It wasn’t the end of the world. Maybe if this place was my livelihood I’d start panicking or packing up, but it’s not. I’m a vet, I own my own home, and I’m not hurting if my vegetables get looted. The garden’s a hobby at best, and yeah, maybe it was Grandma’s pride and joy, but I warned her I killed my mom’s geraniums when she told me she was leaving me the house, so it’s not like she has room for disappointment.
If anything, the rabbits are lucky they picked my land to figure out civilization on, because I’m pretty sure my neighbor Carl would be dropping dynamite down the burrows in my shoes.
I won’t lie, I came close. Monster Truck got out while I wasn’t looking, and when he came hobbling home with a goddamn spearhead embedded in his leg, I was about ready to rain my own personal Iliad down on the little bastards. Lucky for them, treating arrow wounds on my cat gave me enough time to calm down and think. I figure it was self defense. I don’t like letting my cats outside off-harness anyway, and I would’ve been plenty upset if he’d come home with a dead bunny in his mouth.

Kim Dokja is rereading TWSA for the nth time when Yoo Joonghyuk comes up behind him and snakes an arm around his waist. Kim Dokja flinches, his shoulders hunching up towards his ears as he fights the instinctual urge to flip his phone to prevent anyone from reading over his shoulder, even knowing that he’s the only one who can see the TWSA text file.

“Yoo Joonghyuk,” Kim Dokja sighs, clicking his phone off and pocketing it. “Can’t you announce yourself properly, instead of… this?”
The hand on Kim Dokja’s hip tightens slightly, as if feeling threatened.
“No,” Yoo Joonghyuk says. No other explanation follows.
“Well try,” Kim Dokja says, trying to squirm away from the touch. In retaliation, Yoo Joonghyuk brings his other arm up and around him as well, now fully hugging him from behind.
Kim Dokja’s squirming gets a bit more intense.
“Stay put,” Yoo Joonghyuk hisses.
“Or what? Are you going to knock me out just to get a hug?”
“I might,” Yoo Joonghyuk warns. He doesn’t sound like he’s joking.
…Kim Dokja stops squirming. Yoo Joonghyuk hums in satisfaction, dipping his head down to nose at the back of Kim Dokja’s neck in a way that makes him shiver.
Really, since when was Yoo Joonghyuk the kind of guy to be this clingy? There had been some moments in his second regression where he’d held Lee Seolhwa, but they’d usually been after a particularly difficult battle or when Yoo Joonghyuk had lost someone.
Right now, there isn’t anything like that to justify it. There hadn’t been anything to justify it the last four times, either, but Yoo Joonghyuk seemed to be making it a habit to put his hands on Kim Dokja any time they were within reach. Once, he’d even done it mid-scenario - granted, it was a moment of down time before the next round of fighting began, but it had still been enough to make Kim Dokja feel like he was going to break out in hives.
“I’m not going to suddenly become incorporeal just because you don’t have your hands on me,” Kim Dokja mutters, still a bit dissatisfied. Even through his clothes, the heat of Yoo Joonghyuk’s hands is enough to be distracting.
“Hm,” Yoo Joonghyuk says, sounding like he disagrees. “That isn’t why I want to touch you.”

“You -!” Yoo Joonghyuk cuts himself off, instead choosing to vent his frustration by biting at the nape of Kim Dokja’s neck.

…What the hell, Yoo Joonghyuk actually bit him hard enough for Kim Dokja’s skill to activate?!
Irritated, Kim Dokja slaps Yoo Joonghyuk off of him and ducks away, finally freeing himself. Yoo Joonghyuk lets him go, but his eyes are dark as they watch him. Kim Dokja watches him back, wary, and brings a hand up to the back of his neck. It isn’t bloody, but there’s a definite imprint of where Yoo Joonghyuk’s teeth had dug in.
“Yah, you bastard, are you hungry? I thought you only ate food you prepared yourself, so what the hell was that for?!”
Yoo Joonghyuk looks at him silently for another moment, his fingers twitching at his sides as if wishing he could press them back into Kim Dokja’s skin, before he scoffs and looks away.
“Han Sooyoung recommended exposure therapy.”
“To biting?”
“To being touched,” Yoo Joonghyuk clarifies. “You’re too skittish.”
“Apologies for being a bit on edge as the apocalypse is happening,” Kim Dokja snaps, knowing very well that isn’t what Yoo Joonghyuk had been referring to.
He isn’t exactly opposed to being touched - not by Yoo Joonghyuk, at least - but it isn’t something he likes, either. It makes his skin feel itchy and overly sensitive, the way a cat might feel when their fur has been stroked in the wrong direction.
“Kim Dokja,” Yoo Joonghyuk calls, sounding a bit sour, “you don’t flinch when you’re punched.”
“Well, maybe if you stopped attacking me every time I irritated you, I wouldn’t be so used to it.”
A beat passes.
“Actually,” Kim Dokja says, realizing that he’d practically just agreed that this so-called ‘exposure therapy’ for casual touch might work, “forget that. I’ll work on practicing my flinches instead.”
Yoo Joonghyuk scoffs but says nothing, turning his head away to look elsewhere.
He doesn’t leave, though. He just stands there, and Kim Dokja is also standing there, and it’s… awkward. It’s so awkward, just like every time Yoo Joonghyuk tries to approach him in a casual fashion these days. More and more, Kim Dokja regrets kissing that bastard back all those weeks ago. Things had never been this awkward between them before that.
“Do you,” Kim Dokja forces himself to ask, “want something?”
Yoo Joonghyuk’s head whips back around to look at him so fast that Kim Dokja wouldn’t have been surprised if it cracked something.
“Will you fulfill it?” he asks, suspicious.
“Within reason,” Kim Dokja allows. It would be better than standing around like this until Yoo Joonghyuk found a way to get it without asking, anyway.
Silently, Yoo Joonghyuk holds out his hand. Kim Dokja stares at it. After a moment, he tentatively reaches out to rest his own fingers lightly on Yoo Joonghyuk’s palm.

