I think a lot of white people in liberal & leftist spaces really need to realize that often by trying to discuss how race complicates matters to show they totally get it, they’re really just otherizing people of color and really obviously just performing a part to overcompensate.

The most immediate (recent) example that comes to mind is a case where a mother was caught on camera severely abusing her child, and white people really thought they were being antiracist by being like ‘oh this is culturally normal for black Americans, she shouldn’t have her children taken away for this, they’re destroying black families’ and black people saying ‘no this level of violence definitely isn’t culturally accepted’ and expressing discomfort with white people trying to frame it like it was, especially when they were trying to talk about how abused white kids are already granted a higher level of personhood and their suffering is more immediately recognized

A large part of the issue comes from white people just kind of echoing back what they’ve heard without having the understanding it takes to really navigate these issues, but it gets bad real fast. Like in the above case it’s literally just ‘unlike us white people, they just don’t know better because of their inferior culture’ but wrapped in nicer language which is... very different than what the discussion is when people of color are discussing the specific ways abuse is normalized in our cultures

if you really want to know what caused all the instability & growth of extremist groups I suggest you take a look at the US foreign policy towards Afghanistan during the 80′s

It’s interesting to note that when the communist government came to power in Afghanistan in the late 70′s, one of the first things they did was declare equality of the sexes, made education for girls mandatory, & banned child marriages. The conservative tribal leaders who the US armed & funded (& who later became the Taliban) declared this to be a “war on Islam” & fought against the central government.

The US had no problem back then with encouraging the growth of Islamic conservatism to counter socialism/communism. You created your biggest enemy & you have no one to blame but yourselves.

I think about my ancestors all the time.
