If you can't bear anyone else playing with the toys you make in ways you don't specifically approve of, don't be a toymaker. Once they're out in the world, in other people's hands and governed by their imaginations, they will do things you didn't intend. They will bury the toy in sand, or they will make the toys kiss, or they will draw all over the toy in permanent marker.

If someone is mailing you pictures of the assorted ways they've destroyed your toys, that's weird and you can and should ban them from doing so. If you're collaborating with other toymakers professionally, it would be perfectly reasonable to ask them to interact with your toys publicly in proscribed ways- that is both a professional business arrangement and a genuine one-on-one relationship.

But the toys themselves aren't yours anymore.

Everyone who sees a performance or movie or stream has a sliver of the idea of that character in their head, and you don't get to tell them what to do with it once it's there. That isn't how telling stories works; it's never been a right anyone could claim.

See, i understand why content creators have boundaries. Some people feel super uncomfortable when depicted sexually by strangers. I get it.

Because i am a romance repulsed aromantic. I have been harrassed by people i know who wanted me to get with/date another person. To the point where i CRIED because they were so persistent even after i brought up my discomfort. So i get it. I understand. Because it's fucked up to do that to someone in their face, especially after they tell you to stop.

If i was a content creator, i wouldnt want to read fics that depict my persona falling in love, being romantic, and doing romantic gestures with someone else, coworker or not. I wouldnt want to see fanart of my persona proposing to another content creator. Even if it isnt 'me', it's close enough because when you do youtube or twitch, your on camera personality blends with your irl one.

But you know what i would do? I'd lay out my boundaries (yes, the real definition of boundaries, not rules, not absolutes). I dont want to see romantic shipping of me/my persona. It gives me the ick. Then i will provide a tag for fans who would want to write/draw me/my persona in such a manner so i can avoid such content. I will tell my audience that fanfics containing overt romantic themes, to tag it with 'romance'. And if someone sent such work to me or brought it to my attention, it will be deleted and the person would be blocked. When i read fanfics, i will use the Exclude filters to sort out fics tagged 'romance' so i wont see what i dont wanna see.

And you know what i WOULDNT do? Completely ban such content from being created. Send my fans (explicitly or implicitly) to harrass people who make such work. Rant on stream/twitter about amatonormativity. Calling these people rapists, abusers, and pedophiles. Saying they should be put on 'a list'. Threatening total surveillance from other fans. Providing a platform for fans to snitch out other fans. Publicly quote retweeting people defending their art. Whatever the fuck these cc's are doing.

Because im a normal sane human being. Because i know that people will create what they wanna create. Because art is a form of expression. Because it could be their way of processing trauma. Because they could just be having fun.

Because when i put myself out in public, people will interpret me from their own lens and make their own judgement calls. And they will connect some dots, real or imagined. And they will create something out of it.

Fuck fan surveillance. Fuck censorship. Fuck content creator boundaries.

there’s this emerging language that content creators talking about boundary discourse have been using recently and it really disturbs me in ways i don’t know how to phrase man. commandeering words like abusive/abuser or sexual predator or rapist or pedophile or fetishist to talk about people who just… ship minecraft characters is really really really unnerving. i’m not sure how to word my thoughts but like at the very least: holy fuck that’s so insensitive. using those words completely unattached from their meaning to win an argument or claim moral superiority is seriously sick

i think it’s especially disturbing to do so in the minecraft community which is notorious for it’s young, impressionable and vulnerable audience who have been, on several occasions, taken advantage of by creators who ARE abusive and predatory. i think it’s really really disgusting to play on/weaponize the fears of these communities by using this language in this way. idk
