You stand before a large painting of a young woman. She is dressed in an extravagant red gown. Her hair had been meticulously styled to represent her high status. The pins in her hair have charms dangling from the ends. It is the symbol of the Xianzhou Empire. Her hands are placed on her lap with her left on top to display a beautiful engagement ring.
She is stunning. The artist had captured her details so perfectly, forever in precise strokes and vibrant paint. Many who walk down this very hallway have to stop and look in awe at this creation. Unable to touch it, they can only move closer to the portrait and examine the flow of the brush.
You, on the other hand, can only stare at the painting with disdain. It is not towards the woman, for she is not the one at fault. The disdain is for the story behind how this painting came to be and how it was hung in this very spot.
The name of the woman in the painting is Xinyue. The ring on her finger was placed there by the creator of the Xianzhou Empire, Emperor Jing Yuan. This overly detailed portrait was a gift from him to her. It’s to display the beauty and grace of the future Empress.
But that story is why you hold disdain for the painting. Because only months before, another portrait was in this very spot for the same reasoning.
Her painting replaced yours.
Here, in the Xianzhou Palace, your existence is well known. You play an important and occasionally overlooked role in the Royal Court. Politics. The peace treaties between the Empire and other kingdoms were made possible through you. Battles were avoided because of your interference. Alliances hadn’t been broken by your influence.
Before Xinyue, you were the future Empress to be. Jing Yuan adored you, he praised you, he loved you. While he was the fighter, you were the tactician. A perfect pair to rule over the Empire.
And so suddenly, the ring was removed from your finger. Another woman began to roam the palace halls with a different ring given to her by Jing Yuan that held the same meaning. Forged to her exact measurements and liking, Lady Xinyue is now the bride to be for the Emperor. He adores her, he praises her, he loves her.
Now your painting is gone. It is stored in a location unknown to you, serving only to collect dust.
He gave you no reasoning behind his actions. Why had he discarded you off to the side that easily? Years of loyalty to each other and it ended abruptly.
“My Lady,” A voice from the end of the hall directed your attention away from the painting. There is a servant who had been tasked with finding you. She witnessed you intently staring at the artwork hanging on the wall. Knowing your story, she felt a sense of pity deep down in her heart for you. “The guests from Amphoreus are waiting. The meeting will begin soon.”
Amphoreus. A vast land which you had never been to. It was hard to explain how different things worked there compared to the Xianzhou Empire. But of course, like other country leaders, they were here for the exact same reasoning.
Your eyes flicked over to the painting again and then gave the servant a curt nod as a sign of thanks, “Very well.”
It wouldn’t be proper of you to keep the guests of Amphoreus waiting. So, you followed behind the servant woman. The image of the painting lingered in the back of your mind. Unfortunately, with how many times you passed by it since it was hung, you knew it well to the most minute detail.
You arrived outside of the Royal Courts meeting room. All important discussions were held here and away from the prying ears of the servants. Two Cloud Knights stood on either side of the double doors.
Today, behind those doors, were three of the twelve Chrysos Heirs from Amphoreus. Lady Aglaea, Lord Phainon, and Lord Mydeimos.
In recent times, Jing Yuan expressed his interest in having Amphoreus become part of the Xianzhou Empire. This would give him total and absolute control over the region. What that meant is that you would get stuck doing all the diplomatic work. You were very good at what you did, but the Emperor seemed to have a hard time comprehending how impossible it was to sway the Chrysos Heirs.
They weren’t bad people. They, however, were extremely intelligent. They knew how to deny whenever something felt the slightest bit wrong to them. After all, it was twelve of them and only one of you.
Regardless, the guards opened the doors for you. The attendees for today’s meeting were already sitting down at the table. Members of the Xianzhou Royal Court had huddled themselves by the head of the table, the chair reserved for the Emperor. Though you weren’t too focused on them.
As soon as you stepped into the room, the sound of two chairs being pushed back made everyone’s heads turn in that direction. Phainon and Mydei were both standing. It was nice to see that the men of Amphoreus held the utmost respect for women. They at least still stood up whenever a lady walked into the room.
At their side was Aglaea, who continued to remain seated with the others but kindly smiled at you.
“My Lady,” She then stood up once you drew closer to them, “It’s good to see you again.”
“Likewise, Lady Aglaea.” You said, shifted your gaze to the other two Chrysos Heirs to greet them. Phainon gently took your hand in his and bowed as a sign of respect. Mydei copied his action, more careful with his clawed armor. “Gentlemen, thank you for being here.”
“It's always an honor to be in your presence.” Phainon said, placing a hand on his chest.
The heavy doors creaked, indicating someone else had arrived. There is a shift in the atmosphere in the room. His Grace, Jing Yuan, entered.
Everyone immediately stood up and turned to bow. His boots clicked against the floor. But there were a second pair of footsteps that followed. He hadn’t arrived alone, and you weren’t expecting him to. He had his betrothed, Xinyue, following behind him. Your brows slowly narrowed despite trying to hide your expression.
A frown settled on Aglaea’s face, but she covered it up by clearing her throat and placing the back of her hand over her lips. Neither Phainon nor Mydei were pleased at this turn of events. When the Emperor suddenly broke off your long term engagement, the news spread across the lands. His actions were considered an abomination in the eyes of Amphoreus, a sign of ultimate disrespect towards you.
“Greetings,” Jing Yuan stopped once he reached the head of the table. He noticed that amongst everyone in the room, you weren’t looking at him. As per usual, you were being cold towards him. “My apologies, I haven’t had time to properly address the three of you since your arrival at the Empire.”
“You don’t need to apologize, Your Grace.” Aglaea said, “You’re a busy man. We understand.”
“Xinyue will be joining us for this meeting.” He motioned over to his fiancée standing right beside him. She held her hands in front of her, behaving like a proper woman. “Is that alright?”
And everyone, in unison responded the same thing, “Of course, Your Grace.” Because no one could be opposed to it. So they had to accommodate and made room for Xinyue. She took the first chair, sitting on the left side of the table. It forced the Royal Court Members to all move one chair down.
You realized you wouldn’t have a place to sit. That’s until you felt a hand gently touching your upper arm to get your attention. The owner’s hand was recognizable by the feel of armor.
“My Lady.” Mydei held onto the back of his chair. He was offering his seat at the table up to you. You glanced at the open chair before walking over to it. You tucked your dress comfortably as you sat down. He then carefully pushed the chair closer to the table. This left you sitting directly across Aglaea and Phainon. A much better position since you would be doing most of the talking with the Chrysos Heirs.
“Thank you,” You said, though not sparing him a second glance. You could feel Jing Yuan’s gaze focused intently on the interaction. And not only that, Mydei remained behind you as if he were your most trusted guard, tasked with protecting you. His lingering presence was… Soothing, in a way. “Let us begin,”
The meeting proceeded. It dragged on for hours. Although on certain occasions, Feixiao and Yao Guang left their input, you had most of the control at the table. It was a back and forth between you and the three Chrysos Heirs. They were not easily persuaded by your statements.
