Hello, my name is Mahmoud Abu Swierh, a 17-year-old high school student from Gaza. Due to the ongoing genocidal war and the unbearable conditions I am facing, I’ve made the difficult decision to seek safety abroad in order to complete my final year of high school (Tawjihi) and pursue my dreams. 😔

I’ve launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising 15,000 CAD to cover my travel and living expenses for a year. Thanks to your generous support, I’ve already managed to raise enough to cover the travel costs and am now waiting for the border crossing to open. Once it does, I plan to leave immediately. However, I still need to raise an additional 5,000 CAD to reach my goal and cover my remaining expenses.

It was funny to re-read reactions to old post. Am I a ‘scoundrel and thief’ or a 'kind soul’? When posts have little context, it’s easy for people’s perceptions to 'flatten’ the possibilities and organize into good or bad.

As a kid if I lost something I liked to imagine whoever received it had similar level of care. 'You lost something precious, but a tender being took hold of it, and the being treasures it, just like you.’ Quite often things are crushed in the roads nearby. 'I would be sad if I saw it crushed. It’s cute and soft. Looks clean. Let’s take it home.’ That was my thought upon seeing the toy. From my point of view at that moment, it was a good action. To others, it is thievery. It’s fun how perceptions differ so greatly.

(Years ago, I gave the toy to someone precious to me. She loves Pikachu with all of her heart. Also, the toy coincidentally was the same type of Pikachu toy I used to play with when I was little, so I was happy to hear the clear voice it makes when you press its stomach again. My version of the toy had a voice that had gotten so distorted from overuse.)
