I feel like modern fandom would approve of Strikethrough. @_@ Spent several years out of fandom due to real-life issues, came back to all this anti-shipper stuff… Seeing fandom turn ultra-moralistic and equate fiction with RL views is beyond surreal when we spent so much time FIGHTING that. The younger generations of fandom really don't try to learn anything about fandom history and it shows

They really don't have a clue about strikethrough or even the ff.net purges (heck I don't think most of them have even used ff.net)

This era of purity culture in fandom is honestly so strange. We have this group of largely lgbt+ children spouting the same ideology that conservative christian groups used to use against slash fic (and because they know nothing about fandom history past 2015 none of them realize that's what they are doing)

Also, the idea of rejoining fandom in the full-blown era of antis sound so terrifying! (I was "lucky" enough to see the progression from a minority of fandom to what it is now)

At this point I just don't think a lot of fandom genuinely knows how to engage with a work. I really don't.

Like, they know how to imagine two characters fucking, and they know how to imagine the characters in a coffee shop, and they know how to make cute Cinema Sins style jokes about it.

But they don't seem to know how to meet the work where it actually lives and listen to what the work's actually saying. And trying to guide people that direction has just resulted in me being called a snob a whole bunch.

I don't know what to do about it, to be honest with you.

It is fascinating to me to read these notes. Apparently for an awful lot of people now, “I’m a fan of a piece of media” literally only means “I ship characters and write AUs” and not “I enjoy examining what the media did and I like talking with other people about it.” It’s almost like the word “fandom” itself has come to mean “I immediately remix the contents of everything into a romance.” Like literally, a lot of people here seem to think that’s what “I’m a fan of this” means. It’s so bizarre to me as a fandom old - most people used to at least spend time enjoying the actual content of a story before immediately making it something else (and usually quite a lot of time.)

No wonder people seem to see “hey maybe actually engage with the contents of this show?” as snobbery if their actual definition of fandom is “I enjoy this by immediately making it something very different.” I wonder how we got here.

People have been so starved for something that actually has a message. Like, legit, people have been fed Disney shit for like 20 years a lot of people have never actually spent time with a piece of media with deeper contents than a bird bath. If they enjoy themselves in the shallows of media let them fuck around with the pool noodles. If you want to have conversations about a piece of media you find a friend you can have that conversation with cuz internet fandom is pool noodles and birdbaths. Make a (video) essay of how you read the show what you took away from it what it means to you. If you want to discuss deeper things like... do it. like minded people will find it, probably.