Where Jing Yuan wanted them to see it fit that they join the Empire, they were more towards leaning into an alliance. You weren’t necessarily objecting to that idea, but you knew you’d hear a handful if you didn’t try to negotiate harder with them.
“Amphoreus has prospered under the rule of the Chrysos Heirs.” Aglaea explained, “Our people are happy. They’re content. We’ve avoided many conflicts with other countries. That is what matters most to us.”
The Heirs took their sworn oath to protect their people seriously. You were actually against trying to convince them to give up their rightful thrones. Except, you were a servant who had to fight for the Emperor’s desires. As soon as you were going to speak again, a new person decided to chime in.
“But why have twelve separate rulers, when you could be under the control of one benevolent ruler instead?” Xinyue’s voice rang from the front of the table.
You were baffled, immediately turning over to her. It silenced the others at the table. They looked amongst each other. No one wanted to say it, but they were all thinking the same thing. Xinyue wanted to play your role, and she would fail miserably at this game.
You wished you could say none of this was her fault. Since she knew of your history with Jing Yuan, she was attempting to prove herself. This was her way of saying to you that she was better, and once she became the Empress, you were no longer going to be needed. Her issue was that she had a closed minded attitude, always believing that the Xianzhou Empire could do no wrong.
“Under the control of one benevolent ruler?” The deep voice from behind you said. Mydei held back a scoff at her ignorance. Aglaea had to give him a stern look to remind him who he was speaking against. Though, it was ignored when he continued, “The people of Amphoreus don’t need history to repeat itself. We have only recently been released from Nikador’s grasp.”
Xinyue grew silent. She didn’t know of Amphoreus’ extensive history like you or other members of the Royal Court. In fact, she wasn’t very knowledgeable about the reign of the different lands either. It was unfortunate she struck a nerve in Lord Mydeimos with her comment.
You immediately looked over at Fu Xuan, retainer of the Emperor. When your gaze met hers, she instantly knew what you were trying to say. She was forced to intervene, “Why don’t we put this meeting on hold for today? I think that’s enough discussing this matter. We can continue tomorrow.”
“Yes, I do agree.” Aglaea said, her hands letting go to gently push her chair back.
You exhaled lowly in relief. Fu Xuan had leverage with her position in the Court. Ending the discussion for the time being was better before someone ended up making matters worse.
The meeting room emptied.
Everyone went on their separate paths and attended to their own matters. You had gone with Aglaea, escorting her to the guest wing where she was staying during her time here. You spoke with her, catching up now that you weren’t forced to talk about anything politically related.
Eventually, you decided to say your goodbyes so she could rest.
You wandered through the halls, heading to that same hallway from early this morning in order to return to your chambers. You arrived, only to find out you weren’t alone.
In the distance, Mydei is before that painting and examining it in silence with his arms crossed over his chest. He’s sharp enough to know someone else is in the hallway with him. You had no intentions to stop and talk to him. Your heels echoed through the empty hallway as you walked with your head held high. Just as you passed him, you were forced to stop.
“Lady (Y/N),” He called out to you. His gaze remained fixated on the painting of Xinyue. You closed your eyes for a brief moment. This meant you had to face him, otherwise, it would be improper. He asked the very question you were dreading to hear come from a guest. “Was your portrait not here before?”
How embarrassing.
“Yes, it was.” Your response was short. As expected. He glanced over his shoulder at you. He watched your reaction closely. He motioned to the canvas.
“And… Where is it now?” Mydei asked. His newest question left you puzzled. Your eyes narrowed slightly and your head tilted to the side.
“Where is what?”
“Your portrait.” He elaborated. “Where is your portrait now?”
That made you stop and think about it for a brief moment.
Jing Yuan commissioned the painting as a gift. He wanted everyone to see the beauty of the woman he was going to marry. He was a prideful man, you were his greatest treasure. With everything that happened, you never once wondered where your painting disappeared to.
Why did Mydeimos care? Was he trying to make fun of you? You, who once held the Emperor’s affection and wore his ring on your finger, didn’t even know where the painting dedicated to you had gone.
“I do not know.” You said in a defensive manner. The faintest hint of snark didn’t go unnoticed for the Kremnoan. “Why not ask a servant for its whereabouts?”
He chose to remain silent as you left. Perhaps it was a mistake to ask such a blunt question. He could have worded it differently. It wasn’t his intention to upset you. But you were gone now, and he couldn’t apologize.
His eyes went from the right end of the hallway to the left where you originally came from. Mydei stood there for a moment longer, before making up his mind. He turned the other way with the objective of finding the closest member of the Royal Court.
“You wish for me to go to Amphoreus?”
“Yes.” Jing Yuan nodded his head. He reclined in his chair while you stood across from his desk. He laced his hands together, “That’s exactly what I said. I want you to go to Amphoreus so you can see why they don’t want to join the Empire. Simple as that.”
It had been two months since the three Chrysos Heirs departed from the Empire. The meeting, as you assumed it would be, was unsuccessful. Not a single one of the offers made swayed them. They didn’t bother dwelling on it, and continued proposing an alliance.
It only made the Emperor more insistent. You couldn’t disobey. You lived in the Xianzhou Empire and held a position in the Royal Court. Obeying his direct orders were your every day command. That’s why he chose you to do every diplomatic duty for him, no matter what it was. This is what you had studied and trained for since a young age.
You weren’t fond of the idea of traveling. You truly never liked it and viewed it to be a hassle. With the change in season, the heatwaves would make your experience worse than usual.
“Perhaps they don’t see it fit to join the Empire.” You said. Jing Yuan raised his brow before a smile spread on his face and he let out a short chuckle.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” He said. “It doesn’t matter. I’ve already sent a letter. Once it’s discussed with the Chrysos Heirs and they’ve given permission, you’ll take your leave for Amphoreus immediately. Do you understand?”
If you had to argue with Anaxagoras, you might lose your mind. Instead, you exhaled and nodded your head.
“As you desire, Your Grace.” You bowed.
“Now then. That is settled. Moving on,” Jing Yuan crossed his arms over his chest, “Have you reconsidered my proposal?” Your gaze darkened for the briefest moment. But he was an attentive man, and the shift in your eyes didn’t go unnoticed.
“My answer was no the first time and it will be no each time you ask.” You said with a sharp tone. The corner of his lip twitched downwards. He placed his hands on his desk, pushing himself up from his chair.
“And why is that? You refuse to tell me your reasoning.” He walked around his desk with slow steps. He stood in front of you and reached out, his fingertips grazing your jawline. They came underneath your chin and lifted your head to meet his gaze. “Is it really such a detestable life to become my concubine? All I desire is to keep you at my side.”
This is what you had been reduced to. From his lover and fiancée to a mere puppet he could control. He’d done it so easily and with no remorse, you wondered if he ever loved you at all.
“You used to go about that in a better manner.” You held his gaze. Your words silenced him.
