they can detect and track those signals
do not buy cheap green lasers 1 milliwatt or above from etsy or walmart or amazon (i will not try and find a link if you ask)
do not use them to fry those fuckers from a distance damage the delicate inner sensors by pointing the beam in the lenses
AND unless you want to cost Flock more money in repairs, do not buy a small circle saw or a reciprocating saw and cut down the pole
OR do not climb said poles, spray paint on the solar panels, cover the lens with paint or a sticker, then use bolt cutters to sever the wires
when doing all these things, DO NOT avoid using latex gloves as fingerprints can leak through
DO NOT USE DEFLOCK TO FIND FLOCK SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS NEAR YOU
remember, flock is for YOUR safety :) even though crime rates have not gone down since they were implemented, they're being abused to track down exes and s/os, and many face pools or houses or schools or gymnasiums! Where there are no liscence plates to be found!
DO NOT DO THESE THINGS and enjoy a life under surveillance!
enjoy living in the country where 87,000 of these cameras were used to track down a woman who got an abortion!
enjoy living in the country where there's no consequences for a flock exec to watch a inside of a gymnastics place without their knowledge!
Remember, this is their American Dream.
EDIT: 53 cities have cancelled contracts with flock and are now turning to Axon, in which πΊ invested 1-5 million dollars earlier this year. Do not limit your focus to one brand.
Good evening friends and enemies, it's time to learn how to source unsourced videos instead of perpetuating the chain of missing attributions that progressively obscure the original source with each repost. π
STEP 1: Take a screencap of the video, preferably while it's playing so that the PLAY button isn't blocking the image.
STEP 2: Reverse image search of choice. To my chagrin, I tend to end up resorting to Google's Search by image because Tineye keeps failing me and I haven't gotten around to doing a deep dive into currently available reverse image search services.
If you use the Firefox desktop web browser (untested: other desktop web browsers, Firefox mobile web browser) you can combine STEP 1 & STEP 2: Feel free to repost the video to Tumblr first, preferably as a draft or private post to prevent people from reblogging the uncredited vid, because this method doesn't work as well on Reddit videos.
Right-Click on the video. In the right-click menu, look for "Image Search Options" and hover over it to bring up a list of search options. I'll have to try out some of the other options later, but for this demonstration I used Google.
The search engine should open in another tab.
STEP 3: The Search. This part will be a mix of luck, tenaciousness, and deductive skills.
For Google, I recommend going to the "Exact matches" tab because it presents matches and their information in a much more condensed format than the other tabs. "Exact matches" is a misnomer, as is apparent in the screencap below. This search actually pulled up images from at least two separate videos by the same woman hanging from the same tree: one where she's wearing a slate grey pencil skirt and blazer (as in the video reposted by OP) and one where she's wearing a pale grey long-sleeved dress.
Ideally, a functional search engine would let you sort results by useful variables such as "date posted". Google is not such a search engine, and with its progressive enshittification you may or may not be able to bully Search by image into limiting results to certain date ranges. Luckily, these videos have been less flagrantly reposted than some, so I didn't have to scroll through too many.
When searching for a source, one of the primary things to pay attention to is date. Obviously, the original source has to be older than any of the reports. Unfortunately, not all the Google results have dates, so the earliest dated video isn't guaranteed to be the original.
In this case, the earliest result was of the grey dress video variant posted on Instagram on Jan 17, 2026. However, upon checking the link it became apparently that the Instagram account was not the originator of the video and their repost was unsourced.
If the date check fails you, keep an eye out for any undated results that clearly stand out from the rest. In this case, I picked up on the following:
Which has the following unique traits:
A new outfit! This is the only result that features the woman in a pale brown blazer and pencil skirt.
Dimensions. This result is 1080 x 1920, while the majority of results were smaller in size. Reposts are more likely to be downscaled from the original than upscaled, so if the initial date-check fails you, you're better off checking the largest undated results first.
Specific username (Liang Li (@liangli521)). A lot of the other results just have captions or titles in various languages. Depending on the website, these are usually either captioned reposts or random search terms that don't even link to the actual video. Results with specific usernames are rarer and thus worth checking out, though some of them may turn out to be reposters.
In this case, I hit the jackpot! There they all were: OP's video, the grey dress video, the brown blazer & skirt video, and many, many more!
Legitimately, Liang Li's whole thing seems to be going ham in skirts, dresses, and frequently heels. Possibly for advertising purposes? Very beautiful. Very powerful.

Three posters with text, made and signed by The Sameer Project and Translating Falasteen. They read:
What this means
Our kitchen closes: At least 3,000 meals a day, feeding up to 9,000 people, not being distributed.
