sakura sees her husband again less than twelve hours after he left earlier that day. he returns the lunchbox and sits on their bed and sakura raises an eyebrow at him, entirely unsure of why he’s there right now.

“i forgot something,” he explains.

“what is it?”

“i needed to tell you something earlier.” he stands so he might be in front of her.

she perks up and nods, worried. details of his mission? something he found out about those clones? something about sarada?

“i love you.”

sakura blinks. she pauses to process his words and when she decides she heard him correctly, she frowns. “what?”

sasuke looks amused. “i love you,” he says once more in the privacy of their bedroom. he doesn’t say those words that often and he’ll only really ever say them when they’re alone, but sasuke manages them now. sakura just looks so confused though, so he leans in, wrapping his arm around her like she’d maybe hoped for earlier, and repeats the sentiment.

one day fugaku comes across his son at the village gate saying goodbye to his girlfriend. or, if he recalls correctly, not his girlfriend because no, sasuke denied, flushed and frantic, sakura isn’t my girlfriend, shut the hell up, shisui you prick, we’re just friends. fugaku smiles softly when sasuke hands her the bento he’d prepared for her and when she waits a few more beats, leaning in a bit closer than earlier, sasuke just wishes her luck with her mission and literally pushes her away so she would go on.

fugaku notes the disappointment on her face that sasuke misses as he turns on his heel, his ears practically glowing red.

“sasuke,” he calls.

his son stops and seems surprised to see him. “father,” he greets, walking to his side so they can go home together.

“was that sakura i just saw?”