His proposal was like a slap in the face. He replaced you with Xinyan. And you, with an aching heart, had to accept it. Then he turned around and asked that you become a concubine once he married. His only concubine, he said. Your feelings didn't matter to him. Gone was the man you once loved.
He dropped his hand from your chin. He couldn’t find that same love and devotion in your eyes anymore. Did he miss it? The Emperor himself didn’t know.
“You are dismissed.” He flicked his hand.
His temper flared at how quickly you left his study. You had to keep your composure. You refused to show any sign of weakness in front of Jing Yuan, no matter how much you were aching inside.
Xinyue’s painting taunted you as you walked by it. It was beginning to get harder to not place the blame on her. None of this is her fault, you reminded yourself. She wasn’t the one you were engaged to and she wasn’t the one who suddenly broke it off. She believed he loved her, just as you believed it once.
What about you? Didn't you have a right to be angry at this young noble woman who appeared in the palace overnight?
There was no reason to fight over Jing Yuan’s affection. If he took it away so easily, it was never there to begin with.
The Cloud Knights patrolling your wing pushed your chamber doors open when you arrived.
Qingque was inside. Your lady in waiting is adjusting three boxes stacked on each other. She placed a vase of blooming flowers right beside them. She looked in your direction when the doors shut behind. A bright smile formed on her face, “My Lady!” She exclaimed loudly, careful to not bump into the table.
“What is this?” You asked.
“You received a gift all the way from Amphoreus!” She plucked an envelope from the top box. She held it out to you, “They sent flowers from here.”
“Amphoreus?” You repeated.
The wax seal on the back had the symbol of the Romance Titan. Aglaea. You examined the boxes. Qingque practically bounced on the balls of her feet. She seemed more excited about your gifts than you were. Maybe because she knew this was one you’d accept.
Jing Yuan, probably to cover whatever little guilt he might feel if he felt any at all, had been sending gifts to your chambers regularly. A cruel thing to do, you’d simply send them out to noble women, passing them off as your own.
As you carefully ripped the wax seal apart, you gave Qingque permission to open the boxes. You read the letter written in Aglaea’s elegant handwriting.
My dearest Lady (Y/N),
In my years of being a dressmaker, I have been commissioned by many different people. Each of the dresses that I have crafted are woven with love and dedication. The day you read this letter, it is an honor to present to you my own creations. These are creations that I believe are long overdue.
But, I must mention that the dresses you will find in these boxes were made at Lord Mydeimos’ request. When we returned to the land of Amphoreus, he paid a hefty amount for the finest silk and materials. He constantly came to look over my progress and made sure that they would be to your liking.
Though, after I finished and prepared for the gifts to be sent over, I asked if he wanted to write a letter or a note. He became rather shy, and said I could take care of that part as well.
I believe you’ve long ago entranced our Mydeimos with your lovely presence.
Sincerely, Aglaea.
“Look how beautiful they are!” Qingque said, holding one of the boxes in her hands. The other two were left on the table with the lids off. Any piece created by Aglaea was absolutely stunning. The dressmaker had a true talent.
You touched the white silk, soft under your fingertips. They were the toga dresses worn in Amphoreus. Aglaea’s signature style, no matter where she went. In another box was a red dress, and the other held a light blue.
So these were made at the request of Mydei. The brief interaction you had with him months ago in front of Xinyue’s portrait resurfaced. Now you were regretting the sharp tone you used. You folded the letter and tucked it into the envelope again.
“Qingque.” You placed the envelope down on the table by the flowers, “I expect to leave for Amphoreus. When I do, I would like these dresses amongst my wardrobe. In the meantime, please keep them in the boxes.”
She nodded her head, and quickly went ahead with the task to get it out of the way. Not only would you thank Mydei in person, you’d have to apologize for the way you spoke to him.

a little raven told me... masterlist
multi! twisted wonderland x reader smau
wordcount -> 2.3k
lunchtime at night raven college, you've come to realize, can be quite a chaotic mess (which can be said to pretty much all aspects of this school, in hindsight). i mean, you think you’ve reached this conclusion a long time ago, considering how long it has been since the magic mirror brought you to twisted wonderland…but, no.
this really is your life now.
it’s always something here at night raven. it could be riddle chasing down the maniacially laughing eel twin, the former’s face truly living up to the ‘rosy-red tyrant’ moniker given to him your first few days here as he chased the slightly taller of the two eel twins, floyd seemingly having the time of his life. it could also be the occasional sass thrown across, most notably whenever vil and leona are involved. while rare that they're both found in the same area during lunch, considering leona is usually napping lunchtime away in the school’s greenhouse, the quippy remarks are always a guarantee. honestly, the list can go on and on…
yeah, you love it here. genuinely. sure there've been a lot of…incidents (name: overblots), but you’ve also made really amazing friendships (as much as everyone involved denies it — night raven college really is filled with prideful students). one group of those friendships are your fellow first years.
ace, deuce, jack, epel, ortho, and sebek…and of course, grim, but you and him are essentially a no-brainer. the ‘first-year squad’, as cater had dutifully named you guys afternoon as him and trey passed by your group in the library once.
‘oh? hey, look there, trey! it’s our adeuce combi! and all the rest of the first-years. oh em gee, it’s the first-year squad! yeah, let’s get a pic for magicam, you all look totes adorbs!’ and of course, he took multiple pictures much to everyone's dismay, posting it with the appropriate hashtags and tagging everyone.
guess the nickname stuck around, as most of your guys’ seniors called your group as such. speaking of…
“prefect,” ace whined, laying his head on the lunchroom table, “please, tell me tonight is still on. riddle’s gonna make us study all night if we stay at heartslabyul…”
a loud snort came from another one of the guys at your table, his arms crossed over his chest, chin held slightly up high, “hah! perhaps it’s for the best tonight gets canceled, knowing you, ace, you need that supervision,” sebek huffed, smugly smirking as ace’s head popped up, “hah? you wanna run that by me again, sebek?”
“ace, cut it out,” deuce said, turning to his friend. “at this rate, she’s going to cancel tonight if you keep acting out like this. and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a little studying in…” the heartslabyul first-year with the spade eye makeup said, which just resulted in a snarky comeback from ace, which led to more bickering.
saved by the hypothetical bell at least— the remainder of your friends made their way to the table, having gotten stuck in their respective classes. sometimes you all would sit with different groups at lunch, but the majority of the time you all have taken to sitting together.
grim in usual grim fashion was trying to swipe everyone’s food as ‘payment’ for being late, even if he was also late. jack resulted in lecturing grim, ortho and epel were trying to catch up to whatever chaotic mess they came back to. yep, same old same old…
“say, prefect. is the sleepover at ramshackle tonight still awn?” epel asked, straightening up and glancing around to make sure his housewarden (and vice-housewarden at that) didn’t hear his slip in accent. ortho perked up, the little flame over his heart flicking just a bit, “ouu! i can bring this new multi-player game my brother and i were trying out last night!”
you nodded at your two friends, but it seems like everyone else was distracted. you cleared your throat, fist covering your mouth, “hey, guys. remember, sleepover at ramshackle today if your housewardens said yes.”
