Kah-Bang/Bust
We typically take advantage of this medium to inform everyone about really exciting things that you may or may not have been privy to, or just to spotlight something we really enjoyed and wanted to share it with everyone. Right now, however, I'm going to write about something that's irked me since last month. Kah-Bang moving to Portland was a disappointment. I'm not here to bitch about them doing it, I know fuck all about how to run a business, let alone a festival that likely doesn't end up banking a whole lot after its all said and done. I will say that as bummed as I was about the move, if it was a "do or die" kind of decision, I would much rather have the opportunity to drive to Portland than not have it exist at all. That, however, doesn't seem to be exactly what happened.
When DMX heard he was cut.
I was perusing local news today and thought to myself, "yo, I wonder how people liked seeing DMX?" (my main reason for being jealous of the concert goers). So I dug around a bit, only to find that not only did DMX not play, but they ended up canceling the majority of the music performances they had scheduled, save for a few local bands(seriously, go check out Ghosts of Paul Revere). I had earlier heard that the other headliner, St. Vincent, had dropped from the bill, but I didn't realize that would be the beginning of the end. In a post to the Kah-Bang website titled "A Letter to Our Fans," they cite "several setbacks in our planning the last few weeks, including the loss of some major sponsors" as a cause for the lack of musical performances. I was bummed that I wouldn't be able to see DMX, I'll admit it. But how fucked would it be if you resided in Maine's sprawling metropolis that is Portland and three weeks ago you read that Kah-Bang would actually be in Portland, instead of Bangor. "HOLY SHIT," you'd say. "MY LIFE IS AMAZING." Until, of course, your excitement came to the same brutal demise as everyone in Bangor. This whole Kah-Bang deal has left a bad taste in my mouth since it was announced they were moving, but honestly it wasn't the fact that they were hightailing it that I couldn't stomach. I wasn't aware of one initiative to keep Kah-Bang around here. I'm not saying we should all throw everything we have at them, nor am I saying they deserved to have us fight for them to stay in the first place. I'm just saying that through all the outrage that was expressed locally, you'd think someone would have stepped up to at least ask if there was anything anybody could do to sway the decision. Such is life though, eh? Hopefully next year they can get their act together and continue the really solid work they've put up for the past six years.

But hey, in the mean time we can all go see Alanis Morissette complain about men. Don't tell me you're not excited.
Northern Lungs Wants to Party, You Shouldn't Miss It.
Being invested in local music tends to be a touch and go endeavor. Between members not being committed, to bands not being solid, you can feel a little slighted that people don't just put in a bit more effort to get the return everybody is hoping for. Being from Maine, we're lucky to have so many talented people coming together to create some great groups, but you have to tip your hat to those that go the extra mile and become something that stands out. Northern Lungs is one of those bands you see live and wonder why they haven't been on repeat in your Geo Metro for the last three years. From catchy, punchy riffs to energy that makes it tough to stand still, they're the whole package.
"We just want to party with our friends and have our friends party with us."
Hailing from the Winterport/Hampden area, these dudes grew up like most of us: consumed by Tony Hawk Pro Skater and punk rock. Madison Albert(bass, vocals) started jamming with Ethan Chase (guitar, backing) when they were 14. Caleb Kirk(drums) joined in 2008, with Marc Albert(guitar, backing) jumping on in 2010. Over the last four years they've released around twelve tracks, each sounding more refined than the last and all of them working toward a particular sound for the band, which I feel was achieved in earnest with the song "Czech Republic" on their Winter 2012 demo. After a bit of a recording hiatus, they're hoping to put some new tracks out there this summer. The songs they'll be throwing down aren't rehashed copies of their old stuff though, they have really come into their own with the material they've recently written. 'Barely stop to take a breath' kinda jams with punk riffs that make you want to run like a fool in a circle, coupled with big catchy riffs that you'll curse them for getting stuck in your head(while you secretly wish you could sing along with them every night). All in all, don't sleep on this shit. These guys are dedicated and full of heart, which shows tenfold when you get to see them live.

The Houses of Exquisite Corpses - Bangor
59 Maine artists unite to give abandoned houses in Bangor some life.
"There are so many boarded-up houses in American cities! Pigeon didn't know how he could even begin to cover up just the ones around him... So he enlisted the help of 59 other artists and kids to create gigantic "exquisite corpses". This Surrealist exercise has you construct a section of a figure without knowledge of what the other sections (done by others) look like.
This is only the first installment!! Keep your eyes peeled for what's coming soon on a boarded-up house near you!"

Marianne Ward - Bangor
Spending this cold Saturday browsing through the paintings of Marianne Ward. Words below are from Marianne's website.
"Being open to new ideas and tools keeps my palette fresh. I embrace all things unique and need these things in order to grow and learn from my surroundings. Often times I become bored with regular day to day duties and styles. I find love and laughter in new approaches to my artwork that are bringing out the best in me. Painting is truly my passion and I love experiencing other people’s perception of pieces I have created. I let my moods decide the outcome of a piece. I do not place restrictions or boundaries on my work and this is my key to creating."
"I paint from memory most times. The thoughts that flow when I am picking my pallet are often times like a therapy session for me. I choose to portray negative or pessimistic behavior in a whimsical way. This is my attempt to rid the memories that haunt me on a day to day basis in order to renew the positive growth that is bubbling up inside. I often times paint my Chakra colors without even being aware at the moment, but later analyzing the scene reveals that the colors are in sync with the turmoil I am facing at the time."

Deconstruction of Paper No. 4 - 36"x24" - ink wash/erased/removed, torn paper - 2012
"I am interested in emphasizing the making. The process of making allows me to inquire, to question, which in turn enables me to create. Through a process of questioning the interaction between self and medium, I want to realize, not conclude, the intimate dialogue between intention and control. "
"By either utilizing found objects or working subtractively and additively upon an object considered “new” - one that has yet to be utilized for which it was constructed - I am able to create the illusion of time passed, giving this “new” object a sense of history and wear. This illusion is intended not as trickery or in efforts to evade any kind of innate truth, but rather to illuminate the inevitable falsities inherent in art making."

Rat Trap X Tyler O'Grady - "Constant Fear" EP
Rat Trap has released their "Constant Fear" EP with art by Maine artist Tyler O'Grady. The artwork is heavily inspired by the band's social, political and anti-religious lyrics.
"I wanted something that was gonna scare the shit out of people., or just really fucking piss them off." said Tyler when asked to describe the cover. "The vision was to do all the art work in black in white. I got really into the stark contrast the pair. I was pulling a lot of influence from early crust and anarcho punk album and flyer artwork. Bands like Dropdead and Crass always had great black and white graphics. I was looking at a lot of those records while making the work for Constant Fear."
Rat Trap is a fast, thrashy, pissed off hardcore band from Boston. "Constant Fear" is Rat Trap's sophomore release and their first on vinyl.
Pre-order your copy of the "CONSTANT FEAR" 7" for limited white vinyl pressings. This is a one-time pressing and will be shipped in mid to late December. Visit their Band Camp page to preorder the record, you can also download it for free.
