Each Hashira’s Relationship with Gender
Another random character ramble LETS GOOO
Assuming a world wherein the Master is tolerant of trans people (I can’t imagine him not being so), and a world wherein such people are known (but likely shunned), here’s my take on each Hashira’s relationship with their gender.
Tengen (He/any)
Never outwardly had a problem with his gender. Because he disowned his clan, he wouldn’t have that conservative familial pressure.
Is confident in his masculinity regardless of presentation.
Gyomei (He/him)
I’m gonna make a lot of enemies here. But. This guy is transphobic!!!!!!!
I see Gyomei as being a strong leader but also very close-minded. He supports those who had a struggle AND overcame it, not those who are still trying to find themselves. For example, he has a soft spot for Tanjiro because he is very down to earth and has the instinctual reaction to put others before himself because of his kind upbringing.
HOWEVER
A character like Genya, who Gyomei dislikes…. Genya acts out because he doesn’t know any better. He doesn’t want to be bad, he was just taught some cruel lessons about survival of the fittest. Gyomei, however, refused to guide him until he started to figure things out himself.
Gyomei would expect you to figure your issues out yourself. He is a monk, after all, believing that the body is a burden meant to be trained (hence his intense, self-injuring Hashira training exercises.
He never felt the need to worry about gender. It’s arbitrary, and being bothered by things such as pronouns is foolish.
Muichiro (He/they)
My poor baby is so confused
He thought being a man was about being a tough provider. His father was supposed to provide, but died trying. His brother was harsh, punishing Mui for any weakness or “girlish” ideas. In Mui’s head: he is a man, and he needs to act like it. Especially after his brother’s death, Mui pushes himself to the extreme to be a strong, tough, manly provider.
but then Tanjiro came along
Mui came to love Tanjiro for his kind, gentle, traditionally motherly nature.
So maybe you don’t have to be hyper masculine to be useful to the world?
Mui just can’t seem to fully connect with either side of masculinity yet.
Mitsuri (she/her)
• has had a history of disliking her body, but only because she wishes she were more feminine • classic girly-girl • Femininity icon • she is my shining star in a world that degrades women
Rengoku (he/him)
The ally ever!!!!!!
Simply never felt uncomfortable in his gender
Is fascinated by those who feel otherwise
His duty is to protect those who are less fortunate
that goes for those who don’t have the confident relationship with gender that he does.
Giyuu (he/him)
Honestly has no idea what trans people are
similar to Rengoku: just never felt any disconnect with his gender
lives under a rock
Shinobu (she/her)
Oh boy
ok
so
Shinobu dislikes her body specifically because it it feminine, small and weak
Often has envied men for their easy strength
No matter how hard she tries, she’ll never reach that ideal she dreams of
so, she has a lot of inner turmoil about wishing she had a man’s body.
BUT
I don’t see her as trans
She would not want to change bodies if she didn’t live in such a strength centric world
She, however, does not know this.
Therefore she’s not-so-casually questioning but would NEVER admit it
She wants what masculinity entails, not masculinity itself. She just doesn’t know that yet.
Sanemi

stealth transmasc Obanai cultist here. Yeah him being cis makes more logical sense, but for that whump potential I can figure something out

Rengoku bc they grew up close together
Senjiro was too young to remember and Rengoku’s mom helped Obanai keep his secret from Sinjuro.
and Shinobu bc of medical reasons
although Obanai is TERRIFIED of her
Mix trauma with females and a very volatile secret and it does not end well.
literally has to be tranquillized for check-ups

he’s so pretty and delicate,,, like how can I make him suffer so that I can continue to admire how his character reacts