“and you have to bring a ten-can-of-tuna-entry-fee!” grim said triumphantly, standing up with one paw in the air. you quickly put your hand in front of him, pulling him down the table, “no, you do not,” you deadpanned.
“you two, cut it out! save it for spelldrive or something!” jack said, turning to the still bickering heartslabyul duo before scratching his head, “actually, that wouldn’t work. you two are in the same dorm…save it for beans day or something, just hope you get put on separate teams…” he trailed off.
“i never really understood some of the events at night raven…” you added, “i mean, from what you guys have told me, beans day sounds a little similar to something the seniors did at my school.” the guys all turned to face you:
“really? that’s pretty cool! what was that like?” ortho asked.
“well, it was this thing called senior assassin. it wasn’t school sponsored, but the seniors would all be assigned random targets either in duos or a free-for-all, depending what rules the seniors chose that year. basically, they had to ‘take out’ their targets with a water gun. there were some places of immunity like school, anywhere else they had to wear like arm floaties or goggles. it would get pretty intense,” you explained, “oh! and there was a betting pool involved from a registration fee, it could get up to three-hundred to four-hundred depending on the senior class size.”
if possible, you could definitely see thaumark signs over ace’s pupils, “heyy, we should totally do that—” he said before sebek cut him off, “no way, human! she just said it was a senior activity. either way, the great malleus would dominate in such a trivial matter if it was conducted in this school!” he boasted.
“prefect, are there any other things they did at your school?” deuce asked as epel nodded his head in agreement, “yeah! please tell us, we’d love to hear more about your world’s customs!”
you scratched your temple, “i mean, there wasn’t really much…i feel like everything is boring compared to the things done here.”
after some insistent nagging encouragement, you told them about a few things you could name off the top of your head: homecoming (the game and the dance), prom, certain club events, anything you could think of, even if much wasn’t coming to mind.
“oh! i completely forgot, this actually happened a little before i was transported here. we had an anonymous confessions account.”
most of the guys tilted their heads, “an anonymous what…?” ace asked, raising his brow.
you clapped your hand, “okay, so, basically, someone made an account on our social media, think of it like magicam. people would send in anything. think confessions, rumors, complaints, dating attempts, shit-talking, you name it, someone probably sent it in. the account would post these, most of the time people chose to stay anonymous but some people would put their names, or frame others.”
“did nobody find out who it was behind the account?” ortho asked, suddenly a lot more invested with the whole mystery.
shaking your head, you responded, “nope. not that i’m aware of, at least. it was the most recent thing happening before the black carriage ran me over on my way home one night.”
“i’ll say…that must’a gotten around real quick,” epel said while deuce nodded his head
“what a bunch of cowards,” jack said, shaking his head and crossing his arms over his chest, “if they had a problem with each other, no better way then to say it straight to the face, why hide behind—”
“I COMPLETELY AGREE, JACK!” sebek shouted, startling not only your table, but alerting most of the lunch area, “WHAT COWARDLY BEHAVIOR, ONLY FOOLS WOULD HIDE BEHIND AN ANONYMOUS ACCOUNT TO SPEW RUMOR AND NONSENSE OF OTHERS.”
…right…
“talk about passionate…” deuce said, his eyes darting around the lunch area. honestly, you could feel a lot of familiar eyes staring right at you guys…“by the seven, sebek, you’re loud as hell.” ace sighed, shaking his head.
“I AM NOT!”
“buddy…” grim shook his head, and some of you laughed it off. lunch wrapped up quick after that and you all planned to see each other later at ramshackle.
sleepovers at ramshackle were…chaotic to say the least. imagine: you’re putting eight of night raven college’s notorious troublemakers unfortunately-involved-in-conflict students in a room for a night, with no ‘true’ housewarden supervision as you’re acting head (and let’s be honest, you enjoy most of it). you can imagine.
except its not that bad. swear on grims tuna!
at least tonight, it’s been pretty chill. grim is obviously swiping all of the snacks the others had brought, ortho true to his word brought a video game for everyone to enjoy along with some board games. there genuinely was an intention to do some studying, but ace said, and quote, ‘we are not doing grandma activities at grandma hour!’
card games was a huge thing for you guys, even the early sleepers jack and sebek would stay wide away for your guys’ tournaments. sometimes it was spoons, other times it was bullshit, occasionally it was a big spit tournament, and recently, uno got banned from the ramshackle household for the foreseeable future as a certain someone broke furniture last time and you were not having it.
tonight, it was a match of spoons. strangely enough, deuce was knocked out of the competition first round, much to his dismay and much to grim’s contentment, as it was usually the little feline that got knocked out first round due to not being able to reach fast enough (even when given the ‘you can sit closer to the spoons’ advantage).
sebek proudly held up a bent metal spoon as he took ace out of the second to last round, leaving him and ortho as the final two. you can add this to the growing pile of ‘spoons that have been bent due to the first-year squad™’ “alright, that’s enough. it’s BYOS—bring your own spoons— next time!” you sighed, quietly mourning your metal spoon.
grim snickered, “hey, deuce, since you lost the first round, you need to bring the replacement spoon. off you go, my little lackey!”
as ace begrudgingly shuffled the deck, everyone looked over at deuce who had…fallen asleep? he was slumped over the coffee table, his phone laid next to him, quietly snoring. “it is not sleeptime! even jack and sebek are still awake.”
epel shrugged, looking at everyone, “he’s prolly just tired. get a picture though.” ortho was quick to snap a few pics at nice angles. he went over to ace, and they shared a look, the look.
“hey, maybe we should move him—” jack said, starting to push up from the floor to move his sleep-ridden friend, but ortho hovered over, silently cackling behind his hand as he blocked jack’s route.
ace straighted up, clearing his throat, “wow guys! i suuuuree am happy we studied for that extra hard exam we have tomorrow for history of magic! i would hate to be sleeping…this exam is worth half our final grade!” ace said, enunciating certain words as he held his phone, the camera pointed towards his friend.
seemingly, some words got through to your dear friend, as deuce shot his head up, hair already in dismay as he frantically looked around the room, “no way! i can’t afford to fail, then i really won’t be an honors student!” he panicked, grabbing the nearest book, frantically skimming through it.
“hey, loosey-deucy~” ace called out, “look over here!”
before deuce could even react, a flash of light blinded him, his eyes wide as he had yet to register what was going on.
“pfft—” grim laughed, covering his mouth with his paw. “deuce, you idiot!”
you sighed, shaking your head. one of your hands reached your temple, rubbing small circles at your friends. you looked around, at least hoping someone was taking this a little more seriously, but you couldn’t help but start laughing alongside everyone. hell, if sebek and jack were stifling laughs, that just told you it was funny.
