She also guilt-tripped him and moped for a year. He was someone who, as JK Rowling has said, just wanted people to like him - he went along with seriously not-okay stuff just so people wouldn’t be mad at him. So when Mrs. Weasley and Tonks ganged up on him to reciprocate, he was basically manipulated into being with Tonks. He was clearly unhappy the entire time and regretted it. Just because he pretended to be happy towards the end doesn’t change that — remember, Harry guilt-tripped him into going back. Remus was someone who was obsessed with getting the approval of others. 

Plus, Tonks’ incessant and annoying moping in the sixth book just, ugh. I just couldn’t, guys. That’s not how a strong female acts, ever ever ever.

Excuse me for pressing this, but I can’t not defend my OTP. 

The vision many people paint of Tonks is this sobbing girl who just ran around chasing Remus all of HBP. None of that is even remotely true. She did not only not seek out confrontations with Remus, she avoided seeing him for much of the book. She continued her work as an Auror, and Harry even notes that she seems “much more serious and purposeful”. She hasn’t fallen apart at the seams or given up. She’s not a mess that sits in her room all day eating chocolate ice cream. She is simply sad and concerned about her love. Women can be openly sad, and I resent the idea of an arbitrary deadline when they need to “get over it”.

 On the subject of Remus’s feelings for Tonks:

1. This is a novel. There is an author who writes things for a reason. From a writer’s perspective, there is no reason to give a character a flaw (such as Remus’s insecurity), have him make a mistake based on that (marry Tonks even when he doesn’t love her), and then never address it as a problem. She doesn’t address even the idea that this might be true. Never once is it ever suggested by any character that Remus is doing this to please her and not himself. It would be a poor way to handle his character. 

2. When Remus loses control and starts ranting, never once does he suggest that he doesn’t love her. Remus isn’t trying to impress or please anyone. He’s in hysterics. If he was ever going to reveal that he didn’t love Tonks, wouldn’t that have been the time? He says why he regrets marrying her; are we not supposed to take him at his word? 

3. When we see Remus again, he not only is happy about his son’s birth, he is speaking affectionately of “Dora”, who he insists his son resembles. He seems “dazed by his own happiness” and he brings up his wife at every opportunity. Every indication is that he is thrilled at having a family and happy in his marriage. 

 And…I need to stop.

If you think Remus didn’t love Tonks, you need to take a look at the character again. In POA, Remus says he felt guilty for leading his friends into becoming animagi with him. He seemed to view it as an indulgence he shouldn’t have allowed to happen, and he talked about Tonks in the same way: An indulgance that he was selfish and stupid to accept. He didn’t hate Tonks, he hated himself. the frustration in DH isn’t with Tonks, it’s with HIMSELF for “ruining” the reputation of the woman he loved. He even kicked a chair over in frustration that he ruined her life, and his unborn child’s.

I think the most detrimental part of this entire thread is when it was assumed that strong women are not suppose to show emotions and are just being mopey and annoying for doing so. At the end of the day these are fictional characters but you made it real when telling women they are weak to show their emotion to others and that’s wrong!!! Do better!!!
