I want to get into shakespeare's works and i've got a decent amount of his books but i also want to watch the plays. However there are different productions of each play and i wanted to know which specific ones people would recommend (looking for youtube recordings or movie adaptations if they are good enough)
Ooooo nice!
Here are my faves, out of the ones I’ve watched (keep in mind that they may not be free, they’re just my faves):
Twelfth night: the National theatre (2017) one! Very funny, very queer, wonderful staging+costumes, female Malvolio! https://www.ntathome.com/twelfth-night
Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity. <em>What is Twelfth Night about?</em> A ship is wrecked o
Julius Caesar: Bridge Theatre! I love anything the bridge theatre does, honestly. 10/10 https://www.bridgetheatre.co.uk/whats-on/julius-caesar/
Julius Caesar | The Bridge Theatre
Midsummer night’s dream: also Bridge theatre! Trust me on this one, if you’re gonna take any recommendations TAKE THIS ONE it literally was the thing that got me into Shakespeare. They change the roles of Oberon/Titania which makes it 100% funnier+better imo . https://www.bridgetheatre.co.uk/whats-on/a-midsummer-nights-dream/
The critically-acclaimed production A Midsummer Night's Dream returns to the Bridge Theatre for Summer 2025
Much ado about nothing: honestly, so many options! The movie’s pretty good, but you can take a look at the tumblr iconic David Tennant production (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5569310/), the Royal Shakespeare Company one set on Christmas (https://www.rsc.org.uk/much-ado-about-nothing/past-productions/christopher-luscombe-2014-production), or the National theatre one, set in a hotel (https://www.ntathome.com/much-ado-about-nothing). I have a soft spot for the NT one, since I saw it live :)
Katherine Parkinson (<em>The IT Crowd</em>) and John Heffernan (<em>Dracula</em>) lead the cast in Shakespeare’s romcom of sun, sea and mist
Played as Love's Labours Won and set in an English country house just after the First World War
Hamlet: the Andrew Scott Hamlet is hard to beat, honestly. Last time I checked, it was on YouTube!
Coriolanus: the Tom Hiddleston production! Easy to find for free online.
Ohhhh man I just realized you were looking for YouTube recordings…… nevermind🥲 hope it’s still useful!