“awe man, i’m gonna bust a gut!” ace hollered, holding his phone away as he rapidly started tapping his screen, trying to keep it away from his now angered friend. deuce angrily gritted, getting up to go after ace, but ortho came and held him back.
seven phone notifications went off at the same time in the living room as ace happily tossed his phone to the side. his bubble of happiness soon popped as deuce finally got past ortho and was shaking ace by his collar. of course, ortho recorded that. you looked down at the notification you got on your phone, it was from magicam:
ace_trappola_ tagged you in a story.
before you could open the notification, epel elbowed your arm, tears in his eyes from his laughter as he showed you the post:
(please click, it’s a video)
eventually, everyone settled down — kinda. at least there were no more casualties in the form of spoons (for now). as per usual, sebek and jack called it earlier than the rest of you, sebek sitting up every few minutes to lowly, “SHH. CEASE YOUR CHATTER!” which got him a pillowfull from jack the last time around.
everyone finally settled for bed, everyone was accounted for, except for one sneaky heartslabyul first-year that probably went to the bathroom. the living room was dark, except for the moonlight filtering in through the window. nights like these really made being transported to twisted wonderland worth it…
except there was a small led light that turned on, you flipped to the side to see epel on his phone, “you okay, epel…?”
“oh! yeah, everything’s good. i’m just makin’ sure vil doesn’t know how late i‘m stayn’ up. he’ll really have my head,” epel said quietly, locking his screen, giving you a quiet goodnight.
right before you drifted off to sleep, you felt your phone vibrate. you grabbed it from underneath your pillow and dismissed the spam email. however, you noticed you had missed a notification from magicam, when did that come in…?
nrc.confessionz started following you.
previous: promo post <- masterlist -> next: a bald accusation (to be posted).

note: i’m ngl ive had that smau post of deuce done for a week and i giggle everytime i watch it again i hope you guys find it funny :( first twst writing WOOO im so hype.
check out the promo post to see how you can be involved in the story!
ok i saw a thread of people explaining the story behind their URLs, so i wanted to hop on and explain my URLs. tagging @andromeda-nova-writing @mimi-cee-genshin @perpetualcynicism @woofwoofwolf @strxnged @nenjuu / @andersdotters @akimind @dkniade
no pressure!!
milkstore -> i really love milk. i like the image of my blog 'selling' bottles of milk. it is a metaphor for sharing things i really like.
thomine -> although it's just thoma + mine, the reason why i wanted to merge 'mine' with his name was because of the lyrics "you weren't mine to lose" from taylor swift's song, august.
malovedaptive -> i found the term 'maladaptive' through maladaptive daydreaming. added 'love' to spice it up. (ultimately, unhealthy or not, it was an adaptation to survive and i'd say there is love within the will to survive.)
firestun -> fire (lighter's element) + stun (lighter's type).
shoyosh -> a play on shoyo and the 'yosh' noise he likes to make. also 'yosh' as a onomatopoeia whenever he gets the zoomies.
xiayz -> yizhou is caleb's chinese name. i thought it was funny that if you abbreviate his full name, it is just xyz. xyz is not available as a URL and wont make sense so i used his surname bc i like summer.
the ‘cynicism’ of ‘perpetualcynicism’ was a pun on cyno’s name as well as my own somewhat cynical outlook, and the ‘perpetual’ was partially meaningful — it worked doubly as ‘perpetually a cyno blog’ (…this did not turn out to be the case) and ‘i will always be cynical’ — but mostly the word just… sounds quite nice, i think. like, say the word ‘perpetual’ out loud right now. it rolls off the tongue really nicely, right? and then add the fricative s’s and alliteration of ‘cynicism’ to the plosive alliteration of ‘perpetual’… again, i think it sounds quite nice aloud as whole. which i guess is slightly ironic, considering it’s a tumblr url which few people will ever say out loud, but that’s not the point.
‘cynicalmusings’ came about first because i wanted continuity between the two blogs, i.e. for it to be obvious enough that they’re linked and run by the same person, hence the carrying over of cynicism (plus the cyno aspect of it, rather than ‘perpetualmusings’), and ‘musings’ because this blog is a place where i kind of just type down my thoughts as they come — and ‘musings’, again, sounds nicer as a world out loud then, say, ‘thoughts’ or ‘pondering’ or whatever.
for the sake of continuing the thread… here are a few i’m curious about: @kopivie, @daosies, @nvuy
R!! thank you so much for the tag (❁´◡`❁) i am a little ashamed to say this but my url really has no deep meaning other than the fact that i like the word "dao" (it's a peach blossom!) and i wanted to incorporate it into my user somehow ... and then daosies came to me in a dream (✿◡‿◡)
CONTINUING THE THREAD!!! @1eaf-me-alone , @melodead , @aquatik
DAOOO thanks for the tag teehee <3 kinda like dao said, mine isn’t that meaningful but i can also talk about my old urls
- this account was always my writing one, the ‘main’ (@aquatikk) used to be called ‘humanitiesbiggestsimp’ i was huuuuge into aot when i first made my acc hence the levi ref
- then i wanted to write but i didn’t want that change/lose that user so i made a side blog (this one) that was originally called oii-sugasan, i was really really into haikyuu (fun fact, i started as a haikyuu writer)
- eventually i grew out of that (rip my shawty baes) and IF YOU COULDNT TELL i love marine bio :)) so it was between aquatik or ocqanic (which fun fact i have that as a side blog in case i ever wanted to change it LMFAO) hence aquatik was born <3
- i use this acc as my main, but the ‘main’ blog is aquatikk (two k’s) to show less superiority LMFOA
anyways i’ll tag stink bc dao tagged me first and all my other tumblr friends have vacated 🙂↕️ @yyuangss @yyuangss-main
stink tagged me so imma do this but i ain’t got no one else to tag it’s about to end here 💀 gonna do the same
— real ones know my main acc’s first user was toorusushijima and it was simply bc i thought oikawa & ushijima content was mad funny
— lovely—josuke was THE era <3 it was bc he was, if not is, my favorite jojo character (real ones also remember i was lovely—jiraiya for .2 seconds to get on vale’s nerves).
— yyuangss is for jing yuan <3333 vale came up with it
★ ⸻ the only good thing that came out of that stupid slumbernana monkey quest was that boothill got flustered after getting a compliment and i will make a fic out of it 🫡

drops everything to come and see you, a very impromptu visit. he doesn’t care, as soon as the thought of missing you comes into his mind, he needs to see you at that very moment. everyone hates him for it because it’ll be at some of the worst times possible. yes, they complain to him about it. does that mean he’ll stop doing it? no. he’ll just laugh it off. you’re more important to him than anything else and that’s all that matters. whatever he was doing, he can put it off for tomorrow. well, maybe not tomorrow because he’ll want to see you then too. so not tomorrow, but the day after… maybe.
jing yuan, aventurine, gallagher, boothill, luka !
he’ll make plans to be with you. usually happens whenever you guys spend too much time apart. as soon as those plans are made, nothing is going to come between him and spending time with you. he will make sure everyone knows he’s going to be with you on a certain day by saying it whenever he gets the chance. all other events get rescheduled or canceled to fit around your set date. that’s how serious he is. it’s his way of expressing how he’s looking forward to seeing you and getting to be around you again.
dan heng, welt yang, gepard, blade, luocha, dr. ratio, argenti, sunday, jiaoqiu, moze !
you’ll get spammed with voice messages. when you decide to listen to them, he’s just horribly singing kiss me thru the phone by soulja boy.

