Tin-foil hat time. Suppose that you're a showrunner for a show that has long since outlived its reason for being, and interest has waned. You want to get as many people to tune back in for the end as possible. How do you do it?

One way would be to tailor a shit show to piss off as many different demographics as possible. Make a fan favorite character gay to piss off your straight and homophobic audience, and then immediately kill him to piss off your queer audience. Kill off one of the protagonists in the most pointless way possible. And talk up just how terrible it's gonna be too get people to tune back in and watch the train wreck.

If that was the plan, it definitely worked
