Hi Everyone. Bet y'all thought we'd be skipping the challenge this year. But there is no way we wouldn't celebrate the anniversary. So Happy PxJ Community Anniversary! We will be moving the event a little to start from September 19th and it will end on October 19th.

This year the ever wonderful Jar of Loose Screws will be providing the prize.

We're making it simple this time around. September, throughout December are 4 months filled with celebrations around the world and my country. So the focus of this year's challenge is: Holidays.

And because I'm me, gotta always add a little modifier to add to the challenge. You are allowed to use any existing Holidays from around the world and adapt it into your piece, but you're just as welcome to create brand new holidays to serve your works. Five modifiers are available for you to choose from and you must use one of these modifiers.

The modifiers will be an animal or creature that you must include in your piece somehow. The modifiers are:

Black Cats.

Bats.

Dragons.

Ravens

Scarab

You can submit art (photos are acceptable) or written fiction. For fan fiction the minimum length is 500 words.

You will have until 11:59 cst on October 19th to submit your piece and be eligible for the prize.

Got a couple of small pads of 100% cotton paper to test out so I took the chance to color this lovely Ares (art done for me by Sin0ky) and test out the paper. Oh boy was the paper a challenge. Used some effects to give a glow to his eyes ans fire plume, cinders and lighting. Gouache and colores pencils were also used for this piece.

It's not a bad paper and the first sheet might not always be a good representation of how the paper will behave normally, but it took forever and a century for the watercolor to dry and settle into the paper. It was way too easy to reactivate paint that normally would have dried by the time I got to rework on it. It forced me to change how to approach the painting process which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it did make the process much longer than it should have been for a piece barely over the 4x6 inch format.

Granulating colors had a more notable color shift upon drying compared to other papers, and some of the behavior felt a little too similar to wood pulp papers instead of cotton papers. I need to paint more on this paper to give a more accurate assesment but the first impressions are...cool paper but definitely wouldn't use it on bigger pieces and on the regular.

The paper is the Langou 100% cotton WC paper. These papers are found in several chinese marketplaces online and are often found as papers available in tiny formats for plen air/on the go. Definitely a step above other "travel size" options out there, though.

Ares has it in good authority that Hades is a really big fan of RHCP, and took absolutely no effort to convince him to suffer through Snow's workout of a lead riff. And Ares will take any and all chances to do Chad Smith's drums.