inazuman winters tend to cover the towns in thick veils of pristine white snow, the sky up above a deeper gray; one could say it was a similar shade to months back when the archon issued the sakoku decree. winter time was just another cold reminder of how it used to be. keyword: it.
the naku weed glowed that much brighter - the leaves of the sakura trees seemed more vibrant - even the amakumo fruit tastes sweeter. ever since the decree lifted, everything seemed to fall back into place.
most of all; winter in inazuma was a stark contrast to its warm, sunny counterpart. at least this year, the streets are filled with decorative lights, the laughter of children, and the remembrance of old holiday traditions. some elders even whispered throughout the streets that there might be a chance of snowfall.
“old wives tale,” you muttered. but you couldn’t deny it was a chiller morning than usual. your blinds were pulled in, so you couldn’t exactly see the outdoors. but it couldn’t be, no?
taking yourself away from the warm spot by the heated stove, reluctant of course, you made your way to your front door, your warm beverage in hand. stepping even a foot away, you missed the warmth, but you couldn’t deny the increased coldness as you walked through your home, especially the freezing sensation when you laid your hand on the doorknob.
cracking the door open, you couldn’t believe it, was it really—
well, not like you could see. considering a sudden ball struck your face, cold, cold, very cold. as it slowly slid off your face, covering your lashes in a thick sheet of ice— ah yes, snow. landing straight into your delectably warm drink with a loud plop.
a vibrant, exuberant laugh filled your surrounding area, maybe it was the fact your eyelids were shut that your ears picked up on the sound louder and quicker. but you knew, you didn’t need to open your eyes to know who it was.
“WOO!” followed soon after, continued with more laughter, “babe, babe! it really is snowfall! look, look. see? i even made a snowball!” your boyfriend - the self-proclaimed one-and-oni arataki itto; head of the arataki gang was at your front door.
who threw a snowball in your face.
“itto.” you muttered, your eyes still closed shut as you heard him walking towards you, his shoes squeaking against the apparent snow you have yet to see.
“yeeeesss?” he responded in a higher-pitched voice. it was louder, so you could only assume - granted with the footsteps - he was now standing in front of you.
you sighed, taking your free hand to wipe the remaining snow that had yet to melt off your eyelids. “did you just throw a snowball at me?” you muttered, opening your eyes. at least you opened them at a good time to see itto’s expression fall from excitement to realization, seemingly needed for you to verbally communicate what he did.
“i-i. well. you see,” he laughed, starting to shake his hands in front of you. “it wasn’t meant for your face, i swear! it was meant for the…the door!” he pointed, then quickly got to dusting off the snow that had fallen on your shoulders, coincidentally falling into your mug.
“it’s not scalding hot, it should’ve cooled down. it should be cool by now, should be cool by now—“ you contemplated, looking down at the snow covering your previous warm beverage, wondering if you should throw it at itto.
“oh, hey! now it looks like it has whipped cream in there—“
yeah. you threw the drink at him.
“itto, why are you cold!” you hissed as he put his hand over yours that was warmly tucked into your jacket’s pocket. not like you’d tell him to move it though
“because you banished me outside!” he argued back. “you left me out in the cold. how could you be so heartless,” he sighed dramatically.
if your hands weren’t so cold, you’d rub your nose. instead, you compromise with a sigh, “because you threw a snowball at me.” you mumbled, but moved the hand in your pocket to hold his, the former immediately grinning at you, squeezing your hand.
“pfft, forgive and forget,” he laughed off pulling your now intertwined hands out of your jacket pocket to drag you towards the town.
“you really shouldn’t run,” you tried to argue, but when did he ever listen. it wasn’t like your place was far from town - it could have been a nice simple walk instead of a marathon run.
but oh no, karma had other plans.
as itto graciously proceeds to drag you, ignoring all protests especially the ones that involved the words ‘stop!’ or ‘slow down!’
of course he wouldn’t notice he was running straight through a sheet of ice he would inevitably slip on. and of course he’s going to slip, and fall, and take you down with him. and of course he is going to take that fall undoubtedly yelling for all of inazuma to hear.
at least your fall wasn’t too bad, but when you turned to see him, of course his tongue got conveniently stuck onto a poll.
you tried to warn him. you really did.
“ah vittle healp hear?” he tried to speak his best, but it wasn’t like he could properly pronounce his words when his tongue was getting frozen onto a pole. he tried to pull it back, but that was a no go.
“let me go get some hot water,” you sighed, starting to walk back towards your place.
sure you were going to get some hot water, but there was no way you weren’t going to also grab your kamera.
one thing about the winter time in inazuma, it gets dark very quickly, and even colder than when the sun was out. you know what excuse that made for though? a good-old-fashioned fire pit.
itto led you through the streets of the town - making sure not to slip on more ice and risk yet another picture - but uncharacteristically stopped his quick-paced movements when you both reached the lit-up portions of town.
it was beautiful to say the least. houses decorated with colorful lights, the children running around playing with each other, neighbors conversing between each other - it was like your small town was brought back to life.
your favorite had to be itto running around with the children though, playing along with them. if you didn’t know any better, or if he wasn’t so tall, you’d think he’s one of them. of course he made sure everyone was included: that’s just the man he is.
eventually when he had his fill, he comes back around to you, his nose and cheeks dusted in a rosy color, definitely from the cold. he grinned at you as you redid his scarf. would he usually protest against such frivolous manners? yes, but not when it came from you.
“you’re cold.” you stated the obvious.
“i feel warmer already, ‘cause i’m with you.” he said so simply, with no need to think.
maybe you were the one that got warmer, because you couldn’t deny the warmth filling your cheeks, and he sure wasn’t going to let you live that down.
eventually you’ll make it to the campfire in the middle of the town. eventually. but hey, you made it! sure, it took a few detours, like itto finding his ‘new champion’, but you also got a pretty sakura bloom out of it, gently resting in your hair where itto placed it.
you sighed, taking in the nice, toasty warmth from the fire. surely you’d smell like the smoke, but you wouldn’t, no, couldn’t trade this moment. especially not when you can see your boyfriend running over with two sticks, a marshmallow on each end.
itto was a lot of things, a good companion, a goofball sole would say, an amazing lover to you, but you did not expect him to be that good at roasting marshmallows. perfectly golden, soft, and warm. you on the other hand? not so good at it. well, clearly. could you even call that a marshmallow when it resembles a lump of coal?
if you knew any better, you’d think the two girls over on the other side of the fire were laughing at your attempt of roasting a marshmallow, but something told you it had less to do with you and more to do with the woman in the long, brown skirt trying to knock the ball away from the woman in glasses.
but like you said, itto was a lot of things. of course he would give you his perfectly roasted marshmallow and take your…marshmallow. all with his perfect grin as he assembled the s’more. never once complaining, giving you a toothy smile.
