Day and Night

Through the leaf litter I’ll hear him prance,

Hidden just beyond Apollo's blessed light,

Leaping through the forest in the Maenads’ dance.

I’ll hear laughter, wild and free,

Bursting forth from his breast,

As his hooves strike the forest floor,

Joyous, manic, without rest.

Right then, the world falls mute.

From within my breast, rivers of life burst forth,

My breath catches, then comes his echoing flute,

Beckoning me to where I need not question my worth.

The Syrinx sings louder with each passing day,

From where the Wise Oaks whisper ancient truth,

Bearing an invitation to dance amongst the Fae,

From the smiling lips of the Tawny Youth.

And I find The Young Boy,

Who once played in the streams at dawn,

And pranced with joy,

Is Irresistibly beckoned by the Faun.

It's often frustrating when folks who don't know what player-hostile game design is and think "player hostile" simply means "difficult" blunder into discussions of the topic thinking they have any opinion worth listening to, but occasionally it does lead to very entertaining claims about which games are and are not player-hostile in character. I just saw someone cite Portal as an example of player-hostile game design. Like, Portal is extraordinarily player friendly in its design, to the extent of implementing alternative solutions for many puzzles if you somehow manage to render the developer-intended solution impossible, which is much further than even the most accommodating puzzle games typically go. The fact that a mean lesbian makes fun of you if you actually need to use one of those alternative solutions does not make the game player hostile – in fact, for certain audiences I'd argue it does rather the opposite!

Looking to the sun with closed eyes yet the brightness against your lids still brings you to tears. The warmth upon your face that makes your hair almost too hot to touch. An open chest that welcomes love and spills your insides out onto sizzling pavement.

Filled and emptied. Cozy and too hot. Crying because you need to, not because you want to.

The destroyer, and yet the kindest soul. Cutting away limbs to direct your growth toward the light.

It stings, but the pain is what makes the love of Apollo tangible and undeniable.
