I got sooooo many thoughts on my first reading of Legendborn. I was so confused half the time cause my memory is shit and I kept having to look at the wiki at what a scion or page or god forbid a Merlin is but it did not dampen my fun. so here is a summary:
1. I love Bree Matthew’s. I think she is so cool and also, hilarious. I could FEEL her bitterness and pain and I wanted to just like, man, I just really wanted her to feel better. She was going THROUGH it. Racism, sexism, death, whatever Selwyn was doing, etc. god. 😭 she is so much better than me. The fact she didn’t slip up in front of anyone and blow her cover is wild. I got to give her credit, she is so determined.
2. The way Tracy Deonne frames The Order (I forgot the name. Just like the larger organization) in like a colonialist and white supremacist lens is OOHHHGGGGH ITS SO GOOD. FUCK nicks dad, oh my god. Like every instance where Bree was with the organization, it was hammered with racist southern history. As someone who lives in NC and whose mom goes to UNC; yeah. Accurate.
ALSO OOOO THE ROOTCRAFT. I’m really in love with like this concept of magic in this world and two organizations (or two systems??) using it differently and calling it different things. Especially how Root craft seems to be resembling like African traditional religions or something like that. All in all, I’m just really interested.
3. I HATED Selwyn. I wanted to wrangle his puny ass neck LIKE RAGGHCUVBI SHUT UP SHES NOT A DEMON SHES
Unfortunately, I warmed up to him 😐 I think he’s just lowkey paranoid constantly. But I’m on the second book and where I’m out, he’s now arrested which sucks.
4. I LOVE Nick. I think he needs intense therapy (they all do) and maybe a lot of tea. But mannnn the way he was ready to drop everything for Bree and UGHHHXUUFIV THE REVEAL THAT SHES THE KING AND HES THE KNOGHT UGHHHIVV IM GONNS GO FERAL. Guys…😭😭😭 his dad sucks also. Currently he’s still kidnapped where im at in the second book. SOMEONE SAVE HIM. HELP THIS BOY. God and his dad is so racist and sexist, I just ughhh. I hate his dad. His little monologue at the end of book 1 was punctuated by me screaming internally. What a traditionalist.
5. I really loved the twist of Bree being a Scion of Arthur. I’m still getting the hang of the rankings and system of the order so I was lowkey lost like the first half of the book. It’s clear this had a lot of thought though. Anyways BREE 🌞🌞🌞 I hope she’ll be okay in the second book (well she’s not. She’s getting her mind mesmered repeatedly.) the fact she has like two different people within her also has got to be stressful. Arthur and Vera (Vara?). The fact her mom was a separate magic user and the car accident WAS an accident. Man. ALSO HER MOM KNEW SELWYNS MOM?? APPARENTLY VERY WELL???
I also loved the Evan twist. I really should’ve seen that coming 😭😭 I was too busy raging at Selwyn
6. I’m a William supporter 🙌🙌🙌 he was an OG supporter of Bree and I’d love to see more of him. I also love the fact Alice slipped through the order by just saying she was a Vassal. Like wow. That easy huh?? Yall aren’t asking any questions???
I hope Bree will live a long life and I KNOW that she technically can’t but whatever guys I’m still grappling with this very intense magic system. 😭😭😭