“this is soo good…!” he exclaimed. you had to wipe the corner of his lip that was filled with chocolate, and he takes the opportunity to snag a kiss to your hand.
that was just the type of man he was.
but sadly, you had your responsibilities
of course you complained on the walk back to your place - you’d much rather stay with him. but you had to do what you had to do. so you both - reluctantly - parted ways one he dropped you off. and while yes, itto could’ve spent some time with you, you knew you’d get quickly distracted. it was impossible not to!
time passed, and you couldn’t help but hear a sudden thud against your door. and again. and again. you walked over to your door, cautiously opening it. seemed like you weren’t the only cautious one, as itto had his hand winded back, hesitantly with a snowball.
“you better not—“ you started, looking at the pile of snow by your door. you heard the soft thud of the snowball falling behind him. now this gave you the chance to see him and his gang, minus shinobu, decked out in holiday attire, with crumbled papers in their hands.
“ahem. the one and oni arataki gang shall now bless you with these carols!” he announced, turning to act like a conductor with no sense of direction, just waving his hands.
“ah, one; ah, two; ah, one, two, three—“ he counted, before you heard the most off key rendition of ‘deck the halls,’ you've ever heard. i mean, half of them weren’t even on beat.
still made you smile though. especially when itto hit an operatic finally, reciting, “fa la la la la, la la la la,” shoving his members away to not take away from his big moment. he walked over to hug you, well, more like try to carry you to join them in caroling, much to your protest.
maybe you could just try conducting, just this once. you know, some supervision. the thing you were doing could wait.
you two hung back as you all walked to the next house. you looked up at him as he grinned, and you knew that expression - he was up to something.
he grinned as he pulled a smushed mistletoe out from his pocket. the berries matching the red in his hair, honestly, it was kinda romantic. “m’lady,” he grinned, wiggling his eyebrows.
you sighed, sarcastically rolling yours eyes. but you did lean up to kiss his cheek, “nice try, lover boy.” you teased with a grin as he whined, claiming ‘that’s not how it’s done.’ and how his ‘great onikabuto queen has betrayed him.’
yeah, that one got him a snowball to the back of his head. to which eventually, you both didn’t make it to the next house, instead throwing snow at each other, enjoying the laughter filling the air.
this may have been the first year in which inazuma finally seemed lively for the holidays in a long time, but it was also your first holiday season with your boyfriend. and something tells you, regardless of the things around you, itto would’ve made this time the most memorable of all.
glass bottle message -> this had to be the hardest thing to pull off ever guys omg, kat always reads my stuff beforehand and I couldn't ask her for ANYTHING. anyways stink I have a documentary of me trying to pull this heist off. I hope you all enjoyed, happy holidays! <3

TAGS ! royal + secret lovers au ; general cyno x concubine reader, brief mentioning of emperor rex lapis x concubine reader ; ningguang is the empress, but that does not mean i ship them ; teyvat is the entire empire, regions are divided ; not proofread, bear with me y’all 💔 ; yes i based it off another romeo santos song 🗣️‼️
You always think about the first time you met him whenever you see him. Even now, when his gaze is fixated on you from across the ballroom as you sit on a large cushion by the Emperor’s side.
Today is the Emperor's birthday and this year, he decided to host a ball to celebrate. He sits on his throne. His wife, the Empress, is sitting beside him on her own throne.
Your left hand is being held by the Emperor. His thumb is pressed against the ring you’re wearing on your middle finger. It isn’t any common ring. It is a gold band with cor lapis as the setting stone. The jewel had the Geo elemental symbol carved into it. That same ring is given to all of the concubines as their first gift and it is required to be worn by them at all times.
Around your wrist is a corsage. A glaze lily to be exact. It’s the same color as your dress which has a lot of resemblance to the flower itself. It matched beautifully, at least that’s what anyone else would assume you’re wearing it for.
You were selected to be the newest concubine of the Emperor by his retainers nearly a year and a half ago. Every so often, he takes on a new concubine from a different region.
There were obviously many rules before coming into this life. But the most important one is that no concubine was allowed to have their own lover. That was the most crucial rule every concubine knew not to break. The Emperor was a possessive man who refused to share any of his lovers.
It was the turn of the Land of Natlan to present a fine selection of women when you were chosen. They all decided you were the best option and the Emperor would be pleased at their selection.
They were right. Shortly after, you became his favorite and Emperor Rex Lapis was infatuated with you. He lavished you with riches. Expensive jewelry, dresses, shoes. Majority of the other concubines were very jealous. Some held onto the false promises he made to them.
It bothers you a lot to receive this type of treatment. It’s hard to deal with not only the concubines taking a disliking towards you, but the Empress too. Where he used to only have the Empress at his side, he now brings you along as well.
For example, he made accommodations prior to the ball so you could be sitting next to him.
Rex Lapis let go of your hand. He stood up from his throne, tilting his head to look down at you. He gave you a curt nod which was his way of giving you permission to join the guests of the ball and socialize amongst them. He turned to The Empress and she quickly understood without him having to say a single word.
The Empress stood up from her chair, linking her arm with her husband. She held her head up high, refusing to spare you a second glance. The action only made you sigh as you watched the two of them maneuver through the guests. Of course she didn’t like any of the concubines. She had no reason to. But she disliked you the most. She saw you as competition for her husband’s attention and desire.
There were so many times you simply wanted to tell Empress Ningguang you had no interest in her husband besides what your duties in the palace were.
Your gaze wandered back to a certain someone in the crowd. His distinct headpiece made it easier to find him. His attention isn't on you at the moment, rather the men he’s currently speaking to. The last thing you two wanted was to make things obvious.
You wished you could proclaim to the entire empire who your lover was.
General Cyno of Sumeru.
He was part of the The Seven Generals of Teyvat. One came from each region and were chosen by the Emperor himself. They were meant to act as not only leaders, but representatives of the Emperor in their respective regions. They held more power in their homelands in comparison to when they were in Liyue.
The other six were General Xiao of Liyue, often considered the favorite of the Emperor, General Diluc of Mondstadt, General Ayato of Inazuma, General Wriothesley of Fontaine, General Ororon of Natlan, and General Ajax of Snezhnaya.
They were ordered to reside in the Palace of Liyue and rarely ever returned to their homelands unless given permission. You had seen them walking around the palace. At the time of your arrival, the only ones you had never met before were General Cyno and General Ororon.
