Smile at people, thank them sincerely, speak gently, and never act above anyone. Humility is one of the rarest forms of beauty.
When you speak, do so gently and without laughter, humbly and seriously, in few and sensible words, not being noisy in speech…. You should not only have humility in your heart but also make it manifest by your very appearance. - The Rule of St. Benedict, 11th and 12th degrees of humility.

your mom jokes don't work when you know someone too well. I would never be in bed with such a wicked woman. That's not even what I had your mom saying last night. I wouldn't speak to her.
the phrase "a shiny quarter to anyone who can explain this" popped into my head today but i couldn't remember what it was from. after 30 minutes of frantic googling i'm happy to report that it is from Invader Zim production art where johnen and the other artists were bullying eachother via notes on character design revision sheets
obsessed w this fucking tweet

We have this interesting situation where we basically no longer have privacy nor the expectation of privacy, but we also don't have community or meaningful connection with others, so we're all simultaneously both completely exposed and absolutely alone, and please understand that when I say this situation is "interesting", what I in fact mean is that it's "nightmarish and I wish I could wake up"
The polar opposite of corporate accounts trying to come across as hip and super friendly are the ones for libraries, aquariums, parks systems and the like, that are basically just trying to get people excited about learning and the wonder of history/science by posting things like this:
You know how much I would lose my mind if I was at an aquarium and turned a corner to see a wild ass heron staring at a fish tank
“Kids shouldn’t have to know about that.”
Okay so actually letting a serious topic be vague and confusing is much more scary for a child than explaining it in calm language they can understand.
When you are in a safe place, explain the serious topic in a way the child can understand.
The fire alarm went off at school today because of a mistake, but your teachers did the right thing to take you outside to be sure it was safe.
Some people use wheelchairs because their legs don’t walk very well. It can happen because they are old and tired, or because they got hurt, or because they were born that way.
Your Uncle Jerod talked to mom and dad, and wants you to call her Aunt Kari now. We will call her Kari too, and we can all practice together if it takes some getting used to.
Anticipate age-appropriate fears the child might have so you can assuage those that are not a threat.
Yes, Kitty died at the vet, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not safe for Puppy to go to the vet.
Yes, Peyton and Jo are getting a divorce, but they are both still part of our family and love you very much.
Yes, Grandma has cancer, but cancer is not contagious, so you are not going to get cancer by visiting her.
Anticipate fears that are realistic, and give the child clear direction about what to do, and what happens next.
If someone asks you to get in their car without permission, find Mom, Mama, or a teacher and tell them right away. We will make sure you are safe.
If Sparky’s sickness makes him hurt very badly, we are going to take him to the vet and she will give him some medicine, and he will die, but then he won’t hurt any more. Because Sparky is very sick, we are going to spend some special time with him over the next few days.
If the fire alarm goes off at school again, follow the teacher’s directions. If the fire alarm goes off and you are somewhere alone, go outside, and ask a grownup to call 911.
Reassure the child that they’re safe and loved, validate their feelings, and see if they have follow-up questions. Give them the option to take space to process, or to stay near you to feel safe.
I’m sad about Sparky too. Do you think we could make his favorite peanut-butter treats, while we are spending special time with him?
I understand why Grandma’s cancer makes you feel angry. It doesn’t seem fair that people we love get sick. Would you like a hug?
You were worried about calling 911 if there’s not a grownup around. I wrote down some important things, like our address, and we can go over these together so you are ready if anything like that ever happens.
These things are principally the job of the child’s parent or guardian, but in some cases directing the child to that caregiver is difficult or impossible (parent refuses/confuses the child, parent is absent, child’s questions are specific and relevant to a situation their parent was not present for, etc.) so I think all adults should be prepared to have these conversations with kids.
guy on a work call just accidentally said “have a nice freak-end” instead of weekend and now i desperately want that to be the new meme. have a nice freakend everybody
“fits like a glove” as if a glove has ever fucking actually fit
You used to be able to get gloves made to measure for your own hands, which would fit ✨perfectly✨
That’s a lot harder to find nowadays, which is a shame.
Having gloves that properly fit you is a surprisingly great feeling!
It is possible to tailor them or make your own if you’re crafty and want to give sewing or leatherwork a try
While I made my pattern to measure, that wasn't actually the case with historical leather gloves! They were manufactured in standard sizes (whether in factories or as a cottage industry) but the leather was VERY stretchy, and you could use glove stretching tools to expand parts of the fingers when necessary.
More in this post.
I think I had more trouble fitting my pattern because the modern leather I'm using is not necessarily meant for gloves, and the various hides have different and unpredictable levels of stretch. It's also thicker than most of the antique gloves I've seen, which would make it less stretchy.
Plus, I'm still relatively new at it, so I am not as familiar with the various nuances of stretch direction on a hide as someone who makes hundreds of gloves for a living would be.
