SacredLightJapan I’m Azuma, a photographer based in Kansai, Japan. I photograph real moments of natural light, forests, mist, waterfalls, the sea, sky, and quiet landscapes across Japan. My work focuses less on famous locations and more on atmosphere — the way light enters a forest, stretches across the sea, passes through mist, or transforms an ordinary landscape for only a brief moment. Beneath the Old Willow

An old shrine stands beneath the sweeping branches of a willow tree in Japan.

I chose black and white for this photograph because I wanted the shapes, shadows, stone lanterns, and architecture to become more prominent than the colors themselves.

The scene is filled with layers — the old tree, the shrine buildings, rows of stone lanterns, and the open sky above them.

Rather than focusing on a single object, I wanted to preserve the atmosphere of the entire place: quiet, aged, and shaped by time.

A Strange Night in Sakaiminato, Japan

At night, the streets around Sakaiminato Station take on a slightly unusual atmosphere.

Sakaiminato is closely associated with manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, and parts of the town reflect the world of his famous supernatural characters and stories.

Even ordinary elements of the streetscape can feel different here.

What caught my attention in this scene was the line of distinctive street lights stretching into the distance. Under the dark blue evening sky, they gave the station area a strange but playful character.

This is one of the things I enjoy about photographing Japan — sometimes the identity of a place appears not in a famous landmark, but in small details built into the town itself.

Guardian Beside the Stone Steps

A weathered stone komainu stands beside a quiet flight of steps at a shrine in Japan.

Komainu are traditional guardian figures commonly found at Shinto shrines, often placed near entrances or along approaches to the sacred grounds.

What drew me to this scene was the way the guardian seemed almost absorbed into the landscape. Moss covered the stone, the steps disappeared into the greenery, and the surrounding forest gave the entire place a quiet, aged atmosphere.

Rather than photographing the statue alone, I wanted to preserve the relationship between the guardian, the stone steps, and the forest around it.

Rings of Light in the Forest

This photograph was intentionally taken at an angle where strong natural light would interact with the lens and create visible flare.

The circular patterns in the lower part of the image are a form of lens flare or optical ghosting, produced when intense light enters the lens and reflects between internal optical surfaces.

Rather than avoiding the effect, I chose to use it as part of the composition. By adjusting the angle of the camera, the reflected light formed layered rings that appear to float within the forest.

The result is a real optical effect created at the moment of capture, without digital compositing or added light effects.

Snow-Covered Torii Path in a Remote Mountain Shrine, Japan

Deep in the mountains of Japan’s Kansai region, there is a shrine that is not easy to reach.

Even within Japan, it is a place visited by relatively few people. In winter, the long path of wooden torii gates becomes covered in snow, creating a landscape that feels far removed from everyday life.

What remained with me most was not simply the snow, but the repetition of the old wooden gates disappearing into the forest. The path felt quiet, remote, and almost suspended in time.

This is a real place in Japan, photographed as I encountered it.

A Rare Brocken Spectre Above the Clouds in Japan

A rare Brocken spectre appearing above a sea of clouds in Japan.

This atmospheric phenomenon can occur when the observer stands above clouds or mist with the sun behind them. The observer’s shadow is projected onto the clouds, sometimes surrounded by colorful rings of light known as a glory.

The alignment of sunlight, clouds, and the observer lasts only briefly. Each appearance is a fleeting moment that cannot be recreated in exactly the same way.

Stone Lanterns Along a Shrine Approach in Japan

A quiet shrine approach, lined with rows of stone lanterns beneath old trees.

In monochrome, the repetition of the lanterns and the long perspective of the path become more visible. What remained with me most, however, was the stillness of the place — the feeling of moving slowly through layers of stone, trees, and time.

This is a real place in Japan, photographed as I encountered it.

My Favorite Photographs — Guardian and Stone Steps

A stone guardian watches over a long flight of steps leading through the forest toward a shrine in Japan.

What I like about this photograph is the way the scene unfolds in layers.

The guardian stands close in the foreground, while the stone steps lead the eye deeper into the forest and toward the architecture at the top.

The surrounding trees, moss, and small flowers soften the strong lines of the staircase and give the scene a quieter atmosphere.

For me, this photograph is not only about the shrine itself.

It is about the feeling of approaching a place slowly — moving from the forest, through the steps, toward something waiting in the distance.

This remains one of my favorite photographs because of the balance between structure, nature, and depth.

Shrine Gate Framing a Cedar Road in Japan

A quiet view through a traditional shrine gate in Japan, opening onto a long cedar-lined road that disappears into the forest.

