Intro post!

Hi I’m Cait! But you might known me better by the online alias Abomy. This is my art blog that I use to mainly post fanart for whatever fandom I’m currently fixating on.

The current fandoms I’m drawing for are: Starkid, Tin Can Bros (& probably Ghost in the future)

My art tag is #my art or #fanart, asks are #asks and general talking is #abomy talks

Any artwork Iv drawn for content that is currently not freely available/paywalled are tagged with #(name) spoilers, which will be removed from the post once said content becomes public.

i'm not trying to start discourse. i completely understand where you're coming from. i think i never see it that way because it never felt like it was about race. starkid / theatre tend to not base on race when casting. at least from what i've witnessed/enjoyed. i could be wrong, but i really don't think this is meant to be a problematic thing or something they've even considered as such. it's fine to notice and say something, sure, but i don't think it's fair to necessarily almost outright call it what you are. which at its core is saying it is something racial driven and it's not. it feels weird and i'm not trying to be defensive or protect or whatever. i'm just trying to share a different view on it.

Not every act of racism is intentional or planned. Racism isn’t some big bad evil person who always acts with the intent to be racist. Racism is a thing people do, think, say and believe, regardless of if they are aware what they are doing is racist.

Despite Starkids past with racist stereotypes / caricatures / tropes / jokes within their musicals (Cho Chang, Taz, a lot of Holy Musical B@man), I genuinly do not believe that this was an intentional act of racism. Nor do I believe (from what we know so far) they wrote the character of Ben with a specific race in mind. However, it does not invalidate the fact that, with a black actor playing him, he becomes a racist trope. Intent does not negate the harm or impact.

Nick and Matt Lang are writers. They are professional writers who have been doing this for 17 years. They should be aware of racist stereotypes / tropes and purposefully avoid casting their very few actors of colour within these roles.

“Colour blind casting” isn’t enough. A role can become racist when an actor of colour plays it, due to the colour of their skin changing the context of the character into a racist trope / caricature / stereotype. When this occurs, the casting director should put in the time, effort, and care into casting the actor into a different role. Theatre casting shouldn’t just be “colour blind”, it needs to be explicitly anti-racist.

All of this still does not address the issue that the only person within the cast who is not featured on any of the merchandise is Corey. The only actor of colour.

As much as I love starkid they are not above criticism. I still believe this was a very weird casting choice, regardless of if it was intentional or not.

Maybe I’m being the friend that’s Too Woke™ but having Corey be the dead friend in Tomb Quest is kinda giving the “Black dude dies first” trope.

Out of the entire cast they have the only visible racial minority be a guy who dies off screen. And they don’t even give him the grace of his character being featured on the merchandise (genuinely everybody’s character is on this poster bar Corey’s- despite the fact his character is suppose to show up within the tabletop game).

Idk man I feel as if they could have casted anybody else to play the dead friend role.
