Considering the differences between Julien and Azune, the party's Working Dogs.
Julien is a herding dog. He's bred for it and trained for it. Think Border Collie or Belgian Malinois. Not smart in a "can figure out a puzzle" way but not just highly trainable but REQUIRES training. An untrained or underutilized herding dog is a grumpy trouble-causing miserable thing.
They also NEED a Human. They get anxious without their human around to provide clear directions and goals. All they want is to get directions, fulfil directions, make human happy.
Those instincts can't be put down, they will try to guide small children or other animals, pace circles, become territory aggressive or aggressive with people/animal's interacting with their person.
But with directions, with a goal, with a person, with plenty of exercise both phycisal and mental, with something to guide and direct.... Happy content dog.
Azune is a Livestock Guardian Dog. Great Pyre or such.
He's not necessarily looking to herd or do tricks. He knows his purpose already and how to do it.
LSG dogs need territory and things to protect, and they do it very well. They don't tend to get as attached to an individual person, although they will happily accept people in their pact. Extremely gentle with smaller creatures, fantastic with children.
They're pretty low maintenance, self-motivated, just let them do their thing, patrol their territory, check on with everything. They're pretty fluffy and adorable looking.
They're also exceptionally deadly if a predator comes too close, and their thick fur makes it hard for many other animals to land a solid bite on them. And they have exceptional memories, if for whatever reason they fail to dispatch a threat, they will remember scents and sights and sounds and be all that much more alert if it returns.
They also are great for herd dynamics, they can be placed with anxious animals to help them be more calm and reduce injuries and maladaptive behaviors.
Interestingly that includes helping their more anxious cousins the herding dogs. They need different things but they both need to be USEFUL. And the differences mean under the right circumstances they can work well together.
