Best of 2015

2015 in music, heh. I’ll probably write a blog about this beautiful mess of a year another time, but suffice to say it’s been incredible, music aside. But I’ve always tied music to everything, ever, and this year’s no different. This year I: - Had my third legitimate, full scale emotional breakdown at a gig. A Kylie gig. - Ranted and gushed to actual Jeppo about how Run Away With Me soundtracked some of the happiest and most important bits of my life. - Paid too much to see grown men cry at Kylie and Dannii duetting in real life. - Paid too little to see grown manly manly men cry much harder into their dates and wives at Sufjan Stevens singing just about anything. - Desperately tried to convince high Canadians at a Purity Ring gig that Sam was my boyfriend. - Forgot about my anxieties and spun through Soho belting All The Lovers. - Lost a chunk of my knee doing the same thing in Edinburgh to All My Love. Etc, Etc, Etc. Anyway, all this happened to V GOOD MUSIC. And here are my faves.

Kylie and Twitter saved my life.

(This will be a very messy little passage, because my god am I drained and done with my day.)

Today, after two years of knowing everything was wrong on the inside, I finally gathered the nerve to phone home and tell them I can’t study Maths at Edinburgh any more. This September I won’t be going back.

I’ve never had a year filled with more dramatic highs and lows than this one passed. Limp-passing out of my first year, I decided no matter the outcome of my second I couldn’t continue. Unable to ever face the embarrassment of throwing my hands up and admitting I can’t do something, to my own mother never mind myself, I set a date for September, committing to spending as much of my money as I could on people and events that make me happy, and that would be that for me. So that kept me going. I’ve a notebook in my flat with letter plans, apologies, secrets. I’ve been sad about it, and not sad at all. It was just what it was.

The past few months have changed all of that. The more money I spent on doing what I loved, the more opportunities and personalities it opened up to me. I never once anticipated the joy and acceptance I’ve been made to feel this year. I was so set on my own plan because I’d never had the drive to reach into my life and change it for the better. I never had the reason or desire. Now I do. This year has made me want to live too badly to not change things. I’ll work some shit job and just get by. I don’t live for academic progress or for a high salary in the end. I live for friends and relationships and experiences. I want more people to hug me as hard as Ant does. I want someone to look at me like my first boyfriend did when he saw me step out in my formal outfit for the first time. I want to keep feeling as cared for as when Alex said ‘come on, Drew’ and lifted me up after Kylie. Christ, think of the Kylie tours I’d miss out on.

Basically for the first time in my life, I’m making a call on my own. And it’s petrifying and necessary and exhilarating and the biggest fucking sense of relief I’ve ever experienced. And this has been to say that. The long story short is that Twitter and Kylie just about saved my life. And that’s super lame. And brilliant. I love the people I have around me right now far too much to let that all go. So if any of you are reading this, know I appreciate you guys more than you know and thank you. Thank you so much. I love you guys.

Ask your friends how they are more often. Hug ‘em. Listen to them and acknowledge whatever shit’s on their head. And if you’re like me, for fuck sake get off youtube at 5am and talk to someone.
