Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father.

Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the Fun Home. It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve.

The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies by Vito Russo

A subjective history of the various ways in which lesbians and gay men have been portrayed on the screen. It is both chronological and thematic, moving from decade to decade but weaving into each the recurrent modes of homosexual expression in the movies. Because the ways in which homosexuality emerges on the screen reflect the values of our culture, The Celluloid Closet, by concentrating on American films, questions American ideas of sexuality and, more specifically, masculinity and femininity.

Highlighted with over 120 stills and other photos, many never before published and some from scenes cut from the released versions of films, The Celluloid Closet is at times amusing and at others disturbing, but always fascinating.