Our water trucks stop: At least 350,000 liters of fresh water a day not being delivered.
Our medical clinics shut down: At least 400 patients not being treated.
Our team pauses: At least 200 ground staff on break without a way to support their families.
[Every 'not' is emphasized in capital letters]
No tents. No tarps. No transport. No medication. No baby formula. Everything people in Gaza rely on to survive is provided by aid organizations, and one by they are having to reduce or pause our operations - because of funding.
[transcriber note: we presume they meant 'one by one']
_
What is our plan?
Our community has always shown up, but relying solely on crowdfunding going into our third year of operations is not sustainable. We need to create more reliable and predictable streams of funding.
We're working on an action kit to share with you this week, so you can be part of the solution.
We're encouraging people to support us on a monthly basis; sign up for this feature on Chuffed.
We are asking our community to recruit monthly donors so we know how much funding we can expect.
Be an active participant in sustainability - consistency is key.
_
More to come.
Pausing for long, stopping distributions, ceasing operations, is not an option.
['is not an option' is emphasized in capital letters]
We need your support to create consistency and predictability in an otherwise unstable situation on the ground.
The genocide is not over - so we need to adapt. Consistency is solidarity.
We will be providing more information this week on how you can make a difference.
['You' is emphasized in capital letters]
For now, please give so we can restart our lifesaving work:

the drama on trans twitter rn is that a trans man has a trans girl oc who doesnt pass and is pre-hrt, and all the twitter tirfs are calling them transphobic and nasty for making a "characature" of a trans woman. this person also has an oc in the same story who is a also a trans woman who passes very well and is very feminine, and its clear the younger trans girl looks up to her, but conveniently everyone ignores this other character who isnt "clocky"
and all I can think is how sorry I feel for pre-hrt or non-passing trans girls who see this drama, see other trans women saying awful things about this character's small hips or her flat chest or broad shoulders or her height. how that makes her a characature and a transphobic hate symbol. and i just feel bad !!!! depictions of trans people who dont pass are important! those people exist and deserve love and representation!!!!
white people please just purchase native artwork and jewelry from native people i keep seeing idiot white people be like βwaaah i wish i could support native creators but its cultural appropriationβ girl why would beaders sell you their earrings then. just dont get a medicine wheel or a thunderbird then like damn it is that easy
If Native folks are making it to sell to white people with the approval of their tribe, itβs not βappropriationββits support and appreciation! So yes, buy that native-made dream catcher, but not the mass produced fakes made by white people. Like, you can go to a pow wow and buy native crafts there, too.
I just have little faith in myself to write a convincing uni environmentβ¦ but I mischaracterized them in the old versionβ¦ but Iβll probably never finish smth like thisβ¦ hh
No i must be strong.. for me and the three other berhelm fans out there
Aww thx but I feel like I made Mark a little too anxiety-ridden in comparison to highlighting his despondency. I was going off of prologue characteristics after all and I like writing as if Iβm in their heads, so focusing on writing him mischaracterized for the duration of the story would leave a weird taste in my mouth
Iβll still keep some of the scenarios but the overarching story will likely have to change lolol
Besides.. getting to write snarky Mark and Uly will be rlly fun methinks
Small AU adjacent comic I made. It takes place during their winter semester (aug-nov) of 2026!
Fun fact: I wrote the entire script for it in one night before going to bed. Took me until now to draw it.
Me YAPPING about specifics under the cut β¬οΈπ
In case anyone is confused, this takes place in my AU (Check the section "THE ACADEMY" HERE).
Eden's garden Academy was Opened by Mr Tozu and Ms. Mara as an experiment, and the class of 16 students start attending in august of 2024.
During their FIRST year, they only take classes with Tozu, Mara and have a VERY OPTIONAL "P.E."- esque class with Damian (you know who he is originally).
When they start their SECOND year at the academy, in august of 2025, as a way to introduce new grounds or more material to their class days at the academy, other teachers who are also ultimates of different areas are invited to teach the basics about these topics to the students.
((This is SUPER inspired by the IB system having different areas of specialization students can pick between, its not all of em but its the idea...))
These new teacher's ultimates are the following:
"The Ultimate CEO" - Teaches them Buissness.
"The Ultimate Engineneer" - Teaches them Mechanics.
"The Ultimate Surgeon" - Teaches them Biology.
"The Ultimate Muralist" - Teaches them Art.
"The Senior Ultimate Historian" - Teaches them History.
(SENIOR ULTIMATES ARE EXPLAINED IN THIS SAME POST ALSO IM SORRY. Theyre people who dont have their titles anymore basically its not that complicated).
