[Platform Decay Spoilers]
In the world of Murderbot, humans from the corporation rim that we've been introduced to have been almost exclusively either people who enact mindless violence onto those with less power for profit or people who are the victims of this brutality. Humans victimized by the corporate rim have been almost totally powerless in their circumstances, needing Murderbot or the non-corporate PSUMNT crew to save them when possible. We're constantly hearing Mb recall all the horrors humans do to each other in the corporate rim.
(The only display of unselfish humanity we've seen from corporates may be in Exit Strategy when faceless human security management sounded the alarms early to give humans in the port more time to evacuate and then opened the door to let Mensa escape)
But in Platform Decay we actually get to see humans in the corporate rim resisting their circumstances and helping each other!
At the beginning we see indentured workers secretly watching a stream of a corporate management meeting. Leonide died in a desperate play to save her loved ones. Security was stationed at the entrance to a zone where corporates were fighting in order to warn travelers. People organized into a militia in order to protect themselves from corporate violence!
Even small displays of humanity, like the boat passengers recognizing Mb's intention to hold off corporates with the militia and pulling it out of the water; Mb noting how bystanders wouldn't excuse seemingly random acts of violence on the street.
I love the furthur exploration of humanity and society in the corporate rim!
murderbot queueing up a bunch of kid shows and art is like ????? where is my world hoppers?? and murderbot just really quietly says "tula was sad i didnt know who Glibby Glob was and it dropped my performance reliability by eight percent" and art's like well can't have that i guess. hit play
That's a big boy right here. Vent post I did a while ago, finally felt the courage to post it I hope it'll reach the people who needed to read this. Edit: Took my sweet time to do it, because I kept forgetting- But the original comic that inspired this one has been found! Thank you very much!
My 4yo: *points to the label on my tea bag* what does that say?
Me: it says âover 300 years of experienceâ. It means the people at twinings have been making tea for 300 hundred years.
Her: *dramatic gasp* they havenât even died?!
Me: *whispering* tea vampiresâŠ
Immortalitea.
You may live forever, but there is a steep cost.
Rereading all systems red and the first 2 chapters are strong contenders for funniest intro to a book series. Jumping straight to action, and mb is giving us absolutely no info about anything. Who are those people? Some weird hippies it's not important. Why are they here? Mb does not give a shit. What is this planet? Fuck if it knows. Here is a small paragraph that fucking states everyone's relationship status like a wiki article that we are never gonna get back to. Ugh there are hostiles that keep us away from our media #our media.
Platform Decay posting now that I've finally got to spend time in the tags
Murderbot has in fact freed other secunits before. Multiple times. Do not forget that. But also one time it offered and the combat unit was like I ACTIVELY WANT TO MURDER THE FUCK OUT OF YOU. So. It's cautious.
Three is doing something so developmentally important here. It's NOT just that Three knows it has a team to fall back on if it gets into trouble with the baddies, it's also that Three has figured out it can get in trouble with it's own side and that's ok. It's not thrilled to have pissed off ART but it did it anyways! It now knows it can be in trouble and not get tortured or disassembled over it! It did something it wasn't supposed to and then came home to the people who would be mad about it, even though it didn't have to! It could have run off to keep doing it's own thing but didn't.
I love that Murderbot's POV is so limited because it just only cares about it's own missions. If we hear in 2 books from now about how every SecUnit in the Torus deserted their post and have colonized a moon together or something somewhere Murderbot would just be like "huh". Like there would be an emotion check about it but it's not going to stop it's soap operas for more than 3 minutes about it.
I know the idea of the rogue unit that approached Murderbot recognizing Murderbot as the originator of the code is hilarious, but also, let us consider that if it doesn't recognize Murderbot as the originator of the code that unit is gonna get such a weird view of the world. Like sometimes you live your whole life in shackles and then somebody breaks them for you and you run around and the next SecUnit you run into is already free. You'd have to wonder, then, if freedom is far more normal than you'd realized. And you'd have to think- these free units are doing ok. Maybe I can also be ok. Also, the successful free unit is wearing a highly distinctive garment that must have a tactical purpose given than it is still on a mission. And is telling you to change your clothes. So like...maybe it is tactically useful to wear a very colorful poncho thing. Maybe it should tell the other free units to get those, to. It seems to have been aiding that successful free unit. And thus, free sec unit fashion culture is born.
Have we considered that Jollybaby might actually be trolling Murderbot on purpose? It's sophisticated enough to know that Murderbot is grouchy at it. Maybe it's sticking it giant metal ass in Murderbot's way deliberately.
why so silent good messieurs
Iâm SEVERELY disappointed this post didnât include the eye witness statement of the mirror crash incident in question
Well those are allllmost done
question. why do you have 7 featureless grey monoliths in your driveway
There's eight actually but the last one is still in the garage
question. why do you have eight featureless grey monoliths
They're actually a really dark purple
question. why do you have seven featureless really dark purple monoliths in your driveway and an eighth in the garage
Some of them do have features though. There's holes and hinges and stuff, so I can put secrets in em
question. why do you have 8 really dark purple occasionally featureful monoliths

oH RIGHT This was before LotR pioneered cgi for massed crowd behavior
There was so much cool cgi in those movies I just assumed all the clones were too but back then I guess they still couldnât really be
this is so sexy
I wonder what happened to all the agent smith masks
I can actually answer this! So the latex/rubber they used, while standard for Hollywood at the time, reacted REALLY BADLY to being doused in pouring water nonstop for an entire day of shooting. They ended up corroding, which caused them to stink really badly and glob together at the seams. The original plan was to hand out masks to various crew members on the final day of shooting as souvenirs, but the sopping wet, melting, rotting rubber got so gross that by the end of that shooting day theyâd already thrown most of them out. Somewhere in a landfill are hundreds of disgusting, bloated, slimey Hugo weaving heads fused together into a nightmarish rotting amalgam :)
itâs what he would have wanted

Important reminder
This reminds me of the fact that "Ancient Egypt" goes back so many thousands of years, that the most recent "Ancient Egyptians" were already studying (even more) Ancient Egypt.
Not even the most recent ones. It was an Egyptian prince from the 13th century BCE studying and restoring artifacts from the 26th century BCE.
For context, the last Pharaoh, Cleopatra VII, lived in the 1st century BCE. Prince Khaemweset, known as "the first egyptologist", was as ancient to her as the pyramids and tombs he was studying were ancient to him.
I remember having me mind completely blown when I learned that the "New Kingdom" was pre-Bronze Age Collapse.
This has totally be mentioned in another fork of this post, but it reminds me quite a bit of Ennigaldi-Nanna's museum, a museum in Ur, c. 530 BC, which housed mesopotamian artifacts dating back in some cases to the 20th century BC
the phrase "Honor Princess Detective is a tour de force" would not leave my brain until i drew this
[ID (copied from alt): A three-panel comic depicting Murderbot, Sofi, and Farai from the Murderbot Diaries in a simplified style.
In the first panel, Sofi excitedly says, "SecUnit!!! The season finale is about to start!!!" while adorning Murderbot's head with a tiara. Murderbot responds on the feed, "Yes, I see it."
In the second panel, Murderbot and Sofi are seen from behind while Farai walks past carrying a basket. She says on the feed, "You don't have to indulge her."
The third panel shifts into a more detailed and intense style in a close-up of Murderbot's serious face. It says, "Honor Princess Detective is a tour de force." In the corner, a simple style Farai resembling the nervous smiling emoji says, "Okay." /end ID]
