Since it seems even more likely that it will be sexual assault, here’s my rant that I saved yesterday.
———-
I really have no words for this Dr Todd sexually assaulting Charity spoiler. Actually, that's a lie, I have a lot of words. Those who don't like negativity, look away.
This show has an over reliance on sexual assault stories and it's getting disturbing at this point. And I know I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I think Aaron's is one of the best stories they've ever done and I also really liked what they did with Ruby's character and her relationship with Caleb during hers. But on the whole, a lot of them have been questionable, none more so than Lydia's, which resulted in a whodunnit where Ice, the horse, was the culprit. I just think they need to be more imaginative with what kinds of stories they are giving people.
Just like with all of the others, there's always some new angle they can tout. And sure, there could be something unique to telling the story of a woman assaulting another woman. But to tell that with these characters???
Charity has already had a sexual assault story, does she need a second one. Is that really what they want to be doing right now? Seriously???
To go from Dr Todd being a workplace bully for Jacob, to moving into the village, to inexplicably retiring early, to wanting to torture Jacob at home, to cartoonishly blackmailing Charity over this baby secret and dating Vanessa for cover? to mess with Charity?, to now sexually assaulting Charity???? What is this character??? And she still has zero motivations for anything she’s doing and I doubt she ever will because what could they possibly come up with to justify this.
This story started out originally as an accidental false positive pregnancy for Sarah and her suddenly wanting a child. Then it became about her wanting to do IVF. Then she had cancer and had to have surgery, which resulted in complications that led to a hysterectomy. Then they started the surrogacy portion of the story. Then Mack had issues and Charity and him were in a fight so she kissed Vanessa and was rejected so she slept with Ross. Then she got pregnant with Ross's kid instead of the Sarah and Jacob's baby. Then she lied about it for months, meanwhile Mack was kidnapped and held in a bunker for weeks. Then it became the workplace bullying story. Then blackmail. And now this???? Like what are we even doing here??? Why can't they just stick with a story and tell it? Why don't they trust the actors they have and the relationships the characters have to be able to tell this messy soapy story? Why did they need to insert a random external villain into this? Why does she then need to sexually assault Charity?
It feels like they want to absolve Charity of her sins in the baby story by having terrible things happen to her and blackmail wasn't enough for them, they have to do this too? And then what? What happens when the baby secret does come out? Will anyone be allowed to react in a normal way or will all of their feelings be sacrificed for the sake of this awful thing they're doing to Charity? I feel like a lot of people were interested in seeing this messy situation blow up and now it's becoming something else entirely that I'm not interested in at all and find kind of horrific. They've undermined their own story and for what? This offensive plot point?
And will they do this assault story justice or will it move on to something else insane next because this story can't stay as one thing for more than a few weeks. It's the rule. And if they're not going to do it justice, why do something like this in the first place???
Not to mention, it's kind of a gross thing to do during Pride month in the first place. Another gay villain and not a fun one anymore cause now she's a rapist?
What are we doing here?????
(the words "mortal enemy" are not strong enough for my animosity towards Laura Shaw these days)