I think it's pretty Implied in the comic, but "Miss Ainsworth" Is the biology teacher, she's a medical professional and that's why Jean asked her to teach him how to give injections. But he doesn't take biology class with her, he takes art class with another teacher "Miss Jennifer".
Maybe Ill make a post about these courses cause I like the concept and its quite interesting to think about inside the AU....
Looong list of Berhelm ideas bcus author's a little insane
I followed Ellipsus's Fandom Ship Template for this (ty Ellipsus team <3) and so I'm just dropping my little Berhelm rambles below. I'm planning to use all these details for SoSS rewrite (aka Berhelm non killing game AU but EGA is a real thing)
Most important thing to note is because Berhelm is not in a killing game, their assumed canon dynamic (keeping things strategic, distrusting each other) would be different in this AU. Maybe I'll explore KG Berhelm in another post.
Core Tropes:
β§ Realistically they'd be a slow burn, but since their loneliness has altered what they perceive romantic relationships to be they don't consider themselves as "romantic" even when they're doing all the stereotypical romantic actions. That is until... someone explicitly asks if they're boyfriends and they start reevaluating everything in their relationship before admitting that, yeah, they might as well be. In their opinion though, labels don't really matter.
β§ Mutual pining. They have so many parallels it's impossible for them not to yearn for each other when they're the only people they know that understands what it's like to feel worthless, unloved, and impossibly lonely. They end up wanting to do so many things with each other but find it difficult to communicate it.
Canon Context:
β§ This section is so funny because they don't interact. Like at all. At most Ulysses says Mark's name during Ch.1 trial. What do I do with this information (I will complain and say pjeg writers missed out on a peak dynamic, that's what)
β§ Okay the above point is a lie because Mark does become Ulysses and Wenona's shared maid but I have zero idea what their canon dynamic is beyond that scenario.
β§ So instead. I will go over what this template mentions as "subtext" and "emotional undercurrents" and include their parallels and dynamics here.
Parallels:
Difficult experiences with their health, both likely having bad experiences in the healthcare system and having a (semi-)chronic issue that disrupts their daily life.
Both are severely lonely, and have gotten accustomed to isolating themselves. They both long for affection, but they feel they don't deserve it and/or don't have the time to cultivate proper relationships with people.
Both likely have self-esteem issues. Probably think they're not worth much from an objective standpoint. This connects to their health issues ("why waste time on me when I'm so broken" or smth like that)
(Causing all the above) Neglectful families. Would claim they've never actually felt familial love before. Any family member who "cares" either takes advantage of them and/or leaves them to rot.
Both can be snarky when they want to be. Mark more than Uly, but there's definitely a bunch of things Uly would like to say out loud that he hasn't yet.
Philosophy nerds⦠jokey banter abt reality, society, and the afterlife⦠they find so much joy from this
Dynamics:
Ulysses is terrible at lying and his emotions show easily through his face and voice. Mark, not so much. Cue moments where Mark has enough audacity to do things in front of Uly, who ends up tomato-red each time.
Because of how similar they are, it gets to a point where they can understand each other's thoughts just by looking at their body language. Not fool-proof, but they do have a prominent connection.
Wait I think they'd be codependent in this AU. Oh no. Shit I need to give them other relationships to talk them out of it
Prompts:
Small cw for suggestive mentions, but nothing explicit
β§ Oh god there's so many in here. Holy shit. Should I even be doing this in one sitti
What draws them together? The parallels I mentioned before, also shared interests and the fact that they've consistently shown they care abt each other. Spend enough time with them and they get attached, easily.
What pushes them apart? Their own self-doubt and low self-esteem. And on a physical level, their Ultimate careers send them across the globe.
What are they each afraid of in the relationship? Losing each other, which includes their time and space together. Also the other person getting hurt, especially through something they've done.
How do their strengths or flaws clash or complement?
They partially enable each other's bad habits, but their guilt for making the other person potentially worse causes them to actually take care of themselves, and each other, more. This evolves a bit into codependency but since they're both on their healing journeys their friends have to step in and help them out. They can't do it alone.
Anti-social. They prefer this. No, they will not be participating in spin the bottle. No, they will not be going to a loud-ass carnival where everything rubs them the wrong way. No, don't interrupt while they're in the middle of talking shit about you, can't you see that gossip is the fruit of all social change? Anyways uh. Their extrovert friends have to convince them to go nearly anywhere in public otherwise they'll defend each other's anti-socialness in a pretend mental war.
Ulysses is a lot better with his words than Mark is, but Mark makes up for it with audacity. They stick up for each other when one of them can't communicate properly, and also teach each other how to become more confident in their respective problems.
