𝕷𝖚𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖈𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖆 just passed and in honor of it, here a some facts since it's one of my favorite Pegan holidays. The Holiday is celebrated around February 13-15. It took place before the Ides of March as a way to expell old negative energy and make way for the new, and to be sure the City was fertile. It is viewed mostly as a sex & fertility festival. 𝕷𝖚𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖈𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖆 was started by the twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. The 𝕷𝖚𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖈𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖆 festival started around 750 B.C. and it lasted until the 5th Century. It is thought Lupercalia took place to honor the She-Wolf who nursed them as babes and the Roman fertility God; thought to be the Roman God Faunus(or the Greek God Pan.) A Love Raffle/Lottery was held, women's' names were placed in a bowl and men chose one at random, they were then coupled through the entire festival, and would run naked together through the woods and the city, the couples spent the night together and many paired couples fell in love and married. Young men also dressed as wolves and ran around the city half or fully naked, lashing at women with goat skin to ensure they would be fertile and to expell negative or evil spirits. Milk and Figs were included in the festival for various reasons. When the twins were sent down the river as babes, they got caught up in the bushels of a fig tree before the River God set them free and floated them to the cave where they were found and suckled by the She-Wolf. The Figs eaten by the couples during the festival represented, and still does today, the fertility of the woman. The Milk was used by the couples to wipe the blood clean from the forehead of the male, and represented new life. Today Valentine's day is more widely celebrated, though there is some correlation between the two: •The color Red, represents the blood of the ritual sacrifice •The color white, for the milk used.
