this full thread changed my life and i am ALWAYS going to give the full thread because the parts people cut out aren't enough for the people experiencing these things, speaking as someone who does. it, really it just makes us, made me, feel bad about my own capabilities when i saw the unfinished thread.
This post will contain spoilers up to the end of the first part of the chapter 3 DRTA trial
I would like to explain a popular theory in the Japanese DRTA fandom, the theory is about Coco Hashizawa and Kokona Arumada being the same person.
The main reason for this, is the strange factors revolving Hashizawa's death.
First of all, the Body Discovery Announcement does not play for her death. The guys chalk it up as it being drowned by the loud music, but it's worth noting that even the other group only hears the BDA for Marin's murder.
Next, we have the Monokuma File. Its wording is very vague, and uses the term "All victims", rather than naming the victims, or even just saying "both victims". "All" could stand to mean just a single person, and it's even highlighted.
This brings us to two possible conclusions: either Hashizawa is still alive, or her body is a fake.
Let's examine both options:
1. Hashizawa is still alive
To explain this, I need to introduce another theory. Simply put: Hashizawa's body was put into the display case, then the display case with Hashizawa inside was put inside of the cooler, and then the contents were frozen. This would explain the missing display case, and Seki witnessing Hashizawa in the morning (with him waking up around 9AM, and Hashizawa's body being found around 2PM), in spite of Hold Nova's testimony about a large body taking at least 6 hours to freeze.
This would also mean Hashizawa had a small space to breath for a few hours, which could have preserved her life for a little time.
There is only one problem with this: according to the school rules, students who don't take part in the class trial get punished. Which would mean that if this applies Hashizawa was silently executed, was spared since she physically couldn't go, or did make it to the class trial grounds. It is also possible that her punishment is being postponed since Hold Nova and the mastermind are currently busy with the trial.
2. Hashizawa's body is fake
A second possibility would be Hashizawa's body being a fake, with the real one having been killed somewhere else. In fact, we never get to see her after Chisa asks her for help with serving, and Hashizawa doesn't do as asked despite agreeing to it. So, there was the option that she was killed early and a dummy was used to mimic her body. Unfortunately this theory doesn't work well, since she was witnessed by both Arumada and Seki after that point in time.
However, if we use both these theories there's another possibility: what if Hashizawa's body was a sort of disguise or doll that was frozen with the display case trick? And Arumada and Seki witnessed someone else with that disguise on?
With this in mind, let's talk about Kokona and her behaviour, especially in relation to Hashizawa.
First of all, she's the one who set up the speakers, something that might have given everyone the illusion that they simply didn't hear the BDA, even though it played.
She also tried to stop all attempts to defrost Hashizawa
She's also the only one who could have used the dumbwaiter that connects the green room to the home-ec room...
She also displays a lot of suspicious behaviour unrelated to the incident, such as what Seki explains during the investigation, her lack of surprise towards how two-faced he is, the fact she had an e-Handbook and was such counted as a student but was able to avoid all trials, and of course, knowing things she couldn't possibly have known if she only just joined everyone else.
However...if she was Hashizawa all along, her knowledge would make sense.
She could have just been imitating a designer she liked
Or perhaps Coco Hashizawa was Kokona Arumada all along, since she's repeatedly been presented as very talented in various fields, and she might have needed to hide her identity to be succesful, as she is the daughter of a skilled conductor who is also a big misogynist. Then, she'd just be reusing an old design she came up with in the past, before coming up with a second identity. Or if she was only impersonating Hashizawa during the killing game, this might have been her only true design work, which she then re-used.
If Kokona and Hashizawa were the same person it would also solve the problem of mandatory participation during the class trial, after all she is participating!
There are also other little reasons which might sound silly but add up with the above context, such as "Coco" and "Kokona" being similar names, and the two of them never have been in the same place at the same time.
On a meta level, it would also solve the matters of "Kokona dying in the chapter she was introduced in" and "Hashizawa not getting enough screentime"