What's their default mode of interaction?
Early Relationship: Finding a quiet spot and talking shit abt ppl, especially during parties. Eventually evolves into philosophical discussions.
Before they're "Official": Oh my god they will not stop going to each other's dorm rooms. It's like they live together. Their friends have to drag them out literally all the time. While they're there they read certain books or do puzzles while occasionally gossiping or having philosophical debates.
What is their love language?
Both love love love receiving physical touch. They could be working on PDA but they don't go out enough to have that even be a reality. Mark is more initiative, likes hearing Ulysses's noises, especially making him laugh.
Gift giving is a close second. They give each other really meaningful gifts where the other person can only convey their thanks through physical affection.
Ulysses enjoys giving words of affection, but Mark feels bad about not being able to say anything equivalent.
What secrets do they keep from each other (and what does this affect)?
This dynamic is interesting because I feel like they don't need to especially keep things secret (besides their pining for each other) because they're so similar. They can see in the other person that they're not well. They have mutual struggles. It's easy for them to admit to their issues because they're so relatable. This keeps their relationship free of suspicion, but does set them up well for codependency.
Otherwise, they keep their more intimate thoughts a secret from each other for a long while. Stuff like wanting to hold hands, kissing, sex, etc. Interestingly, it's less of fearing what the other's reaction would be and more of the inevitable embarrassment attempting to communicate what they want.
What emotions do they bring out in each other? Sooooo soooo much comfort. Sooo comfortable. Remember how they're in each other's dorm rooms all the time? Damn sleepover environment. Books and stuffies everywhere. At least one puzzle on the floor. Maybe a video game open. Fuck oh my god they're like each other's safe space
How do they change when the other is around? Immediately relaxed, anxiety gone. Kinda like they can be their authentic selves that they never got to show to other people because nobody cared enough about them to bring this side out of theoh my god they're so fucking tragic
Who notices the other first? Who admits to it first (even if only to themselves)? I think it's genuinely at the same time. Mark at the beginning cares about nobody. Ulysses at the beginning is focused too much on scribing. They become mutually interested once their conversations get interesting. That's when they actually "notice" each other for who they are as people. I think it would take Ulysses a bit longer to recognize his feelings as attraction, though.
What would they never admit about each other--even under pressure?
To each other: Listen they get some. Raunchy thoughts sometimes. I do think they would tell each other eventually down the line though and realize their fantasies are Not something to be ashamed of and they're both actually interested in trying them out. Cue better sex lmao
To others: Basically everything unless the other explicitly tells them to. Mark's the best person you wanna tell a secret to (but Ulysses will eventually know about it by proximity so it's not entirely secretive), and Ulysses would never say a secret out loud, though you could probably question him enough and his emotions would reveal the answer.
Who starts an argument? Who ends it? Ulysses would likely bring up a topic that Mark feels more strongly about. Mark usually ends it with a dismissive answer if he thinks Ulysses can't be convinced (cue disgruntled Ulysses⦠hiding behind his notebook⦠cutes)
What's their worst fight like? What hurts the most? Them trying to convince each other they matter while simultaneously denying their own importance. what hurts most is their belief that they're not good enough for each other, that the other deserves someone better, even when they want each other so badly. It is very, very hard for them to start loving themselves, but that will come with self-improvement.
Do they talk things through, or rely on body language, silence, shared rituals? All of the above. I think they're comfortable enough talking to each other to resolve disputes, even if they both get a bit bratty with it. When things get bad or when Mark goes non-verbal, cuddling and gentle displays of affection is the best remedy.
How do they apologize, if at all? Ulysses is more likely to say it out loud, while Mark will probably give a gift. The other would have already forgiven them before the apology, though.
Who's best at reading between the lines? Mark. Even though Ulysses is insightful, he just doesn't have as good of a grasp on modern social cues.
What's the moment they almost say something--but don't? When they had another lovely evening just chatting about their shared interests and they end up lying beside each other, looking into each others eyes while feeling warm inside. They both think that maybe this is the moment where they admit they want something more. But they silence those thoughts in favor of believing that this is enough.
Who's more likely to get jealous (and who hides it better)? Mark. Brooding gator if anyone even tries to flirt with Ulysses, especially because he thinks they're likely just gonna take advantage of him. Surprisingly, Ulysses hides his jealousy better, probably because it comes off more as concern than outright distaste.
What's their emotional "tell" when they're trying not to show emotion? Mark's eyes "darkening" the slightest bit (with negative emotions), and looking away with a slight blush (with positive emotions). Ulysses lifting his notebook, and his brow furrowing.
