18x15 was … something! I think the acting was absolutely brilliant. Oliver Stark, Peter Krause, Angela Bassett, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Anirudh Pishrody, and Jennifer Love Hewitt did wonderful jobs (I was particularly proud of Oliver and Peter’s performances). However, I do have some critiques and frustrations:
1) The reason why Bobby was killed off
At first I was only upset that they were killing him off because I love the character. I wasn’t upset about why until I found out that it wasn’t because Peter Krause wanted to leave the show. He didn’t. The reason was, as it’s been shown in interviews, Tim Minear felt like “it would’ve been too comfortable to keep everything status quo and happy happy.” I’m sorry but…that doesn’t seem to be a reason to kill a character? He only did it for shock value which is not a good reason. There are other ways to break status quo (ex: Chris and Eddie’s storyline this season). Fans enjoyed being comfortable that the main characters would live. It hasn’t ever taken anything away from any storyline or any cliff hanger before. I understand that it his death obviously has a big effect on the characters and that makes it interesting story wise, but to have Bobby and Athena be building a house this season just for Athena to have to live in it alone feels particularly cruel and doesn’t make sense to me. Bobby and Athena’s relationship is one of the strongest points of the show.
Also, Bobby’s whole storyline and the point of his character has been him finding worth in living after his past mistakes. His near death in S7 addressed his childhood and past and to kill off a character who’s now happy and wants to live does not send a good message. It’s just sad.
2) The leaks of Bobby’s death
Tim Minear said in an interview that: “But then no one thought that if we take Bobby’s coffin out into downtown LA, people might notice. We’re not that bright on some level.” Of course people would notice?? You’re filming in the middle of the day, in LA, not hiding anything, and it’s one of the most popular shows on TV right now. I’d have to fact check it but I’m pretty confident that it is in ABC’s top shows, if not at number one. That’s just silly and cruel to the fans to let it leak like that.
3) Not seeing Eddie’s reaction
We really couldn’t have seen Buck FaceTiming Eddie? Or telling him next episode? Or see Eddie’s reaction to the news in L.A about the whole situation at all? After Buck and Bobby, Eddie is the most popular male character! To not have his reaction and be told in Tim’s interview that he finds out off-screen is just…not treating or respecting Eddie’s character right. No matter what you think about Tommy or BuckTommy, Eddie objectively is a closer character to Buck. To see Tommy’s reaction to Buck breaking down and not Eddie’s doesn’t feel right to me.
4) They underestimated how much fans love Bobby
I think Tim Minear/the show truly didn’t realize how much fans really did love Bobby and not just Bobby - but his relationships to characters in the show like Athena and Buck. As I said before, his relationship with Athena is a really strong point of the show, and so is his father-son relationship with Buck. I’m a bit nervous on how this is going to affect the show and I can only hope that they can have good storylines. It might not be too bad because Grey’s Anatomy is still going after Derek died in S11. However, I’ve seen people say that GA hasn’t felt the same since Derek died, and that it lost something. I’m nervous that that might be the same with 9-1-1 and Bobby.
It truly appears to me that they killed off Bobby for shock value and because Tim didn’t want people to be comfortable and thinking that everyone is safe. Not only do I feel like that’s not a good reason for killing off a character, but it hasn’t changed anything for me in terms of being “comfortable”. They’re not gonna kill off Buck, Athena, Eddie, Chim, Hen, or even Maddie. The show would suffer from that. If they wanted to keep everyone on their toes, there are other storylines and changes they could’ve made. But no, they killed off Bobby just because they could.