Yoo Joonghyuk’s face contorts with a scowl, and he snaps his hand up to wrap tightly around Kim Dokja’s wrist before he can back away. With a sharp tug, Yoo Joonghyuk forces him to stumble closer.
“Do you think I’m poor?” Yoo Joonghyuk snaps. “I wouldn’t ask someone as stingy as you for coins in the first place.”
“I can tell,” Kim Dokja grunts as he tugs at his wrist, futilely trying to pull it from Yoo Joonghyuk’s grasp. “Given all the coins you’ve put into strength, you bastard. Give me my hand back!”
Rather than listening, Yoo Joonghyuk brings his free hand up to once more rest at Kim Dokja’s waist. Kim Dokja tenses; Yoo Joonghyuk holding him like that feels a lot more… intimate, when they’re standing face to face.
“Just - stay like this. For a minute,” Yoo Joonghyuk grits out. “That’s my request.”
“...Just a minute?”
Yoo Joonghyuk gives him a warning look, and Kim Dokja clicks his tongue. After a moment, he forces himself to relax, muscle by muscle, until he resembles what a normal person might look like when they’re being held by their… whatever Yoo Joonghyuk is to him. Life and Death Companion is still the easiest answer, he supposes.
Yoo Joonghyuk’s touch still feels too warm, too heavy. It grounds Kim Dokja in a way he isn’t sure he’s comfortable with.
It… isn’t bad, though, either.
“Like this,” Yoo Joonghyuk says quietly, sensing Kim Dokja’s acceptance. “Stay like this.”
“Just for a minute,” Kim Dokja mutters.
Yoo Joonghyuk’s hands flex around Kim Dokja.
“After a minute,” he says, voice suddenly sounding a bit dangerous, “you hold me back.”
If you look at the background characters you can see women in pants, but I’ve yet to see a man in a skirt, and thus far our main cast have been very ‘girls get skirts, guys get pants’
So I watched episode two. It's fine, I guess? I have a couple mixed feelings.
I liked what they're doing with Betazed/the Betazoids and their planet coalition. It's really fleshing out the world post-burn and I liked the influence of the Betazed youth group, and how it gives Tarima's character some solid grounding/motivation.
Caleb is great, but I've already decided Sam and Jay-Den are my favorites and there was criminally little of them in ep 2. More focus on the supporting cast would have been appreciated.
The 'you need to stay in starfleet/at the academy' conversation was repeated too much. He made his choice and wavered once, we didn't need to talk about it four times. I appreciate that they're not treating him with kid gloves just because of his tragic backstory, but also he could probably use a little more support.
It is very american and kind of militarized. They never explained why Caleb's hair was forcibly cut and Jay-Den's just restyled beyond an implied 'Klingon's wear their hair like this, human males wear their hair like that'. And I'm kind of stuck on the hair thing because how you have your hair is usually deeply personal and important and long hair (especially on men) is usually a signal of not being in/going against authority/a facist government (see: rebels vs the empire in Star Wars and Coriolanus Snow's hair being cut in the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes).
And in a similar vein, the outfits. There is nothing overtly wrong with them (besides Tarima's one outfit at the party, I would say), but the little things do add up. Their uniforms are skits and pants and while this is presumably a choice thing and any gender can wear whatever, our main cast has the masc characters in pants and the fem characters in skirts. While I've seen background fem characters wearing pants, I have not seen background masc characters wearing skirts (and I have been looking). I've been paying less attention to the hairstyles of background characters than the outfits, but it does generally seem to be be girls = long hair, boys = short hair.
And on Tarima's outfits specifically. It's not that they show skin, it's that none of the other Betazoids and none of the male characters have outfits that show even close to as much. Her brother and father are buttoned up to the chin in layers, and there's only one other (female) Betazoid with a slightly similar outfit. Her brother gets boots and pants and she gets a short skirt and heels and that's fine except it doesn't exist in a vacuum and we've already started to see a male/female divide in fashion very similar to our own (misogynistic) fashion trends. And it was just so jarring in a scene where Caleb's got his full uniform on and buttoned up.
I did like that Tarima joined the War College. While I have mixed feelings about its existence, I think it makes sense in-universe and hopefully contributes to how militarized the regular academy currently is (as in: it will get less as they progress back into peacetime). I think her decision lines up with what they've set up for her character and puts her in a less traditionally feminine role, which is a good contrast to how stereotypically male/female things have been so far.
And I do love how awkwardly teenage they can be sometimes.

A new bowl approaches. Bought myself some soup bowls from the 70s with goofy little geese on them for my own birthday (though I did not get them in time for my miyeok-guk), because what else is free will for. This puts me at 86. I JUST MIGHT MAKE IT? SOMEHOW?