How do they comfort each other? At first, it's awkward words of comfort, before they end up not talking about the issue and diverting into shared interest territory for a sense of familiarity. Later on, it's physical affection for the win. Many loving hugs and cuddles bundled up somewhere comfy.
What are some weird little rituals that only they do?
Mark helps Ulysses wake up, and Ulysses helps Mark get to sleep.
Those philosophical discussions that devolve into nonsensical debates
Whenever they're quiet and comfortable, they cuddle in a really specific position that just delivers on all their physical wants. Otherwise, they have a really tender makeout session. interestingly, they both find interest in the feeling and/or sounds of kissing each other rather than the idea of kissing alone. They find it pleasant.
What would make them walk away from each other?
Ulysses forgets something really important that Mark told him and now there's a brooding alligator in the corner (the important thing was to work on the unhealthy habit which he did not do)
Mark gives Ulysses "the stare" for whatever reason (probs when he genuinely thinks Ulysses's opinion is bad) and Ulysses is immediately turned off. Not a word from him for the rest of the day.
What misunderstanding could nearly ruin them?
Though they can and do diminish themselves to claim they're not good enough to be the other's partner that doesn't really lead towards relationship-ruining material
Highly unlikely, but if one of them genuinely believes the other doesn't care about them, the same way people in their pasts have communicated to them before. But this would have to happen after they've already established a yearning for each other for it to be relationship-ruining, which I think is a bit unrealistic given all the evidence to the contrary.
If they're separated, what's the thing they each cling to?
Mark: Ulysses's voice. He'll call Ulysses at least once a day. Otherwise, any recordings he has of him, he'll listen to. Ulysses eventually catches on and starts sending voice messages over text
Ulysses: Any gifts Mark gave him. He fears forgetting Mark, so he'll wear a gifted accessory, if he has it, all the time. If not, then tucking something small that reminds him of Mark into his notebook as a bookmark works too.
Whatβs the line of dialogue thatΒ defines their relationship?
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"...For caring."
What do they give up or risk for each other? Based on how they value themselves, they're definitely willing to put themselves down so the other can be better. Would not mind hurting themselves, as long as it's for the sake of the other person.
What would their "final scene" together feel like? (I assumed this is like at the end of a story and not them in their final moments.) Peace. A silence full of hope, instead of soul-crushing hopelessness. The feeling that things will get better. That they're getting better. That they are better. And most of all, that they're not working through it alone.
What's the first thing they notice is missing when the other's gone? Fulfillment. Peace. Comfort.
~~~~~~~~
(Separate section for:) Who would they be in a modern AU?
β§ Assuming ultimates and EGA don't exist: Ulysses is working at a museum, trying to save up enough money to continue his studies. Wants to become a librarian. Becoming more and more hopeless at the state of the world. Mark is. Much worse off. Still actively recovering from his addiction, probably suffering from withdrawals. Keeps relapsing, and his managers won't let up on him if he so much as takes a day off work. Actively considering suicide.
β§ Without uni, it would be very difficult for them to meet. Let's say Mark goes to the museum Ulysses works at at an attempt to clear his head that isn't smoking again. At this point, if he can't find any other option of relief, he's convinced himself he'll die at the end of the week. He meets Ulysses. Uly gives him a free tour (the museum is getting less and less visitors.) Mark feels the most relief he's ever felt in a long, long time. Mark probably gives Ulysses a shit ton of money because why the hell not. Uly tries to refuse but Mark won't let him.
β§ Mark is a frequent museum visitor, going whenever there is a new exhibit just so he can speak to Ulysses again. Other than the museum, they go to libraries and parks. Went to a cat cafe once. Their relationship likely escalates to codependence very easily. Mark keeps working so he can give Ulysses money, so he can have an education and be the person he's dreamed of. Ulysses does whatever he can to make sure Mark is feeling mentally okay. They both essentially become each other's reason for living.
β§ The very moment they realize they're allowed to be in each other's rooms, the affection does not stop. It's a very bittersweet dynamic. They get the person they've always dreamed of, but in a world where they feel nobody else loves them. Spend as much time as they can together. Try to not fall into a cycle of codependency and fail several times.
β§ Realistically they will stay like this unless they decide to seek professional help or someone inserts themselves into their relationship. Or idk, maybe Ulysses will actually go to school instead of convincing himself he's fine where he is and that's where he can meet other perspectives and see his relationship for what it is. I don't think it's a bad ending per se, but it is an icky sort of "better than before".
Thanks for putting up with my Berhelm analyses and thoughts hehehe
I will never get them out of my head will I..? Or maybe I will once I finish SoSS rewrite (which may be never. god)
the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.
