i’m very glad people are able to get vaccinated and it’s not americans’ fault the us government is bad and trying to block smaller countries from making their own vaccines sans patent and more people being vaccinated is a good thing etc, but i would be lying if some small part of me did not get a bit irritated with the cutesy american ‘hahaha which one did you get’ culture. i just….. cries in less than 3% of our population being vaccinated

nope 🙃 a bunch of vaccines have been ordered, but canada isn’t allowed/able to make its own vaccines like the US, so we have to order them from other countries that can. oftentimes shipments get delayed and we can’t do anything about it, leading to regular shortages. but some of it is our government’s fault too- it’s harder to develop drugs here because there’s a lot of red tape around it, a lot of the vaccine rollout is up to provincial governments (and alberta’s provincial government is literally every flavour of terrible you can imagine). as a result, in most places you can pretty much only get your first shot if you’re over 55 or have an underlying medical condition. not only that, but the government has decided to delay giving people their second shots until everyone has had their first shot, meaning a lot of people probably won’t get vaccinated until at least the end of the year. that leads to about 2.5% of the population being fully vaccinated, a number that’s below the global average and isn’t likely going to change any time soon. fun!

so, about 80 low-income countries (who are much harder hit than canada, let me be clear- i’m just talking about my own personal experiences here, but it’s worse in a lot of other places) have been fighting to try to waive patent rights for the COVID vaccines, which would basically mean that those countries would be allowed to produce their own versions of the mrna vaccines from companies like pfizer and moderna without a patent. a bunch of EU countries and the US, as well as britain and switzerland have been blocking them from doing that, though, because it’s a threat to profit basically. because making money is more important than saving lives i guess. again, canada isn’t the hardest hit by this, many other countries have it much worse. but countries that don’t have patents to produce the mainstream vaccines have to rely on ordering them from other countries, which is a whole shitshow
