The prettyboy area is a wonderful place to go! My senior research project in college focused on the rivers and streams there and the loch Raven reservoir. It’s quite a neat outdoor oasis so close to Baltimore. Just be careful because the reservoir is for drinking water so there’s a lot of rules for water protection there.

Mottramite | PbCu(VO4)(OH)

Mottramite is an orthorhombic anhydrous vanadate hydroxide mineral, PbCu(VO4)(OH), at the copper end of the descloizite subgroup. Named for the locality at Mottram St. Andrew, Cheshire, England where ore was stockpiled. Most likely mined from Pim Hill Mine, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. It was formerly called cuprodescloizite or psittacinite (this mineral characterized in 1868 by Frederick Augustus Genth).

Drusy crusts of tiny intergrown crystals are common, also encrustations and mammillary or botryoidal surfaces. The colour is various shades of green, yellow-green, blackish brown or nearly black. Crystals often grow step by step, with the different steps or zones having different colours. The streak is yellowish green, or yellow, and the crystals are transparent to opaque, with a greasy lustre.

Tellurium | Te

Tellurium is a chemical element with the symbol Te and atomic number 52. It is a brittle, mildly toxic, rare, silver-white metalloid. Tellurium is chemically related to selenium and sulfur, all three of which are chalcogens. It is occasionally found in native form as elemental crystals. Tellurium comes from the Latin name of planet earth, "tellus". Tellurium is far more common in the Universe as a whole than on Earth. Its extreme rarity in the Earth's crust, comparable to that of platinum, is due partly to its formation of a volatile hydride that caused tellurium to be lost to space as a gas during the hot nebular formation of Earth.

Erythrite | Co3(AsO4)2 · 8H2O

Named in 1832 by François Sulpice Beaudant from the Greek έρυθρος, "erythros" for "red". Erythrite or red cobalt is a secondary hydrated cobalt arsenate mineral. Erythrite and annabergite, chemical formula Ni3(AsO4)2•8H2O, or nickel arsenate form a complete series with the general formula (Co,Ni)3(AsO4)2•8H2O. Erythrite crystallizes in the monoclinic system and forms prismatic crystals. The color is crimson to pink and occurs as a secondary coating known as cobalt bloom on cobalt arsenide minerals. Well-formed crystals are rare, with most of the mineral manifesting in crusts or small reniform aggregates.

Greenockite | CdS

The naming of the mineral is often attributed to Henry James Brooke and Arthur Connell in 1840. The original description was actually made by Robert Jameson who first described greenockite, and the first description was in “his journal”: The Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal. The mineral was named for Lord Greenock - later Earl Charles Murray Cathcart, 2nd Earl Cathcart.

Typically found as yellow to red hemimorphic pyramidal crystals and earthy coatings. Caution should be used in sight identifying yellow cadmium sulfide coatings as hawleyite (dimorph of greenockite) is not a very rare species and occurs in identical appearing coatings and identical environments; furthermore some of these coatings can be X-ray amorphous ("xanthochroite").

Wad | Black minerals

Wad, wadd, and/or wadt were used as early miner's terms and used for various black mineral substances. A generic name for (often poorly crystalline) soft manganese oxides/hydroxides, often containing significant amounts of hydroxides/oxides of other metals and adsorbed metals (Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, and other transition metals, alkali elements, etc.). The redundant name "black wad" has been frequently attributed to Richard Kirwan in his Elements of Mineralogy (1784) but Kirwan mentioned, but did not cite, neither Josiah Wedgwood's (1783) analysis of "black wadd" nor contemporary experiments with wad by Joseph Banks, nor any earlier sources. (Wad had the unusual oxidizing power of causing an equal mixture of it and linseed oil to combust after an hour or two.) Kirwan did describe the material: "One of the most remarkable ores of manganese is that called black wad; it is of a dark brown colour, partly in powder and partly indurated, and brittle." Earthy wad-like manganese minerals, of course, were used in glassmaking in ancient Rome and wads were used as pigments in prehistoric times. (Manganese metal was first isolated in impure form in 1774.) According to Thomas Robinson (1709), wad was also used relating to graphite by miners in the Westmoreland and Cumberland (Cumbria) regions of England. Robinson (1709) further indicated that the name "wadt" was used in Germany suggesting the black character of a substance. Jonathan Otley (1819) stated that a deed dated November 28, 1614, in Borrowdale, England referred to graphite as wad: "... the several names of wad, black cawke, black lead, plumbago and graphite, by which this mineral has been successively designated...”

Tyuyamunite | Ca(UO2)2(VO4)2 · 5-8H2O

Named in 1912 by Konstantin Avtonomovich Nenadkevič after its discovery locality, Tyuya-Muyun, Fergana Valley, Kyrgyzstan. Tyuyamunite is a very rare uranium mineral, it is a bright, canary-yellow color because of its high uranium content. Also, because of tyuyamunite's high uranium content, it is radioactive. A secondary mineral occurring in the oxidized zones of U-V deposits, especially those of the Colorado Plateau-type.

Goethite | FeO(OH)

Named in 1806 by Johann Georg Lenz in honor of the German poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher, politician, and geoscientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethite is the most common simple iron oxide mineral. A weathering product of numerous iron-bearing minerals. It is found in soil and other low-temperature environments such as sediment. Goethite often forms through the weathering of other iron-rich minerals, and thus is a common component of soils, concentrated in laterite soils. Goethite has been well known since ancient times for its use as a pigment (brown ochre). Evidence has been found of its use in paint pigment samples taken from the caves of Lascaux in France.

Cuprite | Cu2O

Named in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger from the Latin "cuprum," in allusion to its composition. Cuprite is commonly found as an oxidation product of copper sulphides in the upper zones of veins, often associated with Native Copper, Malachite, Azurite, Limonite and Chalcocite. A fibrous form of Cuprite is known as Chalcotrichite (below).
