"You see yourself in her, don't you?"
"it's easy to write female characters just write characters as genderless and then make them women" is such awful writing advice and yet I keep seeing it pop up.
oh yeah sure just write a genderless character - surely writing a character whose history, personality, behavior and morals were never influenced by gender is easy and interesting. and then make them a woman! because surely a female character would never have had their history, personality, behavior and morals influenced by their gender.
you know what's much better advice? write your characters with the gender you want, then think about what would happen if you flipped their gender. what would change? what would *need* to change? of the things that remained the same, would their implications change? would it actually be more interesting this way? why, why not? put some thoughts into writing women instead of trying to engineer a situation where you don't have to consider anything about women while fucking writing one.
mark, my words. *mark brings me my dictionary* thank you mark

I love "travel through hell" stories so much and yet I have not found one singular story that I completely adore yet.......

Youâre an organ in the working body of this world, Mallory Glass. No amount of scornful looks and sour remarks is going to change that.

Without checking their blog, what are five things you know prev loves?
Ellis, Bee and Trench are all deeply and wholeheartedly in the teen slasher movie
Theben is actually in the Hungergames MMFF (and that's exactly her problem)
Rex, Embrose and Reem are in Hannibal (though Reem dabbles in Silent Hill 3 sometimes)
Caph is in a depressing shanty ballad about wanting to go home to drown in peace
Kostah is in an analogue horror series
Millet is in Pathologic
Juliana is an an edgy 2000s anime with tons of super beautiful AMVs that make you want to watch it only to be disappointed by the whackass story
And Holly is actually in the Hungergames books
âI donât put politics in my storiesâ is the literary equivalent of a cishet guy going âI donât have pronounsâ

I also like the idea of showing something as a problem before itâs shown as a strength. Almost every character trait has two sides, and by showing the âbadâ side first, it sets things up to not only make sense, but to also be very satisfying.