I wasn’t expecting Ace to get a unique crying expression but here we are 😂 Pretty proud of myself for calling that Ace’s dream would address these oddly dismissive comments from back in 7-17:
It’s so Ace of him to be blunt when calling others out but also having trouble being honest about his own feelings. Those lines in 7-17 definitely read as deflecting and being in denial to me. That’s just how Ace chooses to cope with his problems.
You can even see this same mentality carrying through into his new crying expression… See? He’s still trying to smile and laugh, even through his tears. (Your one true love, by the way, is coincidentally described by Ace in Ghost Marriage as being “someone you can laugh and cry with”!)
fbskwbuwnsma I find it really funny how people were theorizing that Malleus would OB over the threat of Yuu going home when he ended up OBing over the thought of losing Lilia… Then it turns out that Ace is the one centering Yuu in his foremost desires 😭 I mean, I know Ace made that long trek back to Sage’s Island back in book 4, but so did Deuce and Deuce didn’t dream of Yuu staying—only Ace did. This is most likely the result of Ace not properly processing his feelings in the waking world (because of his deflection and denial), despite deep down valuing his friendships with Yuu, Deuce, etc.
Come to think of it, it makes sense that Ace’s dream ended up taking place during summer vacation on the Stitch island… because Stitch talked about ohana—family, which means no one gets forgotten or left behind. Ace’s dream is to be able to move forward (ie the summer after the end of their first year)… with all of his friends and NRC family. That includes his Heartslabyul classmates (yes, even his tyrannical dorm leader that he always complains about) and his friends at Ramshackle.
I can see why this would feed the brain rot of Ace yumes www It really slots in with the “I-It’s not like I care about you or anything, idiot! (jk I care so much)” kind of trope. And his dream taking place on a remote island screams “stereotypical beach fanservice episode”. Bro just keeps slotting in so well with all the classics… Wishing all Ace yumes fun with this update ^^

In all the boys' groovy illustrations theres always someone else with them. Riddle has cater and trey, Trey has cater. Cater has ace and Deuce has someone in the corner (i cant tell who)

Yes, the Birthday Boy series tends to generally showcase at least one other character in the Groovies. For Heartslabyul: Cater and Trey appear in Riddle’s, Trey appears in Cater’s, and I believe it’s Ace in Deuce’s.
That isn’t Trey because Trey wears gloves in his dorm uniform, and nor can it be Riddle because his dorm uniform looks entirely different than the standard one. That leaves us with Cater and Ace. By process of elimination and using context clues, it’s most likely Ace. Cater already appeared in two other Birthday Boy Groovies. Additionally, Deuce has a voice line where he says Ace gifted him a jack-in-the-box—and while the Groovy doesn’t depict that item, Deuce is reacting similarly shocked upon opening it. Ace has also explained (I think in a Halloween event or vignette??) that it is possible to pull off a simple trick of flashing lights and sounds using magic. He tends to use his skills for childish things like little pranks and sleights, and has the personality to be inclined towards those things too. All the circumstantial evidence points to Ace.
Anyway, I feel like Ace is one of those characters you commonly see getting shipped with Yuu because of how he is presented in official content (and especially the main story). Him and Malleus seem to be the Big Two on that regard. That’s what my observation has always been, at least.
It’s rare that TWST will put out these “looking directly at you” illustrations, and even when they do, it’s not always aimed at Yuu if you look at the context the vignettes provide. For example, the Jade Outdoor Wear Groovy has him looking back and offering a hand… but it’s not for Yuu, it’s for Cater; Floyd’s Beans Camo Groovy had him looking soft and cute… and that gaze is aimed at Epel while Floyd talks about how he wants to take on strong opponents. Ace’s Birthday Boy Groovy exists in defiance of that pattern!
I think it’s funny that his dynamic with Yuu can so easily feed into that trope of the BFF that’s crushing hard but is too afraid to fully commit, so he always frames advances/flirting/playful teasing as “just jokes” to test the waters. It almost feels like Ace was tailor-made for this 😂 It sets up a lot the potential for something as simple as a look seeming longing. I can definitely understand how someone might see that Groovy and think it’s romantic. I don’t think most people make that kind of expression while using the thumb to brush away crumbs and staring into the camera 💀 Bro would 100% catch you and then go, “I know, I know, I look so cool that you just can’t get enough of me. Well, today’s my special day so I’m feeling extra nice. Feel free to stare at me aaaaaall you like, Prefect.” And then maybe joke that you could have him all to yourself if you asked—