Cyno had his own reasons. Sumeru had been in a civil war for nearly two years and the Emperor had him handling those matters on his behalf. When everything had been settled, the General was allowed to return to the Palace of Liyue. He was gone for nearly the same amount of time you had been a concubine. Interesting how life works. The very first day he came back to Liyue after the civil war of his home region is when you met him.
You stood up from the cushion, patting down your dress. Rex Lapis and Lady Ningguang were entertained with a few royal guests. It was enough time for you to slip away from the Emperor’s mind. He wouldn’t be thinking about you for the next hour or so.
You held both of your hands together in front of you and began to approach the lively crowd. A hand raised up in the air, waving to get your attention. The bright lights reflected off a gold ring, a carbon copy of the one you’re wearing. Your eyes lit up once you saw the two other recognizable faces you were searching for.
Nilou and Yoimiya, concubines of the Emperor. They’re part of the very few who weren’t, and still aren’t, jealous of the Emperor favoring you. You lean more into gathering with them because of their kind and outgoing personalities. And as much as you wanted to approach the General of Sumeru, you knew you needed to wait.
“Oh, you look so beautiful!” Nilou exclaimed once you were close enough.
“Thank you,” You flashed her a smile, eagerly greeting them both with a hug. “You two look really beautiful too.”
“Not compared to you!” Yoimiya said as you both pulled away from the embrace. “Your dress even feels like it’s made out of real glaze lilies.” She gasped when she noticed the corsage on your wrist, immediately reaching for your hand.
They continued to admire your dress for tonight’s occasion, gushing about how the color suited you and how only you could pull this look off amongst the concubines. You glanced out of the corner of your eye as Nilou and Yoimiya continued to chat about your dress to each other.
A few groups away, Cyno was with Ayato, Diluc, and Wriothesley. You could barely hear what they were talking about. Just the faint sound of General Ayato’s voice overlapping with the many other guests in the ballroom. He was listening intently like the other two with a drink in his hand. All four Generals were rather relaxed given the occasion.
He must have sensed you staring at him, because Cyno’s visible eye flicked away from his companions. Your gaze met his. It made your heart pound in your chest. Both of your hearts at that. He wanted to go over to you at that very moment but he knew the consequences. It was too early and could possibly gather unwanted attention.
It’s why it became easier to communicate with him at a distance and not have to say any words at all.
You adjusted the necklace you were wearing with your left hand. Although it was an innocent action, Cyno’s lips formed a small smile when he saw the corsage. Glaze lilies held a different meaning for the both of you. Not a single soul, besides you two, would know the significance. It was a symbol of your love, hidden in plain sight.
An unfortunate love so strong, that could never be revealed.
“Pardon me,”
You turn around, breath hitching in your chest. You forced yourself to keep the smile that wanted to appear on your face hidden.
Cyno stood behind you. He held out one hand while the other was behind his back. He was bowing in your presence. He tilted his head up slightly to look up at you. He still had that faint smile from earlier before when he first saw the corsage on your wrist.
“May I have this dance?” He asked. You couldn’t help but laugh softly. You did tell him you liked it whenever he acted chivalrous.
“You may.” Despite trying to remain serious, since it was very risky to approach you while the Emperor was around, the smile on his face widened at your answer. Cyno tenderly took your left hand in his, standing up straight. He’d like to forget about the ring on your middle finger and focus completely on the glaze lily corsage you have on.
He guided you towards the center of the ballroom where many other couples were already dancing. He never once let go of your left hand and he gently pulled you to stand in front of him. He placed his other hand on your waist. Your hand was on his shoulder and he took the lead.
It felt surreal to be this close to him in public. The only times you could be like this were during the late meetings in the palace gardens. Cyno wanted to bring you closer, but he knew better than to push his luck. Emperor Rex Lapis might be entertaining himself with his guests, that didn’t mean he wasn’t fully unaware of what his favorite concubine was doing.
Nothing was said as you continued dancing to the live orchestra. You watched as his eye wandered around, taking in your appearance again. All the concubines were elegantly dressed to appeal to the Emperor. Except that corsage and what your dress resembled was a dead giveaway to Cyno who you were trying to appeal to tonight.
Him.
“You’re divine, my lady.” He whispered. He’d made you flustered with his compliment. Ten months into this forbidden romance and you continued to shy away. Cyno glanced over briefly to locate where the Emperor was at. Rex Lapis still had Lady Ningguang at his side. He was speaking with Lord Neuvillette, mending an old friendship that had been broken decades ago. “After this dance is over, let’s go into the hallway.”
“Alright,” You agreed, keeping your voice low. You didn’t want anyone else hearing your plans to get away from the crowd.
For now, you just enjoyed being able to dance with him for the time being. It was rare you two ever got these moments out in public. To everyone else, it seemed very normal. The concubines weren’t technically forbidden from speaking to men.
When the orchestra finished, the couples stepping from each other briefly to clap. Cyno took this opportunity to slip out of the ballroom with you. He intertwined his fingers with yours, discreetly weaving through the royals and nobles. You two had made it to one of the several sets of large doors leading into the ballroom. People were preoccupied with their conversations or dancing, that no one saw you two exit.
The hallways were empty. Everyone was inside of the ballroom, including the guards that patrolled the inside of the palace. They were making quite the commotion being for the Emperor’s birthday. But he wasn’t dumb enough to expose the two of you right outside. Instead, he continued to delve deeper into the intricate hallways of Liyue's palace.
Once he believed you were at a safer location, the first thing he did was wrap his arms tightly around your shoulders. His hand was on the back of your head, pressing you closer to him and he buried his face into the crook of your neck. You instinctively wrapped your arms around his torso.
He sighed against your skin. He was content being able to hold you in his arms. But if it were up to him, he would prefer to be able to hold you whenever he’d like and whenever he’d like. He lifted his head up to look at you.
“I don’t know how much longer of this I’ll be able to take.” Cyno muttered. He brought one of his hands to your face. His thumb caressed your cheek tenderly as he held onto it. You leaned into his touch, the palm of his hand pressed against your cheek.
“I don’t either.” You whispered. The warmth of your hands on his bare back was comforting to him. “Do you think we might ever be able to tell the Emperor of our love?”
“No. Not right now, at least… He treats you more like his wife than the Empress herself.” Cyno shook his head. In his honest opinion, he didn’t see it happening anytime soon. His expression became more serious and he moved a little closer towards you. “But that doesn’t mean I’m giving up hope on us.”
You exhaled at his answer. He wasn’t wrong. It was getting increasingly harder to sneak around without Emperor Rex Lapis finding out. You had been his favorite concubine for far too long now and he was showing no signs of getting bored of you. Many of the concubines said you’d only last a few months in this position.
Cyno saw the way you reacted to his words and the last thing he wanted was to ruin the mood. He cradled your face with both of his hands. He lifted your head up slightly. You immediately knew what he was asking for and you nodded. He leaned down, meeting your lips in a gentle kiss.
“I promise.” He said softly, “One day, we’ll be able to tell the entire Seven Regions of our love. And when that happens, we’ll leave for Sumeru to start our life. Together.”
