Speculation about masks in Hollow Knight

Here’s a few bits of personal headcanon about Hollow Knight masks:

Basically, masks allow the Pale King’s power to grant bugs intelligence subservient to him. They aren’t necessary for intelligence, period, and even faces might not be necessary, considering that Tiso and the mawleks don’t seem to have them but Tiso is fully sentient and the mawleks were presumably somewhat intelligent, but you must have one or the other to get your mind from the Pale King. The Nightmare’s Heart might be doing the same thing with its subjects, given that they all have their own masks in a different style, and Nymm appears to be Brumm without his mask or memories. According to the mask maker, wearing a mask can grant a new mind which overwrites the old. We also know that a mask can be lost, which seems to cause the bug to revert. The radiance and the plague seem to imply that masks can be either corrupted or else overcome themselves. So far, all of this is fairly well agreed upon as far as I know. But here’s my ideas for how this gets weird.

You know those weird tablets in King’s Pass that address “Higher Beings”, and the lore hounds can never quite agree on what they mean? So here’s my idea about them: They’re actually a trap for other gods. The first one you’ll see instructs the reader in how to focus soul to create a mask. Any Higher Being which follows those instructions will find that the mask erases their original mind and replaces it with one naturally subservient to the Pale King, just like the citizens of Hallownest made from animalistic bugs. The ones after that respectively are

-a warning against shapeshifting that might damage or disturb the mask and a claim (patently false but believable for a newly created being with no knowledge and an inherent trust in the writer’s words) that they were created by the Pale King

-an order to obey the laws of Hallownest

-a warning not to travel beyond the Pale King’s influence, where they might regain their original mind, find out what was done to them and come back in a murderous rage

-a warning not to look at one of the most fucked up things the kingdom has ever produced, which could potentially upset a masked Higher Being enough that their new mind turns against the king (we know from Brumm/Nymm that it’s possible for a masked being to turn traitor given sufficient reason)

Of course, the Pale King is smart enough not to pick fights with higher beings smart enough not to be tricked by that, hence why he never picked a fight with Unn or the Nightmare’s Heart despite Unn stealing a portion of his turf and the Heart publically betting on everything he made falling apart. In fact, only one higher being actually did fall for it: The Fool. The Pale King might not have expected the trap to actually work, given that he gave his singular victim a humiliating nickname and never seemed to have much productive use for it beyond entertaining bugs with blood sport (not that it was technically blood. Hemolymph sport?), and later setting up the arena with a catcher for shed void so it could be used to train vessels. And speaking of vessels:

The Knight, as well as all the other vessels, aren’t really children of the Pale King and White Lady per se. What they are is very special masks created by the two Higher Beings, designed to work not on bugs, but on void. This is why the faces of the vessels are the only things that are different, as they were experimenting with a variety of designs in their quest for a perfect vessel. This created an interesting problem: unlike a normal bug, the void is indestructible, meaning that there was a decent chance that the mask would not outlive what was under it. For this reason, it was imperative that the vessel masks also be designed with the ability to absorb soul and focus it to strengthen and repair themselves. While the ability to cast spells is useful, this was the real reason the vessels were given the power to manipulate soul. When the mask breaks result is a being of void, just conscious enough to resent its former imprisonment and so attack any mask it sees. However, the vessels are designed to contain void, so when one is part-full (such as because it broke and had to remake itself by some slow and unclear process), damage to the shade which would ordinarily only disturb its form will instead allow the mask to reabsorb pieces of the shade until it collapses and can be pulled back inside in full. Because void doesn’t have instincts in the same way a dumb bug does, the vessels can be made to have little enough desire to give the Radiance nothing to manipulate, and because the Void naturally consumes other powers, it was able to absorb the Radiance in full.This explains the knight respawning (sort of), why they can focus (an ability normally reserved for proper Higher Beings).

So, that’s my thoughts on masks. Anyone have any thoughts of their own on the subject?
