I've seen some posts trying to make fun of former gifted kids by comparing them to former student athletes who insist that they could have gone pro if not for a specific injury, and those posts always backfire, because my reaction to them is "You're right, we should treat former student athletes with more compassion than we currently do"

I went from being very physically active to getting the "your body doesn't make energy properly anymore" disability so I can completely understand the grief that comes with circumstances outside your control destroying parts of you you were once proud of and locking you out of the life you could have had. It's not a good feeling.

There's also something to be said about the student athlete whose life is laid out for them through the pathway of athletics and then suddenly has that taken away. A high school injury eliminating the scholarship opportunity or full ride to a college of their choice. A college injury eliminating the career option they spent YEARS working toward. That they likely didn't prepare an alternative for because it was Guaranteed. Now suddenly they're stranded and have to figure out that alternative. And perhaps even lacking support in doing so. "It's a shame they were injured. They could have been something."

I had a student this year with a TBI. He was a FUCKING FRESHMAN. His coach told him to walk it off. This 14 year old child took a hit hard enough to total a brand new $300 football helmet and his coach told him to walk it off. His coach was still letting him play. At no point that I can tell had anyone made any effort to explain to him the kind of danger he was in. No one was worried about him. No one was concerned about the very real chance that he would not LIVE to see college if he kept taking hits like that.

Why do we want to act like children getting life changing or life ending injuries are something to laugh at? Why is this not infuriating? Do you have any idea how many of those 'career ending' knee and ankle injuries could have been minor temporary injuries if they had been given adequate medical care and rest? If we weren't making fucking children 'walk it off' with the fucking idiot macho bullshit student athletics is full of?

I saw a similar amount of ableism for gifted students as well- when we naturally went on to develop anxiety and panic attacks they were like "what if you just did the important tests anyways :) or we'll kick you out" so when I became a student athlete in college and saw them ignore the medical needs of someone having an asthma attack I was like "oh more of this shit then I guess"

Teachers and coaches do not treat students as people, I fear

I am hoping to collect several thousand such posts, so that I have a decent sized dataset. I do not care what the post is about; if it's labeled as "mature content", I want to add it to my dataset.

If I get 10,000 posts in my dataset before August 31st 2026, I will post my preliminary findings then. I won't feel comfortable calling my findings "settled" before 2027, unless I get over 50,000 posts.

The midjourney stuff just reminds of when we were trying to find a new platform to host the ao3 donation form, and companies kept trying to tell me about all their "ai" features that would track donor engagement, and figure out the optimal pattern to email individual donors asking for follow up donations, and all the ways they suggest we manipulate people into staying on our websites. It was a great way to filter out who either wasn't listening to us when we described our ethics and donor base, or just didn't believe us.

Now granted ao3 is a unique case based on a) the amount of page views we get in any given time period and b) the fact that most donors absolutely do Not want to be identified as such anywhere, (the default "list of recent donors" module got nuked Immediately) but it surprised me some that the concept of "donors who value their privacy and would be furious at even the whiff of AI" is unique. Some of us really are just existing in different worlds.

The last part was kind of insane, honestly. When we started changing platforms for the donor database, I kept telling them that yes I was aware we already had an account for the volunteer database, and no that could not be connected to the donor database. And they said yes fine sure and then connected them anyway. And I called them back and said, excuse me, I'm confused, I can see both databases. And they said, well, yeah, but it's only you, someone has to be able to see both databases to give other users access. The other users can't see both. And I said, no, we have been asking for a completely separate database. I should not be able to see both. And they said, you are one organization, one organization can't have two databases. And I said, last year someone used our volunteer email list to commit approximately one thousand felonies. Please feel free to imagine how much worse it could have been had they had a way to use volunteers' email addresses to get their legal names. We do not want this to be something anyone can do no matter how much we trust them. Let me describe those felonies to you in more detail. And they emailed me two hours later and said, you can have two separate databases.