What drew me to this scene was the way the gate naturally framed the road beyond it. The straight line of the path, the rhythm of the tall cedar trees, and the dark wooden structure in the foreground created a strong sense of depth and stillness.

I photographed the scene as it appeared, without staging or altering the place.

For me, this image is about looking through one space into another — from the shelter of the shrine gate toward the long road beyond.

Sacred Shrine Entrance in Japan

A quiet shrine entrance in Japan, framed by towering trees, guardian lion statues, and a large traditional shimenawa rope.

What drew me to this scene was not the name of the place, but the scale and stillness of the entrance itself. The trees rise around the shrine, the komainu stand quietly on either side, and the sacred rope forms a strong line across the upper part of the image.

I photographed this moment as it appeared, without trying to make the place look more dramatic than it was.

For me, the photograph is about presence — the feeling of standing at the threshold of a place shaped by time, trees, stone, and human tradition.

My Favorite Photographs — Light Through the Cedars

Sunlight entered through the tall trees of a forest in Japan, creating rays and subtle colors across the scene.

What I like about this photograph is the contrast between the scale of the trees and the temporary nature of the light.

The cedars rise quietly around the landscape, while the sunlight passes through them for only a brief moment.

The rays and lens flare appeared naturally as I photographed toward the light.

For me, this photograph captures something central to SacredLightJapan.

The forest itself remains, but the light is always changing.

A few moments earlier or later, the scene would have looked completely different.

This remains one of my favorite photographs because it combines scale, stillness, and a fleeting moment of natural light.

My Favorite Photographs — Cherry Blossoms and a Pagoda

Cherry blossoms surrounded a pagoda beneath a pale, misty sky in Japan.

What I like about this photograph is the quiet balance between the architecture and the softness of the blossoms.

The pagoda appears almost suspended within the landscape, while the branches and flowers gradually lead the eye toward it.

The muted sky removes much of the visual distraction and allows the shapes of the trees, blossoms, and architecture to remain calm and distinct.

For me, this photograph is not simply about cherry blossom season.

It is about the brief moment when weather, distance, architecture, and flowers came together in a way that could not be repeated exactly.

This remains one of my favorite photographs from Japan.

SacredLightJapan — Returning to Photography

After a period away from posting, I am returning to SacredLightJapan.

My interest in photography has remained the same: natural light, quiet landscapes, forests, mist, water, shrines, and fleeting moments found across Japan.

The photograph above captures one of those moments — a rainbow appearing briefly within the spray of a waterfall.

Scenes like this are why I continue to photograph.

Light changes. Mist moves. Water never remains still. A moment appears, and then it is gone.

SacredLightJapan is my record of those temporary encounters with light, atmosphere, and place.

From here, I will continue sharing original photographs taken by me in Japan, including both new work and selected images from my existing archive.

An Ancient Tree Covered in Green

An old tree stood quietly beneath layers of moss, ferns, and deep green foliage in Japan.

What interested me was not only its size, but the way time seemed to remain visible across its trunk and branches.

The surface of the tree was covered with life.

Moss followed the curves of the bark, small plants settled along the branches, and the entire form seemed to have grown together with the surrounding forest.

There was no single dramatic moment in this scene.

Instead, the photograph became about texture, age, and the slow accumulation of time.

I am often drawn to landscapes like this — places where nature does not appear as something separate, but as layers that have continued to grow together over many years.

A Shrine Path in the Mist

Mist settled quietly around a shrine path in Japan, softening the trees, stone lanterns, and buildings in the distance.

What drew me to this scene was the way the path led through the fog.

The stone lanterns created a rhythm on both sides, while the shrine gradually emerged from the mist at the end of the approach.

The atmosphere was quiet and subdued.

There was no strong sunlight or dramatic color.

Instead, the scene was shaped by distance, moisture, muted light, and the stillness of the surrounding forest.

Moments like this are one of the reasons I photograph sacred and natural places in Japan.

The architecture is important, but so is the atmosphere around it.

For a short time, the mist changed the entire character of the place.

Mist Between the Trees

Mist moved quietly through the forest in Japan, softening the distance between the trees.

Unlike the strong sunlight I often photograph, this scene was shaped by diffused light and atmosphere.

The forest seemed to lose its usual sharpness as the mist passed through it, creating layers of depth that changed from one moment to the next.

What interested me was the silence of the scene.

There was no dramatic light, no strong reflection, and no obvious focal point.

Instead, the photograph became about distance, texture, and the quiet presence of the forest itself.

These subtle moments are also an important part of SacredLightJapan.

Not every landscape needs to be dramatic.

Sometimes the atmosphere is enough.
